Fan sites meeting with Christian Nourry 17:13 - May 15 with 46217 viewsNorthernr

There was an end of season debrief with the CEO at Loftus Road last night which I attended. We've whacked the audio on the Patreon, no pay wall on this so you should all be able to listen whether you've got a sub or not - please let me know if that's not the case.

I'll perhaps type the minutes up physically over the weekend if I've got enough in the tank...

You, of all people, should know not to get overly affected by the fluff and nonsense of social media. This site is strong, vibrant and popular. Be proud of your work.

I really appreciate that mate.

Silly thing is it was me who said to Paul Morrissey in the first place that the group was a bit ‘pale, male, stale’ and it would be good to get younger voices in there. I think it’s right people with big social media followings are involved. Same as we pressed Lee Hoos to always have a general sale of away tickets because loads of youngsters who are going home and away were getting shut out of games like Reading, Luton, Fulham etc.

I’m not the hostile force they seem to believe on Twitter etc. it’s tough to read. (And yeh, I know, don’t read it. Easier said than done, particularly when you’ve got an internal monologue like mine)

I hate this website wars stuff. Hate it. Think Ted said it as well, these ‘,”culture wars” around our club atm are so depressing. We’ve been through it once before at this club and I’ll be gutted if we’re about to go through it again. I don’t know what the answer is but I am v open to suggestions.

Just seen this post.

I wanted to say something similar but was struggling to find the words without sounding sycophantic.

I completely agree with this.

Social media is social media.

LFW is proper journalism supported by a vibrant on-line community.

Winning is the answer. Not something we can do much about ourselves, unfortunately.

But that period between 2004 to 2010 was unbelievably vitriolic, divided and dramatic, wasn't it? Everyone saw how mental it was under Briatore in the Four Year Plan, but the bit before he turned up was even madder, with all of Paladini's little elves.

Then Warnock landed 2010, we had the time of our lives, everyone's waving flags, dancing in the street together. No harm done. Like the previous decade hadn't happened.

Just an incredibly bitchy, uptight club that needs to win. Probably like most clubs, but maybe a little more bitchy.

Keep on keeping on. All things will pass.

Matt's late father, Harold was a vocal supporter for years.
In fact, it was the Wintons who subsidised wages and transfers back when QPR were in administration;
https://www.theguardian.com/fo
This probably gives him a bit more right to be in the room in my opinion, even if we do not 100% agree with what he's saying.

I get the point below, he wasn't representing any fan sites per se though, which probably lowered his credibility somewhat, but being honest I don't know who most of the others are either!

I've read AKUTR's since I was a kid and I like Connors YT channel.

I think if the club needed a balanced voice in the room I've always thought Jim Frayling speaks well, but what do I know!

To me, that sounds absolutely fair enough that he is invited also then. Not sure why the invite is contentious for some.

i think perhaps many are aggrieved that there isnt the opportunity as there was under Hoos and Ferdinand to question them and the current manager and occasional player and for whatever the reason this isnt on the agenda under the current regime for a hundred or so fans like previous.

For me, i can understand why those that those that normally woulld try to go to such events and miss them.

i mean they did recently have four of the 75-76 team for a 50 year anniversary event but for whatever reasons they dont wish to have a full on fans forum.

Such is life....

Do you honestly think for one second nourry is aware of the winton families history with the club and from being on the QPR 1sr commit re with Harold many many years ago Harold would be asking way worse question than anyone on this message board , why was Matt invited no idea atall the Matt winton of the past would be jointing his dad in calling things out , not sure who the latest version is thats for sure , I’ve been at the end of some of his messages on Twitter and seem some of the stuff he said about other fans , no idea why this about change has happened but dare question the greatness of nourry and his wrath is never ending a.

The old Matt slammed on my coaches window to Cardiff trying to Tracy nick Blackburn’s attention while we was stuck in traffic . So yes I enough idea why he would be invited to a group meeting. Such as this .

I reread my first post this morning Clive in response to the Nourry meeting and can see though i still stand by my belief that there does seem ti be in general tone on here very anti Nourry feel to this forum currently, i was completely out of order for saying a lot if it was influenced by your good self. It is not and do appreciate you think also that there is also a lot to like about this new regime also.

i didnt have the greatest of nights last night myself yesterday so unfortunately have a habit of not totally checking all the nonsense i sometimes blurt out without keeping a check on how i say things, dont edit and sometimes dont think of the impact it could have.

i know i write too much often.

