Sorry, I know politics is taboo on here but I just can't believe how intent the Labour party are to push the self-destruct button. The party is tumbling in the polls and elections but the muppets just seem to want to drive a further wedge through it and split. They really need to see the bigger picture and pull together. It wouldn't be so bad if those in opposition were more central but unfortunately I fear this is just opening the door for NF to wheedle his way in. All very depressing.

You need to give us evidence, not just vibes mate.

There are 300,000 long term empty houses in the UK.

I wonder what evidence you would need to understand increasing the population puts pressure on housing. It's self evident isn't it? As the population increases there are fewer houses per person and it makes it harder for people to find somewhere to live at the margins.

I also don't understand what quoting some amount of empty housing is supposed to prove either. 300k of 27 million dwellings is about 1.1% which is completely normal as people die etc and it takes time for the houses to get sold. You can never have 0% of empty houses in a functioning market and 1.1% is pretty low. How does any of that mean population increase doesn't put pressure on houses anyway?

I don't really expect a logic response to be honest, I find the political views of some to be completely illogical and baffling, but I suppose it all makes sense to you somehow.

If there are more empty long term houses than there are immigrants, then immigration isn't a issue for housing is it?

Long term empty houses are.

Now, I suppose you could argue that the owners of those houses have the right to leave their homes empty, but that would mean trumping the rights of those needing a home (immigrants or otherwise).

Call me a communist if you like (which is the usual inevitability) but I think a nurse or any of the other working poor who fulfils all the usual criteria you guys demand about integrating and speaking English should have somewhere secure to live, and they currently can't:

Baz I am baffled. 300k is far fewer than the number of immigrants.

Whether there were migrants here or not the houses would still be empty due to deaths etc.

An increase in population through migration puts pressure on housing regardless of whether there are some houses empty or not.

I have no idea what you are wibbling on about rights or speaking English, no one mentioned that, we're talking about a very simple logic where increasing the population will put pressure on housing .

I think if you have to completely deny basic reality for your worldview to make some sense, then maybe it's time to rethink things a bit.

Some points Clive.

- 300k is fewer than the number of immigrants. But not housed immigrants. Housed immigrants don't need another house do they?

- Long term housing means just that. They do not include recent deaths and there certainly isn'y 300,000 of them.

- You are right an increase in population puts pressure on housing regardless. But 66% of births are to those born here. Why immigration getting a special mention unless it's the obvious?

- No one mentioned rights or speaking English, granted, but i've made an assumption in the same way you've made an assumption about my world view.

The basic point is, you stop immigrations at 0 tomorrow, you'll still have a housing problem. You are barking at cars.

We definitely have, but to say that adding more people to the mix isn't exacerbating it is ridiculous. And it's not a dichotomy to say this and that it isn't their fault, Britain has been managed appallingly.

If I had to wear a political cap, it would be that of blue labour. Uncontrolled immigration has a negative affect on housing, on jobs, on wages. And I don't blame those coming over for taking an opportunity offered to them.

High immigration, high house prices, high cost of living leading to high benefit dependence and lower real time wages - what a mix. Well done all the parties involved. I think we are at the stage where we need to put aside dogma and politics and have a government of national unity. I also think social media, and its effect on our brains, make this scenario evermore unlikely.

6. Conclusion
Research investigating the effect of immigration on house prices has considerably grown over the past
decade. Understanding the economic impact of immigration in the UK is extremely important due to its
controversial nature and the effect on the housing market remains a crucial aspect of this. Therefore this
paper enhances our understanding of the effect of immigration by estimating the recent relationship
between immigration and UK house prices utilising multiple techniques and further exploring the
mechanisms driving results.
Summarising the results, immigration is found to have a significant, negative impact on UK house
prices. Using data for 80 local authorities in England and Wales, results suggest that an increase in the
stock of immigrants equal to 1% of the local population leads to a 3.8% reduction in house prices,
confirming previous findings of a negative relationship for the UK. System GMM estimates weakly
supports results but more importantly highlights steps taken to find alternative solutions for the
endogeneity persistent throughout. Future literature should explore this method further or alternatively
consider the multiple instrumentation procedure as a solution.

As I said earlier, we have a rich feckers problem, not an immigrant one. At least, not for the reasons certain people claim.

My initial look into this reveals that this is very localised - a large influx of immigrants into an area can lead to 'white flight' and a lowering of house prices in that area, particularly as immigrants are much more likely to rent then buy.
There are many studies that show that increasing the population overall increases house prices overall .
I'll step away from this now.

