New version for new season as Sheff Wed enter transfer embargo...
Old thread here...
Rest of the Championship thread by Hunterhoop10 Aug 2024 11:07 Toyed with this idea last season. Shall we have a thread to discuss, comment on, cover the rest of the league? A place to discuss other teams’ results, performances, financial implosions, etc?
For example, last night, anyone catch either of the first two games? I didn’t. But somewhat surprised/worried Blackburn scored 4 given how they are meant to struggle. Was it Derby being utter sh*te?
Sounds like Preston are continuing in the same vein of being incredibly dull.
Clive, what do you think? Worth making a sticky? Might reduce the number of threads to manage.

Who knew that Will Still had a brother?
His record is awful. He was sacked from his last job after a couple of months. 2 points won from a possible 24. I know Watford’s owners are bonkers but they may have exceeded themselves this time.

Not a particularly original point because Wilkins makes it a lot but that first half there from Middlesbrough is what a Championship central midfield is supposed to look like in a tough away game. Hackney is going to make them a fortune.

Brilliant watch. Both teams playing high quality football but Hackney has been imperious.

Assuming they go up I think he’ll stay for a year. Always looks a level above in this league even against decent sides. Excited to see him have it coached out of him while picking up four England caps and £170k a week somewhere. Good luck to him.

I didn’t realise Ipswich can nestle in two points behind IF they win their game in hand. Some run Ipswich are on…….. remind me who kickstarted their season again?????
Really wrankles me to see the teams sitting 4th to 8th and where we could’ve been. Don’t have a lunatic defender or shit the bed against Wrexham and beat a poor Charlton team and we’d be on the rails making headway When you’re 6th and winning I find players tend to recover from injuries a bit quicker and such like.
Oh well……
Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

And don’t forget the bore fest at Oxford as well. Does make u wonder sometimes if the club actually wants promotion in fear of those at the top being fully found out whe. Trying to buy players to make us competitive in the Orem
Maybe we’re mildly better than crap and it’s the Leicester/Cov performances that are the exception rather than 0-0xfords, pitiful first halves at Pompey and Charlton etc.
Maybe all the teams doing their best to not finish sixth are similarly crap.

That three man combo in the middle for Boro tonight is the difference between 1-6 and 8-12 in this league. Madsen is potentially our first part of that, but we’ve got so much else to do around him in the centre of the park. Browne, Hackney, Morris. They put a stat up after an hour on who’d touched the ball most on either team and it was those three and McGree.

Hackney may be the star but getting Alan Browne on loan from Sunderland was a masterstroke in itself, such a quality player, he was always pulling the strings when we played Preston. I'm hoping over the next few weeks Stephan gives Morgan more of a chance, there's a player in there and whilst we have injuries a three man midfield is not the worst idea.

Yes but then both Malanda and Ayling were playing incisive passes from the back to start the attacks or driving forward with the ball. That creates the space for those midfielders in front. Edwards or JCS could do that for us. I would bring Edwards into the middle for Saturday and keep him there until end of the season. At the same time, they should speak to Cook about a new contract. But back to the point, whilst Cook and Dunne have been our best players we will not learn anything if we continue with them and not playing Edwards there.

dont see how u can drop cook at them moment , yes hes out of contract in a few months but the centre of defence is the most solid its been for years . we are still hanging on the the feint hope of 6th spot so until thats over id keep it as it is ,
be nice to see some of our fav players in the attacking areas soon though

It would be very tough on him but we also need to look forward. We didn’t sign Edwards to play right back. I would like to see what Edwards could do with Madsen and Vale (hopefully Chair) in front of him. It would be a bold call from Stephan. I can’t see him doing it. But for me we are at our best offensively when we have that ball playing centre half.

have to agree we do look a diff side when edwards brings the ball out , ive even seen clark slater do it a couple of times in the past , issue is we seem to have reverted back to passing the ball along the back four again, not sure if thats down to dunne and cook being in the middle or its just a tactical thing . i think it will stay the same until its looking less likley we take our chance for 6th place .

Think you’re right. Looking at fixtures after Blackburn, being out of the playoffs will come very soon!

I agree that would be a very bold move from Stephan. I’d quite like to see Mbengue back at RB and Edwards in for Cook on Saturday. I know Cook has absolutely bolstered our defence but it does weaken our attack because he can’t really carry the ball out. Losing Amadou hasn’t really impacted our defence but it does weaken our attacking strength as without him and Burrell we’re woefully short of pace. Also while he does a job I don’t think RE is a natural RB.
Of course if we lose that the same people who are complaining about him not being bold enough would complain about him breaking up the solid defence that he’s actually achieved recently. Hence it would be a risk. But at home against a lower level team I think it’d be worth taking the chance. Apart from anything else Cook has played a lot of games recently and probably could do with a rest in any case. We really don’t want to lose him too to injury, we really would be down to bare bones, especially as AM is likely to trigger his two-match suspension soon.

Mbengue , Dunne, Edwards should be 3 of the starting back 4 next season. Better to try them now rather than next season. But Cook should be rewarded with new contract…..reduced a bit but he deserves a new deal.

I agree Northern. I agree.
And it's been so long since we've ever even attempted to have that magic mix combined in midfield. It's why I always feel 442 can only ever go so far, even at this level.
Scowen / Luongo / Freeman was a budget attempt, and at times, came close. In the hands of better tactical and possession based manager than Ollie it might have really clicked, even if Scowen was limited.
But now I'd really like to see Hayden / Morgan / Madsen all play together. I think that's got a nice mix of bite, legs and quality.
