Music QPR have run out to 12:38 - Apr 2 with 5711 viewsjoeheadland

Good evening everyone,

I hope this okay to post here, moderators please move or delete if you need to.

I’m part of a team at the University of Sheffield, led by Dr Chris
Stride. We've published a number of academic papers and magazine
articles relating to football history, on subjects such as statues and
replica shirts (see, for example sportingstatues.com, and
https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17460263.2019.1578255).

Our current project is investigating the music that football teams have
run or walked out of the tunnel to over the years.

We are looking for the music that QPR have run out to, for as
many seasons in the past as you can recall. We are simply interested in
the title of the song, the artist who recorded it, and for which seasons
QPR ran out to this. Any help you can give us to
piece together the different songs that your club has run out to would
be hugely appreciated.

If you have any personal anecdotes around the reasons for the songs
being used, or the changes between them, that would also be fantastic.

I should also add that we are not interested in goal music, or a song
that is played at the final whistle, but just the song that is on the
tannoy system as the players enter the field.

If you think someone else may be able to help, or you have any
questions, please let us know! We would be very happy to discuss the
project.

Cheers

Joe Headland

We definitely had "Hi Ho Silver Lining" for awhile. Was it just a myth that we had the theme from "Steptoe and Son?" I should be able to remember but really can't.

Play the game boys
Play the game
Win can win if you begin to play the game
Let’s unite and do it right and play the game

That was played for a while in the mid 80s. An anti hooligan song sung by a bunch of coppers.

Haha I totally forgot about that one. What a racket that was.

For me, that was Rangers’ contribution to monotonous football songs!

Didn't say I liked it, thank gawd it disappeared quickly.

Poll: Thank God The Seaons Over.

Back in the '60's / '70's we came out to this jolly ditty.

Written by season ticket holder Steve Race. More famous for his Bird's Eye Peas jingle which starred a young Patsy Kensit.

I loved that. It would do the job today, if the club survives this crisis.

I seem to remember that for a couple of seasons 97-99 we were walking out to Tub Thumpin by Chumbawba which was pretty terrible but might be wrong

Was going to post the same

It definitely happened.

Pretty sure ex Liverpool captain Emlyn Hughes was part of that.

When I started going in early-mid 90's it was Simply the Best by Tina Turner.

Not sure when they stopped that (maybe around the time we were relegated from Prem)

By 99/2000 it was Pigbag and has been ever since.

Would love them to change it up a bit now

Yes that replaced Tina Turner's Simply The Best which we used 92-95 ish. Never been as good since we stopped.

When we got beaten 5-0 at Wimbledon 00/01 they played the Steptoe theme as we traipsed out for the second half.

I was off my fu cking skate for most of '91/'92 but i seem to recall 'Fanfare for the common man'b y Prog rock collective Emerson Lake and Palmer, as our run out tune under Chairman Richard Thompson.

Interesting, thanks for posting. If I had been following Rangers back then - I didn't support a team until about 2000 - I would probably have cried like a total wus because that is one of my all time favourite tunes. Like you and most people, it's the ELP version I am familiar with but it was actually by Aaron Copland.

There's no way Copland could have carried off wearing a sheepskin lined bomber jacket in a freezing cold, empty enormodome, though. Keith Emerson was briefly the coolest man on the planet when that video was released

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

Thank you for commenting and sharing your memories. It's much appreciated and is invaluable to the project.

I am of a generation which sadly never got to hear the Manchester Police Choir singing football songs. Is anyone able to find a link/title for the anti-hooligan track?

We're still on the lookout for songs, so if anyone remembers anymore, or can confirm other suggestions, drop us a line.

If you remember roughly what season even better!
Cheers,