Tone is sometimes easily misinterpreted in the written words also. Lot easier when everyone communicated always by phone. Those days are gone sadly.

I havent read any of the posts on twitter but if they are personally insulting you thats incredibly wrong and not correct in anyways. That is not nice at all. And no need.

But myself also wanted to say i do very much appreciate this forum. i can post on here way too much but its a great outlet on here for many. Not sure my partner agrees sometimes but at least it prevents me having to pay attention to the latest epusode of Eastenders !!!!!!

You do work extremely hard to keep it all going and all the reports on here and othwr output you put on here is brilliant and appreciate its not your day job as well.

I know you dont promote the patreon and tne monthly payments towards the running on here and AKUTRS too and i know they only token amounts and its up to individuals if they want to conribute a few pennies but anyone that doesnt and they regulars on here and may not even be aware, hope you get a few more signing up also.

You definitely deserve that.
But yes apologies for the way my words were written initially. They were wrong.

As another poster said you should be very proud of your work on here. i have never participated on any other online forum or otherwise but have read others just to see what they about and this is by far the most vibrant and with the most posters by far. We wont always agree and thats all good too.

i am thankful loftforwords is here Clive and am sure that goes for everyone here too.

You do a great job.

Mate don’t worry about it, you’re entitled to your view whatever it is, sparked a decent discussion and gave me a chance to defend myself a bit because there’s plenty of people out there who agree with you as I’ve sadly found out this week!

I would hope that there is someone left at the club who would have briefed Nourry about who all these people are, in the same way that new players are told not to mention Chelsea too much etc...

I don't know Matt at all, I'm aware from stories that Harold was a loud and often critical voice. I think Matt is in his 50's so maybe his personality has changed?

I know that my opinions on a lot of things have changed over time, I think this is pretty natural?

I think the issue is more that there are two types of meeting.
The more traditional "open" forum which is the Fans forum.
And then this one, which was representatives of the fans (owners of websites, social media channels and producers of fanzines), in a smaller environment.

I'd say he's in his 40s and based on his Twitter handle he's definitely more pro Nourry/current owners.

For example: https://medium.com/@matt.winto

But he doesn't represent a fan group so I'm not really sure why he got an invite to attend this...

i read it a while back one line does stick out though,

in ref to marti leavin the club

This wasn’t luck. It was a strategic call made by people who actually understand what’s going on inside the club.

Seems a weird thing to say when he was allegedly let go for allegedly speaking to another club. so did he or didnt he ?

The idea that Matt Winton deserved to be invited to an event like this - one explicitly aimed at websites/forums/social media/etc - simply because his dad put money into the club 25 years ago is bonkers. You're just trying to find ways to justify it to suit your wider views of the current situation.

Is it the end of the world that he was invited along? Of course not. It does, however, raise eyebrows.

On the Culture war stuff it does feel similar to those years 2005-2010 with fans split but the big difference to me looks like in those years it was a clear deliberate plan from people at the club to do that, I'm not convinced this time it's coming from people at the club it feels more like a different generations of fans at war thing this time which you get with every subject these days from politics to the final episode of Stranger Things, people go bat shit crazy over anything now.

It's easier said than done to just say ignore the bad stuff but when you create something as successful as this site has been you will get people who want to bring you down. You only have to look at the reaction to Luke Littler to see one person's hero is another person's nemesis.

I'm similar to you in letting the bad stuff get me down and I've never had anything like the stuff you've had to face so wouldn't for a second compare it but time away helps. Even a week away from QPR you realise how silly a lot of this stuff is and with social media some people are just desperate for a reaction to justify their existence.

I don't always agree with your views on QPR and I'm sure you are the same with me but the thing that keeps me coming back is that I know what you write or what you say comes from the heart with no hidden agendas it's just what you believe in at that time and the beauty of life is that opinions can change. You might think a signing like Clint Hill is dreadful in May but he turns out to be your favourite player. It's Ok to be wrong. I hated the final episode of Lost when it came out, watched it again last year and thought it was alright. Opinions can change with time when you have more information but for many people they will just stick to one thing even when they know they are wrong.

There are so many podcast and football writers today who will change their opinion depending on what will make them more popular and the really easy thing to do is just say everything is great and back whoever is in charge then repeat with the next but that's not you and is something you should be proud of. If something is not right say it, if it's going well then praise it. That's what you've always done so don't let them grind you down.

It is a bit weird. Back in the day you'd have a favourite player; now the youngsters seem to worship a DoF because he 'cooks'. One can imagine them opening their Panini packs hoping they get swaps of Nourry to stick on their bedroom wall.

