Anyone watch homeland? on 09:29 - Oct 29 by BrianMcCarthy | Gave up on it as well. Very interesting plot idea but soon became completely implausible and often made the mistake that a lot of American TV/films make - that we as viewers will automatically see the U.S. as the good guys and the naughty Arabs as the bad. We're capable of nuance and moral relativism. |
This is the reason I haven't even bothered with it. Those kind of assumptions get even more tedious when you're surrounded by them all day every day. Plus the adds over here were the flag happiest things you'd ever see.
Anyone watch homeland? on 12:37 - Oct 29 with 1541 views | Toast_R | I don't think it does portray the US as the good guys at all. Certainly the main characters yes, doing their jobs but it also shows US government corruption cover ups and blundered drone attacks on civilians and why some radicals hate the US so it's up to you who you want to see as the good and the bad. I don't think you have to make an assumption based on sides anyway as you can just watch the struggles and enjoy the ride. Escapism at the end of the day and we all need some of that from time to time. If it was realistic it'd be f*cking boring.

I think it's still good versus evil, Toast. The nearest they got to nuance (at least in the season and a half I watched - maybe it's changed since) was that some of the good guys didn't like the other good guys and didn't let them do their heroic jobs properly, but you better believe all of the bad guys were really, really bad. The soaring increase in the militarism of U.S. citizens in my lifetime and the flag-waving and fly-overs that go with it is truly dangerous. Programmes like this are escapism, as you rightly say, and for a while it looked as if they might have a bit of a twist on the usual cowboys versus indians plots, but they couldn't hold it, and to me the programme now looks like countless others that wave the flags, fill the collection buckets, lengthen the army sign-up queues and boost the coffin trade all over the world.

That's an interesting point although I'm glad I can just wipe out the moral realism and just enjoy a quality piece of entertainment with some fine acting IMO. Manday Pantinkin for example as Saul, superb. Some come on the Brian, I've read your take on this show and you've pulled it apart and that of Broadwalk Empire earlier on, so tell me, are there shows or movies that do float your boat and for what reason?
Anyone watch homeland? on 13:53 - Oct 29 with 1492 views | derbyhoop | Watched Series 1 and 2 avidly. Seen the first 2 episodes of Series 3 and it's got all the makings of becoming more and more ridiculous. It was threatening to do that towards the end of Series 2.

You need to watch the fourth episode where it re-ignites. It has been a slow starter in all 3 series so far a bit like Roast Beef before the desert.

I can block a lot of stuff out, too, and I watch some awful tripe! I think The Wire and The West Wing are the best programmes I've ever seen. I've watched them both countless times. Recently really liked The Newsroom and the US version of The House of Cards (the English one, too), though neither are in the same category. Comedies - Seinfeld, Frasier, Cheers, Python. Can't think of a modern comedy that belongs in the same company. Movies: Best films I've watched lately are the Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight trilogy. Very highly recommended if anyone hasn't seen them. Others - Big Sleep, Shawshank, Casablanca, The Big Lebowski, Maltese Falcon, North by Northwest, Godfathers 1 and 2, When Harry met Sally, Life is Beautiful, The Lives of Others, Life of Brian, The Sting, Lawrence of Arabia, The Deer Hunter etc etc btw This weekend's episode of Educating Yorkshire was unreal, must watch the rest of the episodes.

Anyone watch homeland? on 14:48 - Oct 31 with 1367 views | Hunterhoop | The single biggest issue I have with the whole show is this: Brody's wife, Jess, is absolutely bloody stunning. Why would you leave her? Why would you have an affair with Carrie (alright but not in Jess' league). In fact, if you came home from the Middle East to her, with any intention of being a terrorist, surely you'd just renounce your intentiones, praise Allah and tuck in?! It's absolutely mystifying that the most attractive female in the whole bloody show plays a character where her beauty is routinely overloooked! I can't get my head around it.

Apparently they made the pilot with the (Scottish) actress who played Lydia in Breaking Bad, then the network bosses decided she wasn't glamorous enough and remade it with the current one. You choose or

Anyone watch homeland? on 21:25 - Oct 31 with 1292 views | Kiwi76 | We're being spared the delights of series 3 down here for some reason as huge hype that we were getting previous one "hours behind the US". Some funny blogs on annoying Dana and how Clare Danes keeps winning best actress is beyond me as the face pulling is pretty much a parody now. Has Brody's mate moved in with his missus yet - can't remember his name probably Cpt Mike?

She is gorgeous (she had a guest spot in The Good Wife where she played an ex-porn actress who hooks up with a prissy wife-killer billionaire) but don't write off Carrie: 'mad-woman' sex has a lot going for it. Series three has stuttered a bit since the two leads are completely separated (Damien Lewis wasn't even in the last ep I saw) but the Carrie thread taken off nicely.

I'm gutted season 2 of The Newsroom has finished, both seasons have been quality so far. Looking forward to Boardwalk and season 2 of The Following.

I don't mind Newsroom but it really polarises folks with plenty really hating it with a passion. Has Olivia Munn in it....
Anyone watch homeland? on 10:23 - Nov 1 with 1226 views | Juzzie | ** spoiler alert ** don't read on if you haven't seen the latest episodes. I watched episodes 3 and 4 back-to-back last night and actully thought it was quite good when at the end it transpired the whole character assaination and incarciration in a medical facility of Carrie was deliberate to flush out whatshisname. I didn't see that one coming. The young lady helping out Brody was quite nice too. [Post edited 1 Nov 2013 10:29]

I can't take Masters of Sex seriously. Every time I see Michael Sheen, I think of either Brian Clough - expecting to see him signing up John Hinton and John O'Hare as surrogates - or, worse, Kenneth Williams, screaming "It's disgusting!" as Hattie Jacques bears down on him.

She also featured in Joss Whedon's "Firefly" sci-fi thing about 10 years ago playing a kind of inter galactic high-class hooker and was staggeringly hot in that as well.