This site has some interesting statistics which make the housing crisis look solvable https://homesforeveryone.org/

How to solve the housing crisis for people, nature and the climate
1.5 millon+ derelict homes renovated.
1 million+ unbuilt homes already with permission, built.
1.4 million homes developed on brownfield sites, first.
165,000 empty commercial properties repurposed.
26 million empty bedrooms incentivised for rental.
Millions of homes left undisturbed for nature.
Country's entire carbon budget not used up.

As someone mentioned above, housing is supply and demand. Given the rising population (not just immigration) supply has been constrained. The effect is demand outstrips supply and forces prices up. In rural France, where I'm living its the opposite.

1 of the promises Labour made was to build 1.5m homes within 5 years. Its a figure that hasn't been achieved for decades and I doubt it will be met this time.

Utopia, right there. Firstly who's paying for it? 26 million bedrooms revitalised. šŸ˜‚

I really dont think immigrants are the problem atm . Wealth disparity is getting worse. We've come to the end of the line of capitalism. Too many billionaires running the show. No political party can make a difference.
I dont know what the answer is, but since Brexit, things have got worse, not better.
I welcome immigrants. the more the merrier. Fk it, ive worked alongside them, as we all have, and most of them are sound as a pound , hard working and just want a decent life, as we all do.
Putting up borders and dividing people is the work of the devil. The only way the human race survives, is if we all work together. Those billionaires in their ivory towers don't want that, as that would mean giving up some of their wealth. Greedy c**ts.

Yes, in a nutshell: too much wealth in too few hands.

Expecting multi-millionaire and billionaire politicians to do anything but exacerbate that is delusional to say the least.

I'm not exactly political but I know that running this country is basically impossible.

And bless him but whatever Starmer does, people are going to call him a tw@t.

Here's the one thing I do know. The worst person I've ever worked with. A proper useless prick. Did f**k all for years. Was known for being f**king useless and absolutely honking of piss. He finally got a pay off to leave (they couldn't get rid of him because he was unioned-up so heavily). I'm telling you, this piece of shit did nothing. He never even logged on for work on a computer. Occasionally checked his emails on a tablet, that was it. Never responded. Absolute waste of skin.

He stood as a Reform councillor and WON two weeks ago. He's a fat fcking urine walrus and he fking won. They could have picked a cow straight off a field and put a Reform sticker on it and it would have won.

He was also life-long Labour until recently and is also pulling some weird reborn Christian act too. But I'm telling you, most useless c*nt since SWP in a hooped shirt. On the plus side, the c**t is 30+ stone and never shows up for work so the ward he's representing will probably never see the c*nt.

Not jumping to conclusions and standing out on a limb here but it sounds like you do not like this man at all Bluce Ree

Streeting was unequivocal about where he thinks the fault lies, and that's Brexit. I criticised him earlier in the thread, but he's nailed his colours to the mast. That will be problematic for Burnham; if he pushes back, he'll lose the majority opinion now that, if the referendum were run now, the majority would have voted to Remain.

Makerfield - his potential constituency - voted 75% in favour of Brexit at the time. I haven't seen polling figures that reflect the current opinion in the area - might be a toiugh one for Burnham to explain.

You need to give us evidence, not just vibes mate.

There are 300,000 long term empty houses in the UK.

Where are these houses and what state are they currently in ??

Reason I ask in my town where I live we have a hotel full to the brim of LEGAL migrants. They are all Afghans and their families. But they helped fight the war against the Taliban, so in return for their bravery in a war we had involvement in, they are here legally.

There are arounds 700 in a hotel that was disused and the idea is where they are in this hotel is a stop gap, ie to be found suitable housing anywhere in the country.

They were meant to be there, a maximum of a couple of months, but many have been there over 18 months.

If there are as you say 300k long term empty houses in the country why on earth arent these 700 placed there. Either its an administration issue or there are less available than you state or the amount of money required to get certain housing habitable is a heck of a lot more than building new homes all round the country.

All councils have a quota of new homes to be built in all areas and councils are fined if they dont meet this, so there are many many more new homes being built. Old disused homes may cost way more to get habitable than those built from scratch.

Its not as easy as throwing out one such random stat, as you well know Bazza...

That's besides the point really. The reason House prices have risen 5 times faster than wages isn't because of immigration.

If 2 people are competing for 4 houses (especially at a time when returns on land/property are more than you'd get in banks) 1 of those people is a billionaire the other on the average wage. Who do you think is buying those houses and any land that's going?

Every financial crisis we've had since at least 2008 we've cut interest rates, making assets more attractive as an investment, put the brake on earned income and exacerbated the problem.