I find it very sad that if people are invited to an event aimed at engagement are then vilified for asking straightforward questions. Whether this is via some form of direction or spontaneous coincidence it is unpleasant and unwarranted.

Anyone who takes the time to read the content of this site and the superb quality of writing by the LfW team can see that there is a love for QPR and a desire to see it flourish. It may be that there is a particular demographic that finds it more to their taste but I would hope that there really is something for everyone here.

My main frustration is what seems to be a focus on building a narrative and 'controlling the message' rather than a focus on delivery. using success and tangible progress to create something real upon which to build a powerful story. If the purpose of engagement is to build bridges, get people unified behind the leadership at the club then it has been a failure in this instance and sadly a bit of trend. From the outside it looks like a box ticking exercise that the club do under sufference rather than a serious exercise to listen, communicate and explain.

I am sure that sometimes the questions are tedious, there will always be an element of that in this kind of event but there will also be genuine and well thought out positions that either may not have been considered by decision makers or they based a decision on inaccurate or inaccurate data.

The reality is we have made little tangible progress in terms of league position, consistency in performance, development of high value talent or renovation of the stadium. We still have a high turnover of managers/coaches or whatever and for all the talk I do not see a clear strategy. It seems in recent years we have a mini performance crisis and either at the end of a transfer window or in the next available window we acquire players that are contrary to the stated approach. That has happened under Warburton, Ainsworth, Cifuentes and to a degree under the current incumbant.
I would agree that the proportion of inbound players that seem good prospects has improved on previous years and the Training Ground (which precedes the current CEO and his team) is excellent. But fundamentally we are in the same place, getting roughly the same level of performance that we have achieved for a few years now. Maybe football is less complicated than it is sometimes dressed up to be?

For me, either have fan/fan group engagement if you really want to hear voices that may take a contrary or challenging view and see that as a benefit or do not bother. If you are not doing it for the right reasons then you cause more harm than goood. You disunite instead of bringing people together, you seed distrust so that even when you do something good it generates suspicion. There will be genuine reasons for any organisation not to disclose some information but that apart open, timely and honest engagement will bring you far better medium and long term benefit and credibility.

A wise man once warned against urinating down someones back and telling them it is raining. It does not end well.

Clive and his team are the good guys here and the club would do well to see that and understand where he is coming from.

I wasn't personally trying to justify it, just saying how I thought he might have got a cheek on a seat in the room.

I don't agree with everything Matt says, far from it, but its nice to hear a different opinion every now and then, otherwise its just Finney telling us that QPR is a special club with special fans all the time.

Which, do disrespect to Paul, but every supporter thinks their club is special and the rest of the fans are as well, even the racists at Chelsea think their shed is special...

Its the same way that I don't like it if the BBC invite some gammon from Reform onto Question Time, but if you want to hear from Mick Lynch, then you'll probably get a Farage for balance.

Bravo, sir.

In addition to this, I also think it would be very easy for the CEO to build bridges and actually tackle some of the social media abuse Clive and the like get. This is a guy who’s first business he set up was a social media advisory firm focused on 16-24 yr olds. If anyone knows how to influence that demographic, it’s him.

What is your stop him coming out publicly and saying:

“To put the record straight, LFW is a great fan website with decades of brilliant writing, and a passion for QPR. We all want the best for QPR. The questions Clive asked at the recent meeting with fan sites were perfectly valid. My tone was a reflection of my frustration at not having the numbers to hand not the question being asked. It is important fans hold the club to account. We are all in this together and we all want the best for QPR. We welcome challenge and will continue to do our best to engage fans and demonstrate the steps we’re taking to improve the club. But I implore all our fans not to abuse other fans who have given so much to the QPR community over many years, especially when they are asking valid questions.”

What downside is there for Christian Nourry in publishing such a message?

The club are not controlling social media abuse and the stick Clive gets. But they could easily try to put a stop to it.

They weren't willing to put out a statement about one of their own employees, Steve Bould.
When he was/is getting stick for "having Saturdays off"
Due to the lack of information the club now puts out.

I really doubt they are going out of their way for Clive, although like you say it wouldn't do them any harm to.

Brilliant post

THIS - absolutely. We are so lucky. They/he follow the team everywhere and always ask the questions that actually really matter. It doesn't take a genius to work out that ticketing process/pricing for our younger demographic of supporters is of massive importance.

What on earth gives you anti-Nourry vibes?
