Why can't people just book a pub that serves draft IPA and plays a bit of Status Quo.

There is a picture on the website with some kant and cocktail maracas....

One of my friends is a contractor and discovered last year that he can hold a christmas party for all of his employees (so just him) and they can each bring a guest (that was me) and he can expense back the tax up to the value of 150 quid per person or some such financial wizardry which was over my head. Him being the only person of course, he took me as a 'guest' and we went to a fancy restaurant, ate and drank a lot and paid a lot less than we would normally have to. Worked out nicely.

This year will be my first Christmas living in Barcelona, working with a bunch of software developers. We are going to some tapas restaurant, I imagine it'll be quite dry given the people I work with.

This year we have a Tuesday lunch planned at a hotel with a "who killed Santa" murder mystery them. I can hardly contain my excitement.

The new team I am now in at work had a team meeting and a secret "team-building" event was arranged. I get claustrophobia so imagine my delight when the event turned out to be an escape room thing. To make matters worst, it was in a genuine prison (now turned into a hotel). The five of us were marched, blindfolded, into a small cell, then padlocked to each other and to the wall.

As I was new to the team, I didn't want to complain, so I went along with it. I managed to force myself to make a decent contribution to our "escape" and they did at least take the blindfolds off. Never again, though.

A nice pizza in convivial surroundings: what's wrong with that for work socials?

Enjoy! Los Caracoles is a great place to eat, by the way.

Slightly off topic,Whenever I’m in the montague Pyke on the charring cross road I marvel at the memorabilia on the wall stating it was the Marquee club, so what’s the score there?

It was Marquee 2 closed in 1995/6.

I used to know one of the barmaids (6ft 3" Danish girl called Anne) So I used to get in for free.

Great club.

We don’t have a Christmas Party anymore; it’s called a ‘holiday lunch’ so as not to offend anyone.
Which leads me to conclude that, with so many snowflakes around, it’s bound to be a white Christmas.

I'm self-employed, so this year I shall be drinking meths in a ditch.

Starting to look a good deal considering some of the alternatives up-thread, especially RFromAfar's lot.

I didn't know the Pyle used to be the Marquee!!!
I played there in the early 90s- we thought we were on the up. Turns out we weren't. Now that I work in Soho we use the back bar of the Pyle for a quick Friday night pint after work. Have to say that the area around Wardour St is a real eye opener! Great buzz in the area though.

One Marquee, three venues. Originated on Oxford St, moved to Wardour St, then on to the Charing Cross Rd. I was a Wardour St regular, from 1976 to the early 80's, though attended occasionally after that. Sometimes we went especially for the band(s), sometimes we went just to enjoy drinking rather dubious beer out of plastic glasses. I loved the dump, loved the West End as well, always will.

We're off to a fancy-ish restaurant in Shoreditch and then have a few tables booked at a bar. Party orders are already being made and it will be started off as always with a Daily Mail Secret Santa (meaning that every present has to either offend or scare the recipient) and a special quiz that will be accompanied by a festive cocktail our boss whips up - equivalent to when you used to make 'punch' with all the cheap bottles of booze you could find, plus some orange juice.

We all go out and socialise together anyway as it's a good office and there's loads of young people that aren't w@nkers, so it's always a good night and there's always stories to tell. Luckily it's on a Friday this year so I expect to be just about OK enough to open one eye and watch the Leeds away game on the stream.

I accept that I am probably a curmudgeonly old git, but I absolutely detest Secret Santa.

At best it's an unwelcome nuisance and at worst a load of Infantile bollocks that results in all the 'presents' being thrown away at the end of the night.

I am very keen on preserving traditions - every cheese in our house has been rolled down at least one hill - and recoil in horror at new-fangled customs, especially those which reek of commercialism. Stuff like "Black Friday," Secret Santa and - gag - Christmas Jumper Day has me hissing like a cornered alley cat. Well what do you expect of a tree hugger?

Anyway, my company is having a Christmas Jumper Day and I have grudgingly decided to participate because the staff in my office are a good bunch (the escape room thing was organised by the Scandinavians at the mother ship).

I was muttering dark words about the jumper thing to my wife, finding the idea of splashing out on a ridiculous item of clothing, which will be worn once a year, for an event that I think is daft, utterly preposterous when she suggested that I buy the five quid second hand one she had just seen in a charity shop. Skinflint that I am, I was well up for that - it's also a form of recycling - so I tried the thing on. It was drum tight and I could hardly move my arms so...I bought it anyway. If I am going to look ridiculous, I might as well blow the doors off.

Unfortunately, I didn't allow for the fact that our very promising looking company Christmas meal falls on the same day as the Christmas jumper extravaganza, so I may struggle to breathe once I have ploughed through all the festive treats, but hey-ho.

Whilst not strictly a jumper this one will make you the cool kid at the party that will surely win the heart of Donna from Accounts.

Most of the time it's a load of shite to buy a mug or other tat for the sake of it, but when done properly, it's superb. Every year our one is what most people look forward to the most and for the new people, it's a proper showcase of what we're all about.
