We passed the ball to death. At one point, I saw Ronnie pick up the ball inside the Charlton half, check himself, turn right the way around and pass it back well into our own half because it was the safest thing to do. It most likely took four or five more passes before we had the ball back in their half again.

Thought Kamara was superb last night and Madsen is back on song. Should have won, especially with the Smyth chance. Shame losing Dunne & Lamptey to injuries. Got to say I like Mbengue this season, showing a lot of improvement and dangerous on the right side. Edwards is also starting to play very well. |  | | |

I don’t get it either. We barely won a match for two seasons while not always playing great football and people were more positive on here than they are now. We’re level on points with second and I’ve never heard so much negative talk.
Players are being written off left, right and centre. And the manager isn’t being given much credit either. He’s barely had a minute on the training ground with the players because of the ridiculous schedule of the last couple of weeks so how’s he supposed to be whipping players into coherent shapes, some of whom have barely played together as they’ve only just joined.
Yeah I know you have every right to sound off. And yeah you are just saying your opinion. And yeah you say it as you see it, yada, yada, yada. But hell it’s becoming a hard read at times. After a draw. A draw. Away in London (not exactly a fertile ground for us in the past). Against a team that was obviously going to park the bus after a tonking. And did I mention we’re level on points with second. Jeeze. |

Injuries are an issue but too much negativity about team selections, individual players and performances and some claim the comments are made for ‘comedic effect’ 🙄 |  | | |

Feels like there is a bit of straw man building going on.
Who is being negative about the performance?
Reading through the post match comments, the general comments appear to be:
- we played well with some lovely build up play
- disappointed not to win having dominated the game
- frustration with mounting injuries (again)
That seems pretty balanced and reasonable to me. There might be the odd exception (both more negative and more positive) but the consensus seems pretty fair.
Charlton will not be competing in the top half come the end of the season. They’ll probably be bottom 6. We should be disappointed with not beating them. BUT, we should also acknowledge and praise the excellent control and very tidy build up play we had, if being a tad frustrated with the lack of cutting edge. And we lost two players to injury last night, plus found out Saito is injured (but don’t know why Poku was out). Again, understandable to be frustrated as it could impact our chances in future games.
I really don’t see anywhere this over the top negativity to be pushed back against. There’s some deliberate hyperbole employed by the odd poster for comedic effect, but the consensus seems fair.

You might be right. It’s maybe a build up from all the recent: Kone isn’t good enough, Smyth isn’t good enough, Mbengue isn’t good enough, JCS isn’t good enough. The players that are good enough are too injury prone etc. Or we’re doing well but we haven’t played anyone good yet.

we did pass it around a lot and i was thinking will Madsen or someone try a long shot, charlton defended well and with numbers, trying to play round nearly worked , our corners created little from then that caused panic or a goal threat.
we passed it well, quick and had a good tempo, which i prefer us to do.
losing lamptey and dunne is not good. lamptey was doing well, over lapping and getting past them.

Arrived around 7:30, in my seat by 7:40. Last season I arrived half hour early and missed the first 10-15 minutes. |

Smyth should have scored. If he does, they have to come out of their park-the-bus mode, and then it's game on as we hit them on the break.
So, they defended for their lives, and it worked. Fair play to them with all their injuries; we would have done the same.
Leaburn is injured, and he is critical to their game, seeing as they let Dykes go to Millwall. So, now they are in a really desperate situation.

No, I feel it too as I said in another thread. We had a thread after the last game about how bad the team selection was, and this game it's a lot of "we're toothless", "we're going to be dragged down by injuries and we'll be 15th", "we haven't got good enough strikers" and "Nourry has singlehandedly shot Kolli in the back of the head behind the training ground" (OK, the last one was for comedic effect).
We're 4th, dominated the game and should've won. I'm disappointed we didn't (Charlton were rubbish) but also pleased with the progress vs last year. Maybe I have too low standards but I'm pretty pleased with the start to the season so far, all things considered, though I'm also concerned about the lack of transparency around injuries.
Hopefully we can get a win on Saturday and the mood on here will improve a little! | | | |

Those players all have something to add this season. They all have a role and are all good enough for the Championship, even if as squad players.
And we’ve started pretty well. It may be an easy start but we’ve put the points on the board and have put in some good performances too. Very encouraging.
Deserved to win last night, but didn’t, which is disappointing.
The injuries is an unavoidable one, though. It’s going to attract criticism and negativity, but that’s not unreasonable. It’s been a topic for 2 and a bit seasons now. And we know how it can derail the positive work done with the squad build, on the training ground, and in terms of player values and ultimately player sales.
I’m like what Stephan is doing. And Nourry has done a pretty good job with the squad build for the money spent. I think we can be a top 8 side, but, as Clive said, we need to keep our players fit and available. If Chair or Poku or Saito had been available, would we have broken them down and got the 3 points? It’s hypothetical, but I’d suggest ‘yes’. Equally, the player trading model and that money spent is only a success if we are promoted this season or we sell a player or two for £10m plus, so we can reinvest and continue the model. If players aren’t fit, they won’t be bought for large sums and our model stalls and we risk breaching FFP…
Equally, If we can’t get results because of injuries and finish lower than we should, we can’t say it’s “bad luck” though. Not for a 3rd season straight. [Post edited 10 Sep 20:11]

defensively and moved the ball beautifully. I do worry, though, that even if our current uptick in form continues, our inefficient finishing will prevent us from converting dominance into wins.

Not read the whole thread, but I hope E17hoop has got some feedback on how people felt entering the ground went. For me, I thought it was fine and 100% better than last time. I was outside for 20 minutes waiting for some friends, so watch it for a while and there seemed to be no issues at all. As I think someone else commented, once inside there was a whole phalanx of security guards doing pat downs and bag checks but I got through quickly enough. |  | | |

If Vale’s early shot had gone in the top corner, we would have won handsomely I think as Charlton were awful. Frustrating |  |
