| Whats it all about Alfie? on 07:02 - Sep 20 by loftboy | Little pedantic point, people saying the miss cost us 3 points, had he scored then what happened after would have been different to what did happen. Smiffy might not of even had his shot. |
Ha yes I always think this when people talk about counterfactuals in football. If low budget sci-fi time-loopers have taught us anything it's that there's no way of knowing what happened on the alternative timeline. Alfie could have scored and we lost 3-2

| Whats it all about Alfie? on 18:58 - Sep 19 by Shunter | Sorry to say, though I love Alfie's enthusiasm, he can't score and hardly hits the target, and Kolli doesn't even make the subs bench.............CRAZY ! |
Fantastic effort and enthusiasm and can cause opposition problems just from the energy he brings, no where near Championship level for his football ability though, couple of divisions below at best.
| Whats it all about Alfie? on 08:58 - Sep 20 with 1467 views | PlanetHonneywood | Just seen the highlights and yes, that's a poor miss. My immediate thought: he's started to celebrate that nonosecond too early. His effort seconds later was, however, great skill by him and sadly, a great save. A few games back, I commented that you'd hope an important chance would fall to others currently. However, he scores that header, then things might change. Who knows? Because I'm sure I'm not the only one to have noticed how dejected Alfredo looked at the end of the game because he knows. Not sure what's happening with the Coventry lad or, he who cannot be named, but if they can get anywhere near an appearance, they'd surely get the nod over Alfredo. | |

| Whats it all about Alfie? on 20:05 - Sep 19 by bosh67 | My feeling is he is turning up in the positions to score more frequently and the goals will come. |
He was on for 10 minutes and unlucky not to score at least one. He’s a handful and I have no doubt he has a part to play for us this season. He has certainly proved more useful than Kone so far this season. His goal will come. He makes things happen and gets involved. Keep going young man.
| Whats it all about Alfie? on 10:11 - Sep 20 with 1287 views | ArvoSturm | I agree, the first chance he should have scored, and he'll know it. Overall point on Alfie, he needs to score and soon, for his confidence. But I think there is a player in there. His natural strength and pace and disruptiveness, in one of the most physical leagues in the world, is a rare asset, and I suspect it's why JS is investing some patience in him. An overall point on our imperfect knowledge as fans. The club knows our players so much better than we do, observing what they can do in training, etc, and sometimes they will know that players are much better than what they are showing in matches. It makes the club's perseverance with them baffling to fans, but it's why the club stuck with Adamson and Madsen, two players almost universally written off by the fanbase before they came good. Which is all to say, have some humility when piping up about players. We don't know enough. | | | |
| Whats it all about Alfie? on 10:20 - Sep 20 with 1239 views | Watford_Ranger | The classic conundrum of 4-4-2/4-2-3-1 and who benefits from which or some variant of but I think he and Burrell are better off with each other or Kone (when vaguely capable). Cardiff weren’t great but they were a real handful together. Really feel when possible it should 4-4-2 with Edwards in midfield for the best balance of everything. | | | |

I will take Jimmy's error, he is probably hurting this morning, but the bloke is a proper player for us and massive to the Team - a Ranger. Top bloke too. As for Lloyd, I got a lot of time for the lad but he should have scored the header, for sure. Not sure that he will ever have enough to play Championship football as a regular but not someone whom I would give grief to. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

| Whats it all about Alfie? on 01:56 - Sep 20 by Hoopsie | Alright, there is no need to slate Lloyd who is our player. You can call out his miss chances, but at this moment in time most of our players are misfiring, no one can ignore the fact we are one of the championship side with the most shots, touches in the box but with a poor conversion rate and the least goal scored amongst the top 6 (on par with WBA). Now to compare him to a canine is not just unhelpful but demeaning and degrading, even if you have a pure intention and mean no malice, but in a Lloyd “bashing” thread the irony is not lost, you should choose your words and convey what you mean with thoughtfulness. No need to use an animal for comparison, Lloyd is our player! So in a nutshell, Lloyd - is all about running and boundless enthusiasm with no end product - got into good positions and scoring chances but always missed - is never better than Kolli although the latter doesn’t play and/or train well (I know this thread does not bring out Kolli but we know the OP agenda) - played 70 games scoring a few goals with 4% (sic) conversion rate and is the last striker you would bring on if chasing a game, even behind a “player” who never in the squad or I dare say, a much less sighted Obikwu - had lots of play time but never a championship level player, at least not now (for some is never) So we need a striker that has Burrell’s pace, Kolli’s shooting ability, Lloyd’s work rate Kone’s hold up play and Obikwu’s legendary abilities yet to be determined. So I say, we do need another striker* [Post edited 20 Sep 2:04]

