Gave up on it as well. Very interesting plot idea but soon became completely implausible and often made the mistake that a lot of American TV/films make - that we as viewers will automatically see the U.S. as the good guys and the naughty Arabs as the bad. We're capable of nuance and moral relativism. |
This is the reason I haven't even bothered with it. Those kind of assumptions get even more tedious when you're surrounded by them all day every day. Plus the adds over here were the flag happiest things you'd ever see. |  | |  |

I don't think it does portray the US as the good guys at all. Certainly the main characters yes, doing their jobs but it also shows US government corruption cover ups and blundered drone attacks on civilians and why some radicals hate the US so it's up to you who you want to see as the good and the bad. I don't think you have to make an assumption based on sides anyway as you can just watch the struggles and enjoy the ride.
Escapism at the end of the day and we all need some of that from time to time. If it was realistic it'd be f*cking boring. |  | | |

The nearest they got to nuance (at least in the season and a half I watched - maybe it's changed since) was that some of the good guys didn't like the other good guys and didn't let them do their heroic jobs properly, but you better believe all of the bad guys were really, really bad.

That's an interesting point although I'm glad I can just wipe out the moral realism and just enjoy a quality piece of entertainment with some fine acting IMO. Manday Pantinkin for example as Saul, superb.

I can block a lot of stuff out, too, and I watch some awful tripe!
I think The Wire and The West Wing are the best programmes I've ever seen. I've watched them both countless times. Recently really liked The Newsroom and the US version of The House of Cards (the English one, too), though neither are in the same category.
Comedies - Seinfeld, Frasier, Cheers, Python. Can't think of a modern comedy that belongs in the same company.
Movies: Best films I've watched lately are the Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight trilogy. Very highly recommended if anyone hasn't seen them. Others - Big Sleep, Shawshank, Casablanca, The Big Lebowski, Maltese Falcon, North by Northwest, Godfathers 1 and 2, When Harry met Sally, Life is Beautiful, The Lives of Others, Life of Brian, The Sting, Lawrence of Arabia, The Deer Hunter etc etc
btw This weekend's episode of Educating Yorkshire was unreal, must watch the rest of the episodes. | |

The single biggest issue I have with the whole show is this:
Brody's wife, Jess, is absolutely bloody stunning. Why would you leave her? Why would you have an affair with Carrie (alright but not in Jess' league). In fact, if you came home from the Middle East to her, with any intention of being a terrorist, surely you'd just renounce your intentiones, praise Allah and tuck in?!
It's absolutely mystifying that the most attractive female in the whole bloody show plays a character where her beauty is routinely overloooked! I can't get my head around it. |  | | |

Apparently they made the pilot with the (Scottish) actress who played Lydia in Breaking Bad, then the network bosses decided she wasn't glamorous enough and remade it with the current one.
