I thought there was an insight into how they got the cash, thought that was clear when he lost his job and went to work in the small brokers how they made there money on selling penny shares. All in all it's a good film, but fck me it's long. |  | | |

Really enjoyed it, but agree that it was shallow in explaining exactly what they were up to. Another film is "Boiler Room" about the same guy. It's much better on explaining the scam they were running. Recommend that as well.

Went and saw'' 12 Years A Slave'' at Westfield Vue at end of last week. Brilliant film although the audience were very quiet at the end and left the cinema in silence - such was the effect. Close call on the Oscars - and we know that the voting can be political.
Will have to be another film's absolutely outstanding performance to prevent Michael Fassbender winning ''Best Supporting Actor'' Oscar - his brutal character was just brilliant - scary. |  | | |

The point of the film isn't to make the character likeable. And nor did it.
It showed how they got away with things and how the US financial system has loop holes which are still exploited to this day. Should the personalities and addictions really well I thought.
It's also a comedy and made me laugh.

That's what makes the Oscars so interesting, comparing films which are so different. The look and feel of WoWS is very Scorsese but is that what is judged? Gravity was unique in how it presented space and a completely different cinematic experience. Similarly, 12 Years a Slave is a compelling story with interesting characterisation ; American Hustle has a more complex plot and works as an ensemble piece which the other films don't, to the same extent, have.
It's a good Oscar year tbh and it shows that Hollywood are trying to up their game in an attempt to attract audiences back into cinemas. | |

It didn't make them likeable as such but personally I thought it sailed perhaps too close to the wind in revelling in their charisma and excess. In some ways I guess that queasy hypocrisy does accurately reflect our own complicity though - the final shot with the crowd from all walks of life trying to learn sales tips etc, or the way Belfort was initially himself an underdog among the fatcats. Scorsese tries to have his cake and eat it the same way we do.
Reminded me a fair bit of the film Pain and Gain also from last year. Lot, lot stupider but similar themes really. |  | | |

12 years a Slave is excellent, no film has had that effect on me since Shindler's list.
I didn't really see what the fuss is all about with Gravity, then again I didn't like Apollo 13 either so maybe space stuff isn't my thing.
Looking forward to WoWS, fully expecting to hate the characters but it's a Scorcese film, aside from Casino i've loved his movies. |  | | |

Liked WOWS, the girlfriend enjoyed it too. Didn't feel like 3hrs at all, allthough I thought Jonah hill was the jar jar binks of the film.
12 years was also enjoyable, watched a DVD screener last week. without spoiling it I thought the ending was rushed. |  | | |

Two little niggles not so much with the film itself, but with the false impression the film might leave:
1) That slavery was a purely Southern institution, when it was used in the development of Northern cities such as New York.
2) That slavery was simply a product of individual cruelty, which wouldn't explain why 'enlightened' men such Thomas Jefferson the author of the lines: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness' were slaveholders. |  |

When was the film set? New York banned slavery on any child born after 1799, and all existing slaves would be freed after 28 years, meaning slavery ended in New York in 1827, albeit that slaves taken as chattels to New York from slave states were not automatically free. New York merchants profited from Southern trade as financiers and shippers, and as such were generally hostile to the Civil War, but then so were British merchants. It's asking a bit much getting all that into a film.
I haven't seen the film so I can't say if it presents the second assumption. I thought it was pretty obvious that slavery thrived and survived due to greed rather than sadism. The inability of people to see that the rights they proclaimed should apply to everyone looks baffling to us now, though some states (eg Massachusetts) decreed slavery unconstitutional on those grounds. It took another 50-60 years to extend those rights to the other half of the human race, and the Americans were hardly slower than others. | | | |
