| Ashes thread on 11:25 - Nov 21 by GaryBannister86 | What do we think from here? Apparently the track does tend to flatten out, but it only going to be the start of Day 2 (hopefully) we bat. I'd like a 350 lead to defend but I am not quite sure how we are going to get there. I guess because of the potential flattening out we are hardly going to hang around. Should be a cracking Test, regardless. If you told me this time yesterday we would take 9 Aussie wickets on the first day I would have been ecstatic. Naturally, we'd have lost 10 in the first place, but I probably would have been less surprised by that! Reminds me of the 90s tours when you would wake up for the last session and see Gooch and Athers still batting and think we must have turned it around with a 200 run opening partnership, then discovered we were actually bowled out for 100 and following on :-) |
I know it's obvious, but it's really all about whether our batting lineup can step up now and match the bowlers. Huge opportunity for them to set a competitive total on a flattening pitch against a weakened Aussie attack. Do that, and you'd surely back us to take 10 wickets in the two and a half days (or more) we'd have left. Fall short of 200 / 250ish again and it's a very different proposition. In a weird way, even though our batting was worse than theirs in the first innings I'd rather be in our position. Cut out the cheap wickets and you can see opportunities - Boland in particular looks gettable. Australia didn't even bat particularly badly, we've just absolutely steamrollered them. It's all there for us, we've just got to sort the batting out. [Post edited 21 Nov 17:49]

| Ashes thread on 17:04 - Nov 21 with 1691 views | Superhoops2808 | Get old 'Ratty' out first thing this morning then take our time and build a 2nd innings lead. The Aussies batting is too fragile to chase a decent score of 300 Social Media (And even here), people dont learn... Wait for both sides to bat first. Stars of the day clearly were Stokes and Starc. For me that says a lot about the pitch but what do I know. One guy was self combusting I am sure over Crawley... Till Root did exactly the same thing I said bat first and get runs on the board. Looks like we may have a lead of around 40 odd runs. Our stats prove we can win a test away from home when batting first - Still confident we will be 1 up at the end of this test. Also, didnt realise there was such a decent gap between the first 3 tests. That will play in to our favour I think allowing Wood/Archer to get fresh | | | |

| Ashes thread on 14:55 - Nov 21 by Rsole | There were some poor batting choices and shots made by both sides, interspersed with some excellent bowling. |
What really got my goat was the tailenders getting out to some really cheap shots, instead of playing around Jamie Smith. He was in good touch, scoring at a decent rate. Carse in particular was an awful dismissal.

To be fair, they got it half right - It was the Starc and Stokes show. However, our other bowlers backed up really well especially by Archer and Gus Atkinson, the Aussie bowlers were shocking. Boland going at more than 6 an over for example

I'm glad you added that last sentence, because in truth Crawley didnt do much wrong but was done by the extra bounce that Starc found coupled with a superb catch (that I am not sure why it took so long to check) But even as a fan of Crawley I cannot realistically see him keeping his place in this team past this series unless he produces a few big scores.

It’s all very entertaining and a great advert for the game. It’s got a bunch of us up at a stupid hour glued to it and thousands of fans spending thousands on tour ! I don’t think they will drop him for this series but he’s apparently averaging 30 and Pope is averaging 45 over the last 12 months - but Pope is under a lot more pressure for some reason. He actually looks a lot more comfortable at the crease too - in this game. I guess it’s more down to who replaces them and Pope has more obvious pressure on his place, as they are betting on Bethell long term. There was a pretty decent knock by the Lions opener in both innings during the warm up game but that pitch was a very different pitch to this one - not to mention the environment and pressure. Just watch Duckett and Head constantly going after each other - Duckett never seems to let it bother him much. That’s just experience and temperament from playing under pressure - probably not the time to throw someone new into the mix. More the obsessive planning around one player that’s the issue for me, when there’s been such a team focus for everything else. As for the catch - Aussie TV has Simon Taufell explaining the analysis and the focus on catches in particular - HD allows for a serious review and they have clearly been told to triple check. To the naked eye it looked 100% clean in real time but they are going to check them all.

The Aussie TV coverage is very good -free to air, so lots of ads and switching between channels by region but they pick up on the details well, plus there’s a good balance of experts on comms and on call for analysis. Reminds me of the old C4 team that they had many years ago.

Very minimal spike after the bat has passed the ball with no evident deviation. Just a thought - occasionally technology goes wrong. I think if 200 or more is the target, we could win, but anything below, we are in big trouble ! [Post edited 22 Nov 6:30]

At this stage, Australia still need to get the biggest innings total of the game when they bat. Two of them may not bat…..

Problem is Jamie Smith gave the third umpire an out, admitting his guilt really. By the letter of the law (which everyone forgets) benefit of the doubt goes to the batter....
