The Home Office is limiting the number of asylum seekers Britain is taking from France under the countries’ “one in, one out” scheme due to concerns over the criminal risk posed by migrants, The Times can reveal.
The development has stalled progress in sending small boat migrants to France because the terms of the removals deal require the UK to accept the same number of asylum seekers in return.
Official figures disclosed to The Times showed the UK accepted 896 asylum seekers from France and removed 921 migrants. The latter figure represents just 3.7 per cent of those to have arrived on small boats since the one in, one out deal, known as the Hillmore treaty, came into effect on August 6 last year.
A Home Office source said: “Numbers are being limited because there’s a serious concern about the profile of people coming in on the route.
“They’re mainly young men more likely to engage in criminal activity so we don’t want to take many more. It’s stalled progress on the deal.”

Sounds as if the French have been playing fast and loose again. The theory and expectation did not match reality.
The people going through property channels were people with skills moreso that random boat people coming illegally. A reasonable assumption.
