We feature again Saturday as we visit Cambridge as Div 2 leaders (79/80).
This proved to be Stan's last goal for QPR (a right foot cracker)
(Sorry for the 41 year old spoiler)

I'm finishing up on the 76/77 season - just watched an April edition which showed photos of Stan in hospital after an op on his double leg fracture.

Probably explains to some extent why we weren't as successful that season, after finishing runners up in 75/76.

It had something to with it as he missed 16 games and the last two months of the season but I'd say a bigger factor that season was being without Gerry Francis until February and him breaking down again after 4 or 5 games and only managing 11 league games that season.

Dave Sexton unsuccessfully tried to make do and mend until Gerry was fit. Mick Leach and Eddie Kelly were decent squad players that could step in and do a decent one off job occasionally but that season they were being asked to regularly fill Gerry's boots and that was beyond them.

What Dave Sexton should have done when they realised the extent of Gerry's injury was sign Alan Ball to fill Gerry's shoes. He was out of favour with Terry Neill at Arsenal that season and eventually left in December. He would have been a great replacement.

It was broken in a 1-0 defeat to Bristol city in March. My first and so far, last visit to Ashton gate. The police led us on a route March from the station to the ground. We went past loads of pubs full of brizzle fans goading us,knowing that there was a line of police between us and them. And I got trodden on by a police horse trying to keep the fans apart.
We finally got in to the open terrace, which was split down the middle by a fence. That didn’t stop them throwing all sorts of crap at us,including at least one pool ball.
The long walk back was made all the worse because of the 1-0 loss.

It has probably changed for the better, but I’ve never been back since.

Cheers, I didn't realise Gerry missed so much of that season.

Good point re Ball, Southampton got him but he would have been a decent addition.

A couple of other things I've noticed in games:

- Loads of other clubs' fans would sing You'll Never Walk Alone. These days I don't think anyone other than Liverpool fans sing it?
- Whatever happened to chanting the scoreline to the tune of Amazing Grace? Even at school I remember singing that at the end of break when the playground match had finished.

Very disturbing seeing Stans leg broken at Ashton gate. Same seeing Busbys at Fulham. Those images stick in the memory.

Half time at the tea kiosk at Bristol city was chaos. Police horses charging us down. Agree about escort to the ground, very hairy.

Yeah Gerry picked up the injury in June 1976 in England's first qualifier for the 1978 World Cup on a hard, bumpy pitch in Finland.

I think he saw legions of doctors and specialists but nobody could really diagnose the problem. It was only when he was later recommended to an osteopath and a trapped sciatic nerve was diagnosed and fixed in a couple of weeks. By then though he'd pretty much missed three quarters of each of the previous two seasons after numerous breakdowns.

Few Rangers in the pub where you had the river on the other side. No problems with the bar staff or City fans, though they did go out to shout at the escort when you walked by, then come back in all nice again!

A sheltered 14 yr old growing up in Pinner, hairy for me :)

I remember at school that year and the following ones there were 3 of us supporting Rangers who all went home and away pretty regularly. Dont recall anyone else at my school going to games regularly apart from a Fulham fan and few Arsenal home but not away.

The joys of getting the football specials to away games. No chance of sneaking away for a crafty pint in those days.I was only 17 though so I probably wouldn’t get served anyway.

I’ve mentioned about us singing ynwa before.God knows why we sang it,but we did.The 2nd bit was sung with us clapping rather than just the normal liverpool way.I think blowing bubbles was also sung by fans other than West Ham.
Also sung at a lot of away games outside London was “Maybe it’s because I’m a Londoner.”

I think singing ynwa was a scarf held aloft thing. Bloody hell how many scarfs were being worn back then. Some wearing 1/2/3/4 one on each wrist and the one down the leg etc.

Remember singing this after beating Arsenal 2-0 at Highbury after being promoted under Venables.
Just checked it was February 1984. We were an excellent team and I thought it would go on forever.
I was only 13.

What a goal by Stan, his last in the hoops.

This game was the start of what seems our annual slump in December. From the Cambridge game we picked up just two points from the next fourteen which saw us fall out of the promotion reckoning and we never got near to it the rest of that season.

One thing I've noticed from watching these old Big Match programmes is how poor floodlighting was at grounds, particularly non first division grounds, back then. Cambridge's floodlights looked like they were being powered by domestic 60 watt bulbs. White Hart Lane in today's programme looked like it had decent lights though unlike Cambridge.

I suppose at the time it was normal and television didn't require lights to be any particular strength when they televised a game unlike today.

The first mob of Scottish casuals, Aberdeen I believe, called their sartorial nemeses, the tartan-clad multi-scarfed bedecked fans, Christmas Trees.

before the game a few of us were in a pub just down from that park across the road from the ground at that game.
the city fans were fine, but the atmosphere did'nt feel right, they were disappearing one by one , until we all left the pub at about 20 minutes before ko, big ambush outside.
very similar to when we played yeovil in the fa cup back in 1988....that was something else, worse trouble i've seen and been present in a pub follwing qpr.

I never got asked for ID ever and I started drinking in pubs the week I left school aged 16 and 1 month, thought that was quite a recent thing.

The modern / contemporary style pub, at the road junction? That was always the one to avoid.
