The first half of Sirat is one of the most astonishing things I've ever seen.
Then something horrible happens, and it gets very cruel, and the characterisation is too thin to pull it off imo. Meanders out and I was waiting for it to end. Odd experience |
I'd forgotten about Sirat - it's a brilliant first half, and then when the 'thing' happens, it all goes wrong. It could have gone anywhere, but the route it went was the worst one. |  |

Well. I get it. It's not Silent Running (although it'd like to be), and it's not as good as the Martian but there's something there. Gosling was excellent, and I enjoyed the back and forth of the narrative, but it felt a bit off. I don't know if it was learning 'Rocky' in 10 minutes or something else, but the relationship didn't really sit with me. Still worth a watch though. | |

I know what you mean, but as someone that didn't read the book, I was OK with them skirting over the communication, etc. It was unrealistic - especially when compared to something like Arrival which covered that particular topic brilliantly - but we knew they were going to get there and it was fine.
Agree 100% with your assessment, not quite as good as The Martian but still very fun and Gosling is great. That guy really is top tier Hollywood stuff. |  |

If you're into documentaries, give Afternoons of Solitude a go.
No commentary, no interviews, but very up close and personal filming about a contentious issue that doesn't really seek to judge one way or another, just shows everything. The rituals, the brutality, the ceremony... Difficult to watch at times and hard to say I 'enjoyed' a film with so much cruelty on display, but the way it's shown was captivating. Man, I didn't get on with Project Hail Mary at all. I had a few issues with it.
I liked the basic premise and there was a chance there to do something clever and tense with it but instead you just had Ryan Gosling doing his best Ryan Reynolds impression. Making silly faces in rooms where no else was there and falling over for comic effect.
Rocky was just another coo-ey, squawky mascot character. A Baby Yoda or that thing from Predator Badlands. Silliness.
I've not read the book but they really made some proper leaps of faith with the writing. And it was all done at a level of schmaltz comparable with Ted Lasso.

Buffet Infinity.
Okay this was weird. A story about an ever-expanding all-you-can eat buffet that's swallowing up an entire neighbour. There's some sort of baffling Lovecraftian thing going on in the background too.
The thing is, the whole story is told through low-quality, local access TV adverts. So it's often shown at bad VHS quality with lots of spooky distortions. As such it's almost impossible to follow but it did have moments.

Obsession
Excellent comic horror with a Barbarian sensibility and mood. Loved it.
The Drama – Robert Pattinson seems to pick great roles. I wasn't sure if that had coloured my view, but this was really fun. Zendaya is excellent too, and the tension - again with comic effect - was nicely handled.

Watched Apex this weekend. I thought it was a really good film. Enjoyed it. Nothing too deep or dramatic or anything spectacular. An easy watch. Enjoyable thriller, that kinda reminded me of a 90s sort of film.
Michael Jackson. I got to say i really enjoyed it. What a superstar, in a completely different world to the one today. It obviously wasn't going to dig into the dark side of his story, but quite frankly, i thought that was a good thing. Just harked back to a more innocent times.
The music, his dancing and just his superstar aura really worked well in this film. Part 2 will be interesting. Not sure how they can carry on with rose tinted lenses through to the end of his story. |  |
