| Sam field 22:51 - Jan 4 with 2364 views | wombat | Was nice to see Sam back in midfield today doing Sam field stuff, tackling keeping with runners , getting forward with the ball . All sadly missing from varanne in recent months , hopefully he stays there for the foreseeable future . | |

| Sam field on 19:56 - Jan 5 with 1971 views | MrSheen | I joked when he came on that that he was just the man to help us cling on to our 1-0 lead, and for the next 45 minutes it’s what he mostly did. He got in front of the ball player a few times when Wednesday got something going but also broke ahead of the ball on a number of occasions when we had a chance to counter attack. Nothing fancy, but he should be pleased with what he contributed. | | | |
| Sam field on 19:59 - Jan 5 with 1936 views | daveB | He passed the ball forwards which was a joy to see after 45 mins of Varane | | | |

I was dying for him to take the shot anyway, even after it was flagged offside - I want to see him score one on one with the keeper ! I think that was the passage of play during which Dembele turned his back on the game and strolled back towards the halfway line, rather than - I don't know - bust a gut to support a breakway attack. Disappointing stuff from him. He comes across as a decent guy in interviews, but his in game attitude appears to properly stink sometimes [Post edited 6 Jan 8:19]

| Sam field on 09:05 - Jan 6 with 1420 views | nix | One thing I would criticise Stephan for is how he’s used Sam this season. When he has had a chance he’s either played out of position- and not really done too badly except as attacking mid which I think is not his thing - or partnered with the wrong person. So being played without Madsen and then taken off when the midfield is obviously stodgy without anyone creative. They seem to prefer Madsen on the left but I’m sure he could adapt to playing on the right at times, he quite often finds himself there and Sam can play the more defensive, midfielder on the left. | | | |
| Sam field on 09:18 - Jan 6 with 1393 views | sdm1508 | I believe that Madsen is probably out most creative outlet in terms of his passing range, eye for a pass and the ability to actually do it. The pass for Burrell's goal, a case in point. Lovely simple first-time pass after he received it from Jimmy and then the good old slide rule pass. Although he has improved in his defensive game play this season, he needs someone next to him who is very good at this and is consistent. Varane although having the physical attributes is lacking in the consistency and has quite a few brain farts in a game. Someone like Field, who know what he is good at to sit and break the play up and pass it to someone who can get the play progressing. Now, there is no way I am saying they are at this level, but I think we are almost looking for a Wilkins, Barker/Holloway set up. | | | |

been saying that since madson broke into the team , two dog workers alongside him to give him the space and time on the ball, issue then would be us going back to one up front prob , a hadyn field madson middle three would be a an option .

It is bewildering. Although it does feel like our dear CEO has decided that Varane and Madsen are our most sellable assets (...) and must play every game. Inevitably that's now done for Varane, I do fear for Madsen that he might be next on the injury list.

Listen to Madsens interview on the W12 Podcast. By playing two destroyers next to Madsen, you would in effect be moving Madsen into the 10 role. Madsen, in the interview, said the 10 in England is completely different to 10 in Europe, and he couldn't do it. He now looks much better in a deeper role.

Madsen appears to be playing through an injury to me. At West Brom second half he looked done, and he was limping again end of first half against Sheff Wed. Credit to him for putting his hand up to do it if that is the case, given he was criticised for bravery etc last season, but you risk losing him for longer if it goes wrong.
| Sam field on 10:38 - Jan 6 with 1200 views | sdm1508 | What I like about Madsen is that he has become a bit of a bully on the pitch. Quite happy to throw his weight about and also have a go at players. Also when he loses the ball, he now works hard to get it back. I think him and Field would work well together. Field was anticipating the danger behind him and tracking runners. Field might not be as quick has Varane physically but he more than makes up for it by being quicker in the head and anticipating danger. Same with Hayden. The double tackle Hayden made in the centre of the pitch the other day was controlled aggression. I felt if it was Varane, if probably would have been a wild lunge, where he either got booked or worse, or completely mucked it up and over committed missed everything and the player broke away | | | |

Madsen has played very well this season, but does appear to be tiring/tapering off performance wise. That is very understandable. He’s been flogged. There is a case to say you rest him in one of the next couple of games so as not to cause an injury that keeps him on the sidelines for a while. I’d like to see Field alongside him. Field was a distinct improvement on Varane on Sunday. I’d like to see this partnership. If you then need to rest Madsen, given Morgan some minutes. We’re not going up or down. Field is under contract for years because of that extension. And he’s on big money now supposedly so unlikely anyone else will be able to match it. He’s still a leader in this squad. He’s always available. Alienating him seems short sighted and petty, imo. After his service to the club, he deserves better. Without Varane out, he should start week in, week out. Hayden is not sellable and on a short term deal.

