The party is tumbling in the polls and elections but the muppets just seem to want to drive a further wedge through it and split. They really need to see the bigger picture and pull together. This is a great thread, no abuse on either side, so it's been interesting reading it.
Immigration is tolerated when a country is financially doing well. Post WW2, we had Windrush to help the country rebuild , but then the backlash during the 1970s and early 80s. Then Eastern European migration in 2001 onwards and more coming from sub India, but the backlash has begun again due to the economic issues since 2010.
Labour and the Tories have got themselves in a mess, a bit like the Dems and GOP in the US did and that led to the rise of Trump.
I'm an old school one nation Conservative with a small 'c', one of Thatchers children of the 80s, but I've lost faith in them.
I'll never vote Reform, but I wouldn't be bothered if they got in. My kids get nothing, yet everyone else does.
I fear for society if the economy does not improve in ghe next 18 months (which it wont), everything feels like a tinder box ready to explode.
And then Labour have reopened the Brexit wounds. | |

Well you sounded confident so I checked and it turns out you're wrong unfortunately. The number of billionaires has fallen from 167 to 157. Good progress, but not quite fast enough to get them to zero in a decent time frame.
Still if we can up the speed of their departure and continue the arrivals of asylum seekers in large numbers we will all be rich soon. Although not too rich hopefully as then we'd be the problem and we'd all have to leave the country as well. | | | |

I’m reading a book called Lovers and Strangers by Clair Wills.Its about the immigrants that came over after WW2 and their stories.They faced just as much racism and abuse as today’s migrants do.
It seems like the same arguments from 75 years ago on repeat.
They’re taking all our jobs,houses,benefits and women were some of the phrases from the book,and little seems to have changed. |  | | |

Not sure where you're getting that from, but it was 156 last year so we've added one. Of more relevance though "The wealth of Britain’s 157 billionaires is now equivalent to more than a fifth of the country’s entire GDP, according to analysis by the Equality Trust – a fivefold increase since 1990"

The political situation in this country is really depressing. I can't get over quite how bad labour have been. The cabinet is such low level. When they started off in 97 they had some ability there, but not this time. If but ham or Rayner get in things can only get worse as they will spend and borrow more, the interest rate on the debt will go up and we will be in imf bailout territory. To turn around 14 years of austerity takes an awful lot of money unfortunately.Where does that extra money come from?Us unfortunately,from higher taxes.The tories gave us austerity and still put our taxes up.To bring down waiting lists isn’t cheap.

I was going to make that clear in the previous post, but I didn't think you would be petty enough to ignore the previous large drop and try to pretend it's the highest it's ever been at 157 this year. You live and learn.
Yes we've encouraged billionaires who have earned and paid tax on their worldwide fortunes to live in the UK as we have a stable political culture. You can try making them leave, but I don't think it's going to make us all rich. | | | |

It's not really about the number of individual billionaires in the UK either. These ebb and flow as people die, relocate, or hide it away in shell companies or tax shelters.
It's about capital and who has their hands on it, or even better control of it. Obviously, I think it should be in the hands of those on the sharp end of producing it.
