For me, you need that dark strong stuff this time of year. So it's
English
* McEwan's Champion Ale - a bit carbonated for my taste, but if left for a bit will settle. Nice strong malt with bitter chocolate aftertaste. The best you can get in the supermarkets for my money. This is Terry Fenwick - strong & savvy.
* Hog's Back OTT - you'll need a specialist seller for this, but quite a few in/around town. Really good brew with strong nose, smooth taste and long malty finish. Best thing in a bottle in UK for me. This one is Gerry Francis - versatile, bossy, oozing class
Belgian
* Agree Rochefort 8. The Trappists knew/know what they're doing and this is a great brew, great on the first taste and gets better. Then build up to the Rochefort 10. Dark Belgian chocolate nose, lovely on the the front tastebuds, great long, satisfying finish that will have you wanting another. These are Dave Thomas meets Taarabt meets Eze - silky, classy, sheer joy, improving with every touch.
* Kasteelbier Donkel - Quite the best thing in a glass I've ever had. Not cheap but worth every penny. No gass at all, beautiful head, perfect malt with touch of vanilla with delicate dark chocolate icecream aftertaste and great length This is Stan the Great - never ceasing to amaze; beautiful. |

I'm at the Dojo of the chigwell mother in laws all day xmas and boxing day, along with Jo's Extended family.
To be Quite frank, i'd rather jump on the Event Horizon to breech the parameters of the scientific unknown that dwell within the tesseract of the Mice galaxies, than spend 48 hours on the sofa nodding politely while dribbling like max clifford on castratus inhibitors across the north face of the Bronze turkey at the mother in law, but what can you do?.
Thus, I've gott a mini keg, (8 pints) of Samuel Adanms Jack Brand Dry Hopped Lager for xmas day to blunt the five known senses.
Boxing day; A meat rack mix of Frontier fullers Lager , Four pure BaseCamp pilsner, Mad Squirrel Pilsner, Innis and Gunn To get me off my fackin' skate, while having to listen to my Brother in law groaning into the heavenly firmament about Frank Lampard senior falling over at ellend road to head the winner in the fa cup semi final 1980.

Grimbergen is a great shout. All varietys of it are tasty.
I recommended this to the ale buffs at my office and they loved it.
Beerwulf sell it the cheapest I've found.

went to Amsterdam for my 40th a good few years ago and ended up on the first evening at a small bar selling many beers of different strengths. They had about 20 beers on a chalk board listed in order of their strength... Bottom of the board was a strawberry beer which pitched in at about 6.5%... Top of the board was Rochefort 10 (at an eye watering 12%).
My mate said "by the end of the weekend I will have had 1 of each beer starting at the top". I said "great sounds good but I'm starting at the bottom"... We all had 3-4 beers in that bar and then had a Chinese meal... The following day said mate was totally wrecked and actually spent the rest of the weekend in his hotel room... lessons were learnt that evening :). btw - the lovely barmaid also explained to us that the Rochefort beers varied from batch to batch at that time... she said the Rochefort 10 strength could be anything between 11% and 14% ... they are all beautiful beers but certainly not session ales! |  | | |

I make an annual trip to a small farm shop on the French/Belgian border to stock up on Belgian and the this lovely Dutch beer. At 1.75 euros per bottle it's insanely good.
Start dosing with the La Trappe Quadrupel, and reduce accordingly with the Triple or Dubbel - delicious beers, but must be served at the correct temperature to fully appreciate.
If you wish to bypass Christmas altogether then you can go Liquid ketamin mode. Smash a few of the Quads Christmas eve and regulate dosage and you'll be in the hole until gone New Year. |  | | |

I gave up alcohol 18 months ago but still enjoy and appreciate the advancement of 0% (or 0.5%) beers that are now on the market. For you lagerites, San Miguel have had an excellent 0% beer on the shelves for years, Heineken is actually better than their standard fair. But for proper beer drinkers, Old Speckled Hen, Shipyard IPA, St Peter's Without and Adnams Ghost Ship are very good indeed. Brewdog with their Punk IPA and Nanny State are very decent on a warm sunny day and look out for a brewery called Big Drop. A good range of beers including an outstanding stout which I would challenge anyone to taste the difference between that and Fullers London Porter. Its just a shame that for the majority of pubs still that they continue to play lip service to such beers, for example the Crown just stocks Nanny State, but charges the same for normal beers, and loads of pubs stock Becks Blue, which quite frankly makes the original Calibre taste decent. Its great to have a few beers now knowing that to be over the limit I would probably drown first. |  |