I’m worried about that too. Burrell and Madsen have always seemed the most at risk given the number of minutes and the amount each of them is involved and the ground they cover. Surprised they didn’t give Burrell a rest as I think we have other options for him (maybe not like for like but still someone could play a similar link up role) but Madsen is more of an issue as I don’t think we have a natural replacement for him. His passing accuracy is so much better than the rest of the team plus his creative passing is off the scale better compared to anyone other than Chair, who is unfortunately out. Field, Varane and Hayden cannot do the same kind of role.

madson got a kick in the first half ankle or foot and he was hobbling for a fair while after it as well . his turnaround has been biblical from last season hes getting into tackles more using his body more when hes got the ball as well , im eating a large portion of humble pie this season thats for sure. id like to see field hadyn and madson on sunday with kone up front ,

Chair will be a real boost if we can get him back soon. Picks it up from deep and progresses the ball forward in a way that only Madsen is doing for us at the moment. Would allow us to continue playing forward while giving Varane a rest.
| Sam field on 11:45 - Jan 6 with 1019 views | Lblock | Unfortunately I think we'll be seeing Sam at Left Back on Sunday -- I cannot see RND being allowed to play by Chef Utd. Fair play to him doing a job there but it's not one I find him suited to and if Bowen starts or comes on at anytime then grab those rosary beads and pray. (Not that I think RND or Esky would be the answer either). I'm hopeful that Sam will retun to "first name on the teamsheet" standing back nine of the season. He really has been Mr Reliable for huge parts of his time with us and I thought he was future Captain material in days gone by. | |

Is that up to them? If they want to recall him, go ahead. Otherwise, if he's not cup tied, we'll play him as we see fit.

Usually the case that parent club needs to allow permission for any cup appearance for the club on loan at. Granted this isn't usually an issue that surfaces here.........

| Sam field on 14:20 - Jan 6 with 841 views | Rsole | I’d be very happy to see him back in Midfield, doing what he was signed to do, more regularly. Alongside Hayden (or Morgan) and Madsen, there would be a good balance of skills in a 433. Now we may have lost Burrell and have some time to prepare for a local game - why not try it out in training and have Kolli start with Kone and one of the Ant Hill mob ? Smyth would get my vote for speed on the right, to give us the out all. Would be good to have a plan B for the next run of league games too. | |

Not really I'm just curious why your constant disparaging posting about the club and players has continued after a 3-0 win, normally you stay logged out for the week? So a game that was 2-1 is the only game you could bring up out of 27 this season. Just another post that you are so confident with but so objectively wrong. Like with your OP, you can praise Sam Field for stepping in with great defensive work which is true but to then use that to further this Varane agenda you have going on is weird. Varane led the team in defensive numbers, we factually did lose some control of the game after the change. It was one of his better games yet you can't stop yourself, like the Mbengue comments in another thread after he's been in great form and is loved by the match going fans

Hi Sam/ Matt not been a. Lot over Xmas I’d say is close to be going decent for a start Portsmouth awful West Brom awful . Funnily enough a fair few people have been saying roughly the same things esp about varanne who in prob the last 4 games has been Way below standard he did play like others well v Leicester though . With ref mebenge he’s a half decent full back once again as said by others ,he does get a free pass I’d say because he’s a. Character , his nickname where I sit is funny dou dou mad as a box frogs occasional brilliance and also the odd rash tackle or two. an improvement on dunne at right back for sure though . U might want to check back it’s been said a few few times this season by me and a fair few others esp those who go to the games who beg for a substitution think even Clive’s write up ofwest Brom said the same thing. Do find it interesting that most of your reply’s on threads are after something I’ve said ummmm . As for plan b. As mentioned earlier. I’m not sure there is one at the Monment esp if Frey leaves as seems likely As for the going missing after w in once again wide of the mark , spend way to much time on here most days . As always look forward to you next reply Sam . [Post edited 6 Jan 23:00]
