Thanks Clive, got me through a rather tedious afternoon at work.

Work most definitely to be done, let's hope it comes together tomorrow night.

On the Nardi conversation I feel very much you reap what you sow, very similar to the Paal situation last season as you touched upon. Doing what we have done for the last 10-15 years, plenty of chat, very little minerals or nous to execute it.

The other thing that I meant to say on Nardi, and will perhaps use in the preview, is that the issues with his game are not new and we shouldn't be surprised by them.

Greg Spires when we signed him in his analysis said...

"There was evidence of him being unconvincing, where he stuck to his six-yard-box or waited too long to rush out to attackers....

"... he doesn’t seem as strong or commanding at claiming crosses and high-balls as Dieng or Begovic were, from what I can see."

So where's out data and analytics on that, if the fcking LFW analyst can see that?

Also doesn't say much for the work being done with the goalkeepers at Heston.

Perhaps he should be sent to Hendon where these problems can be arrested.

Er yeah surely the aim of coaching is to improve on any weaknesses?

Overall though it just feels like after our burst of positive results, we've been found out by other teams who have adapted their game accordingly. Same also for Dunne as RB who has not been half as effective this season compared to last.

Of course as ever in this division there's a lot to be said just for adding work rate/pace and width. Hopefully the manager is realising this.

I did say a couple of weeks ago a lot of ball playing GKs and CBs are going to be caught out with teams becoming more direct. Looks like Nardi was bought to play in a different era.

He was a freebie and probably meant as a one season stop gap.
In fairness to the club they did try and move him on, so they did identify the issue. The failure was not actually replacing him.

Same failure as with Paal a year ago.

If you say to somebody in the summer you're no longer wanted, you do then have to move them on. If you end up relying on them for 40+ games that's rarely going to end very well.

If you end up with your first choice as an out-of-form 31-year-old you don't even want in your squad, and your second choice is a 37-year-old who effectively retired 18 months ago, that position has been mismanaged.

I guess, like many of us, management were counting on Walsh taking over the #1 shirt. It seemed as though it was his time, as he'd shown the ability in his few outings until the K.O against Preston. Following that his injury only compounded the issue. Was it bad luck, bad planning, or a bit of both?

Well it's open to debate isn't it? I would say taking somebody who has played two games of league football in his life (and didn't have good loan spells either btw) and saying you're our Championship keeper, 40 games, off you go was very, very ambitious/naive/arrogant depending how harsh you want to be. Like cobbing your toddler into Plymouth harbour by way of a swimming lesson. Doing that at the same time as you're changing managers and re-inflicting the pass-out-from-the-back stuff, which hasn't worked with these players before, made it doubly difficult for him.

I get the "if not now then when?" stuff, because I said as much in his write ups at the end of last season, but it always made more sense to me to start with a senior keeper (if not Nardi then A N Other) with the aim of easing Walsh in for the second half of the season once we're up and running.

Was that decision driven by the genuine belief that Joe Walsh was really a Championship goalkeeper? Or just this desire to drag down the average age of the team for "the project"? I knew Walsh was likely to be the number one here this season very, very early in the summer and said as much on Gab Sutton's season preview show.

There was an awful lot parroting at the fans forum and from the usual accounts online after Preston that we'd gone from the oldest team in the Championship to the youngest in two years. But that team got its ars handed to it through the first month, and Walsh will do well to recover his career here from what happened to him. Matt Ingram never did.

So Ben Hamer between the sticks until January then?

I mean this does seem like a significant problem, as Nardi's confidence is totally shot, and his anxiety is spreading to the rest of the defence like a virus.

Nardi isn't playing well, but that goes for a lot of the team right now. Dunne, Varane, Vale, Kone have all regressed the last few weeks. It's a collective drop in form, Nardi is just a part of that.

Putting in an old man with as much time between the sticks as me the last few years would be drastic AF. He wasn't even that good to begin with.

The bed is made, Nardi is the guy until Jan at least.

Having supported this club for a long and arduous time I have stood/sat behind some fantastic QPR and England goalkeepers.

Yeh Hamer, even when he was 27, is a career back up goalkeeper. He was a starter for Crawley in 06/07, Brentford in 08/09 and Charlton from 2011 to 2014. He hasn't played a game at all for 18 months and in the last 11 years he's got barely 100 appearances to his name for nine different clubs.

Is that why Walsh had been made first choice?

Well yeh it's pretty clear they didn't rate Nardi. The way they've acted on that though was... risky.

Will have a listen before i head to the game. I’m feeling pretty negative at the moment but I still think our squad is decent. Not playoff standard maybe but we should be more than good enough for mid table.
