(I also think it'd be a great way to support 1st Class cricket in the host country.) On the England batting: I really feel Root has a point to prove in Oz and, given his form over the last year or two, this could be his time - which could be decisive.

A few people on FB were saying that warmup matches are a waste of time because Australia A won’t want to bust a gut to help England prepare properly, and our bowlers won’t want to get injured playing against them either. I would say that every Aussie would love to play against an England test team and see what they could do against them.Maybe our bowlers are too fragile to play too many warm up games though.
| Ashes thread on 15:18 - Nov 14 with 2837 views | johann28 | So, it's looking like the first 9 pick themselves (I don't rate Crawley, but there it is) then presumably two out of Wood, Carse, Bashir and Tongue. Assuming Wood isn't fit, for me it's Carse and Bashir. I think they'll give us a damn good thrashing, but here's hoping. | | | |

| Ashes thread on 20:09 - Oct 9 by Malintabuk | Don't think we can expect Archer or Woods doing a 5 match series More likely it will be a 3-2 split most likely in Archers favour. Spinner is the issue for me.. think it will be Bashir... wouldn't it be nice if Adil decided on one last hurrah We may even just go with Bethell / Root combo sincerely hope not, though I can see Bethell preferred over Pope, if Pope fails in the first 2 tests Brooks, Duckett, Root, and even Smith could be the key, we certainly seem to have the edge batting Stokes though is the key for me. Can he do all 5 tests ? ..... if he doesn't then it will really make it difficult to win |
"Spinner is the issue for me.. think it will be Bashir... wouldn't it be nice if Adil decided on one last hurrah" Agreed re Adil. The leg spin department is one in which England's recent record is terrible. The last England leggie before Rashid to get over 50 test wickets played his last test in....1951! We haven't always been so poor in this area of the game though: Between 1901 and 1951 - an era with world wars (obs.) and fewer tests - five England leg spinners took 330 wickets between them, three of those players a lot more economically than Adil.

| Ashes thread on 16:57 - Nov 16 with 1946 views | Superhoops2808 | Start my nights on Thursday for 7 nights - With Hazlewood and Cummins out, this is seriously our best chance to win the 1st test. We are notoriously slow at starting series and we have to buck the trend. I am worried that we are considering going in with an all pace attack too. If we dont think Bashir is up to the job, then why take him. Glad the top 3 all had good knocks in the warm up and Stokes is bowling well. Lets hope the rest all slots into place and make the Aussies play catch up for a change | | | |

Still feel that if we win the toss, we bat and post a decent total and hopefully set the tone of the series. I think Stokes, Atkinson and Pope (yes I said it) will be the stand out players this series. And sad to say, Woods will be one player we regret taking Lets bring it on

May as well play Wood now before he explodes once and for all. Hence play 5 seamers surely as then if / when he breaks down it won't matter as much. As always when playing out there, I am very pessimistic. Just maybe if we could get off to a good start for once, from ball 1, in contrast to Burns being bowled, Harmison bowling to second slip, DeFreitas long hop being cut for 4....it might be OK. Even that series we won I think if I remember right Strauss cut it to gulley in the first over. Come on England!

Shocked because he has no county, or shocked because they selected him? His county record is dreadful and went on loan to div 2 last season making no impact and eventually being dropped. There are several (possibly double figures) better spinners in England. It’s an ego selection since they picked him off a video and then after facing him as a net bowler at an England practice. I hate seeing Test sides without a spinner, so I’d probably play him over Carse and keep Carse fresh for when one of Archer or Wood breaks down. Stokes seems fit so they’ll get overs from him. England have made their bed and need to lie in it regards the spinner spot. I still thing England should win the Test. And, at the risk of a “Brisbane II”, if the pitch is still green on the morning of the Test, I’d bowl first…much like we did in Melbourne 2010. I think this pitch might get easier to bat on…

Yes, they are missing two bowlers and their batting line-up is flaky to say the least. I think England have a great chance in this Test.
| Ashes thread on 13:27 - Nov 19 with 1368 views | Rangersw12 | Really looking forward to the series and will be getting up to watch I think we have a great chance and with Carse at 8 and Atkinson at 9 we have a long battling lineup which is the opposite of the Aussies who have Stac at 8 . I can't see the first two tests lasting 5 days so the batters need to carry on the attacking mentality as quick fire 40/50's on low scoring bowler friendly pitches could make the difference. Come on England | | | |

This time next year, England finally return to South Africa after a six year gap. Cape Town Newlands 2020 was an amazing match - Stokes again with a quick fire 75 then an awesome bowling spell to win the match in the last hour. 12 hour flight but no jet lag! The match v India was really good but it is wierd how bad India are in home tests now, after being whitewashed by NZ last year. Hope The Ashes is just as entertaining.

If I am honest, a bit of both TBH, I have not seen a decent spinner in the county game or the England set up for an age. Who are these better spinners? We dont seem to have prepared pitches for spin. That said, playing red ball cricket in April and September would explain a lot. I agree with you, we need a spinner and not the part time option. Regards to bowling first, all too often we have seen that go wrong, and as mentioned further below I know Stokes loves to chase but sometimes runs on the board is better than chasing a big total - Just ask the Kent Batsmen this year
| Ashes thread on 18:44 - Nov 19 with 1131 views | captainmycaptian | Got to agree with one of thr posters.on here that said get a result in Perth win or draw and it's on. Need wood and archer to be steaming in like trains especially in perth and brisbane. Bashir will play in adelaide, where swan and peterson smashed them great ground. If a few of the top order can get up in the 500 hundred in the series then there is a chance. First tedt vital. Maybe the Aussies will slip.up (unlikely) | | | |

| Ashes thread on 23:38 - Nov 19 with 1002 views | numptydumpty | The first session of the first test will be key. England 147 for 0 if we bat Australia 62 for 7 if we bowl Either way whitewash on the way !!!!! | |

Spinner situation is weird & Aussie batsman will end his career if not up to it - targeted far more accomplished spinners in past. Lyon so successful & have irrational dislike - seems like chap who’d cause a ruck in the pub then hide behind big mates as kicked off - nothing to base this on but am convinced… Great opportunity for England to create at least some doubt in the always self assured Aussies & go 1-0 up.

For anyone with a VPN, you can watch live via: https://7plus.com.au/live-tv?channel-id=Seven Just set up an account with any Aussie postcode. Perth is 6000 - for example. Select Australia, maybe turn off the mobile signal and use WiFi in plane mode if it’s your phone, and Bob’s your uncle.

Yes who are these county spinners who are ready to improve on Bashir's test record? Obviously Bash's record flatters him, and I suspect the younger Ahmed will take his squad place very soon, but who are these other spinners? All those going on about "county performers" like Dawson had that theory totally kiboshed within about six overs of him playing another test, for example. It's always a totally different game once some twirler for a county side for a hundred years has to bowl on a Test pitch to world-class players.