This is a really good point and I dearly hope that JS is aware of it and addressing it in training. All told, we had 33 shots yesterday, but only 7 on target. A great comeback, absolutely, but that is a sobering stat.

| Whats it all about Alfie? on 08:04 - Sep 20 by GaryBannister86 | Valid point, I know we piled it on second half but actually both times we scored galvanised Preston into looking dangerous. Didn't Charles make a very good save on to the bar at 2-1? To say we would have won the game if Alfie had scored is really not a statement of fact. Reading the board this morning has just about blown my mind, just shows how differently we can all see it: > Stick for Alfie, thought he really gave everything when he came on. His header was unfathomable in that it seemed impossible to stay out, but that happens with all strikers. Kept going straight after and only an incredible save denied him. Really useful sub to have. > Learning that Jimmy got abuse from some at the Lower Loft; I did see him looking over there at one point but never in a million years did I think "fans" would give this man stick. As Clive's piece earlier this week said, he's a man worthy to be mentioned in the same breath as Alan McDonald for his passion, consistency and performances. And I would never say that lightly. Seeing him making apology gestures to the fans at the end of the game, everyone then (thank goodness) was telling him no need, Jimmy, and sung his name. You had one stinker mate, in a heck of a lot of games. It happens. > Reading some people think it was points lost or that we should concentrate on the first half for the bigger picture. Of course there is merit in saying the first half was a huge worry and that a point against Preston is two points dropped, but....I don't really get that overall view. It was a pretty bizarre set of circumstances, your most reliable player having a blunder after 20 seconds, then a whole host of in-form players suddenly forgetting they were professional footballers (see Kamara), then Cirkin having a brain meltdown and giving the ref the chance to be the star....I mean it was pretty odd stuff. I thought at one stage just write it off as one collective bad day, gonna happen on occasions. But to fight back into the game (with only ten men, seems to get forgotten that sometimes) and for Smyth to have the composure and skill to keep that shot down - and the celebrations when it went in, well if that doesn't go down in the top moments of supporting Rangers, what exactly is the point? I feel like some get more excited with selling Eze for £15m cos it may improve the long-term balance sheet than enjoying the actual frigging moments that are memorable on the actual pitch. > Praise for Saito. From where I was standing I thought he was painfully weak, ineffective and frustrating, still a shadow of the player we know he can be. Totally understood why young Leon was hooked but thought he had a very promising first half. But, I know others see it very differently. That's fine, apart from abusing Sir Jimmy Dunne. Great Post G .... Yes felt the same, that first half was pretty much football meltdown... we lost Vale in the warm up... for some inexplicable reason was replaced by Varane... Kamara move to the false 10... a goal down in 20 seconds... a sending off in 15 and 2 down by 25.... it was the stuff of nightmares.... And rightly, myself included, I gave them.pelters at half time... but that second half was nothing short of inspirational... a team that was so bad ... could produce that is nothing short of incredible But this is about Alfie... in s lot of ways he reminds me, of Micky Leach... everyone then wanted him to be another Rodney and that was impossible... but he gave his all and was a true QPR servant Alfie is a lovable lad, I really hope he can come good, but he does need to score, he is after all a striker... | | | |

That's an interesting comparison with Mick Leach. It would be great to see Lloyd follow in his footsteps but without being the boo boys' target that Mick was in his earlier days. So far the fans have been patient with Lloyd, as we see in this thread. But he's going to need to produce in front of goal soon enough or that patience will begin to wear thin.

Absolutely right about taking both ‘errors” - my point was they were both as damaging as each other but Lloyd was extremely unlucky with his shot on the turn but the good thing about him is that he doesn’t hide even after messing up and I think he has made a difference when he has been on the pitch.

Re comments about abuse to Jimmy Dunne. I was behind the blokes they didn't abuse him they got his attention during a break in play. At least Kolli does score when presented with a chance.. With regards to the headed miss, I think everyone agrees it was harder to miss than score - but the skill from Lloyd on the second chance was amazing. The shot was good as well, but it was an incredible save from an annoyingly good keeper. On Lloyd's future, I'm happy to have him in the squad and he's a pain to defenders when he comes on. However, I think we need to reassess how we see him - he's a striker not a goalscorer. When he does score again I'm sure it'll give him confidence but we shouldn't then expect he's going to morph into a 10 goal a season striker. However, he does help us get up the pitch and stretch teams

I think I know what you mean by Lloyd being a striker not a goal scorer but in the final analysis, that won't do. It would be the same as having a keeper who's not a shot stopper. I really want Alfie to do well, but he has to improve in front of goal or he's not going to make it with us.

I know what you mean mate. I'd rather our strikers score goals as well - I just meant that we shouldn't expect more from him than a lot of effort and running the lines
