Exactly that. We haven’t changed how we build up from the back, we knock it around between the back three waiting for the right ball. The issue is then when we have come out from the back to go towards the left.

It wasn’t an issue that was much discussed when we collected 24 points in 10 games, but as noted, it was pointed out at the time.

There wasn’t much call for Moss to be left out during that run even though it was obvious how it was restricting how we play.

Its an issue when the results and the points dry up, you didnt say we've changed how we build up from the back, you stated we play the same, we dont because the chosen personnel make it impossible to play the same, as a result the balls not moving forwards from the back anywhere near as frequently nor at the correct pace.

Bingo. Nail on head moment. Seems obvious to me. There just weren't the options available to the centre backs today because both wing backs were too defensively minded despite at times being in advanced areas of the pitch only to pass backwards when they got the ball.

It’s an oversimplification of things but I think with a fully fit Gilmour, Beckwith and TAR we’re more than a match for anyone. Right now we are in a patch where we’re probably playing like a team 6–8th with some very good players but a few weaknesses in the side.

If we get to the York game with a chance of promotion then we’d have taken that at the start of the season. The big question for me is whether McNulty rushes back Beckwith, TAR and to a lesser extent Gilmour to ensure we have as good a chance as that or we do our best to ensure they are ready for the play-offs*.

A stat I’m not privy to but I’m sure the coaches will be is it seems we’re conceding a much higher proportion of goals related to chances than we were earlier in the season. Completely made up figure but it feels that we’ve conceded about 10 of our last 15 shots faces (which isn’t all on Ollie)

*this could be a straw man argument

And it isn’t or wasn’t an issue when we were winning. All I was saying is nothing has changed from when Moss came into the side. As a team we are playing the same way as we have building out slowly from the back, getting up the pitch isn’t an issue.

We are a side that when it reaches wide areas we look to exploit teams inside their full backs/wingbacks. That option is reduced with Moss on the left and so everything shifts back to the right, which limits us playing the way we do.

I’ve always believed it would be an issue that impacts the way we play, both during the phenomenal run when he came into the side and now too. His own performances have been good throughout.

Or did we make them look good…this is a team that had got one point from its last 4 games and is doomed to relegation. If ever there was a banker win it was today.

It's all my fault

After expressing doubts for much of the campaign, i finally began to believe after the recent grabbing of points, especially last weekend, and was therefore confident of victory today

After 20 minutes, even more so. Then suddenly, it was like Tamworth all over again; and Spennymoor; and Southend

I really wish it wasn't, and i hadn't started to gain such confidence in us

As said before, we just need to ensure we're no more than 2pts behind York on the final day

In some respects, that might actually be to our advantage, rather than being the frontrunners

Agreed, that’s limited us for a long while and when we aren’t on it defensively it exposes it even more.

You've admitted yourself with Moss in the side it prevents us playing at the same speed or at least an ability to shift things going forward when going down his side of the pitch, if our plan as you suggest is to exploit their full backs thats 50% of the options gone, im struggling to grasp how that can still equate to 'playing the same' way.

I was actually agreeing with Nordenblue. We can't play the usual way with the two wing backs unwilling (or instructed) to go forward . Instead they appear to be constantly recycling the ball backwards which limits our options and thus alters the way we play. I'm glad you agree with him.

I’ve said as much for two months plus how it limits us. Results were proving me wrong, but the issue of trying to play the way we do with limited options down one side was always going to affect us at some stage.

The sooner we gat Allarakhia and TAR back, the better. Not sure on Hannant at this stage, but he’s possibly not been helped by Gordon going through his worst spell of form for a long time.

Poor defending cost us. Rodney needs time out, he was poor today. Gilmour back is good, we seem to be scared to play in to the centre of the park, that’s not taking anything away from petit, east and Barlow, we just miss HG. Still all to play for, but we need to step up and play with more enthusiasm! Only started playing when Gilmour came on. Goal conceded where poor and they did everything we didn’t… good balls to the back post. We had so many corners and made nothing of them.

Ah well. It's still not over. We all knew it would come down to the match v York and, even being 3 pts in front would not have made a difference. We can even afford to draw one of those games. 2 points behind York but beating them on the last day, how sweet would that be?
Not being front runners might just relieve a bit of pressure, too.
And, in your dreams, York might slip up before then 😃

The worm of time turns not for the cuckoo of circumstance.

In the second half, Gordon was having a go at Hannant for something or other, possibly not playing the ball back to him. Later, Gordon had the new guy in acres of space to his right but instead of playing him in, chose to take his man on the inside and lost the ball when we were in a great position

Hannant visibly wilted and was subbed. Undecided whether he and Moss were under instructions not to take their man on, or just didn't have the confidence to do so. Either way, it limited our options to a huge extent

We've not lost two consecutive league games, so we'll know more about how the squad are able to continue their challenge at the top after Monday

I did see this. It’s not something we have seen much of this season, berating each other isn’t good.
Hannant seems a bit of a volatile character too. The main reason he’s here after upsetting the Oldham lot. I think with all these new signings, there’s probably been a bit too much pressure on them to find their feet and find them fast. JK Gordon was getting some stick in and around me today… chasing a game with high stakes on his home debut must be a nightmare scenario. Everything you do is under the magnifier as me try to scramble something from the game. He was over utilised merely because Moss is not an outlet at all down the other side.

I am absolutely craving a clean sheet on Monday. Not quite at the point of ‘going back to basics’ but we are close. Every attack against us feels like the end result is a goal at the moment. Whatmuff is being tested a lot more in recent months and he certainly has ability but as feared at the beginning of the season also has a lot to learn. Which is why he is here. But again, the margin for error at the moment is so fine, it’s 110% concentration and we seem to be lapsing.

Unless we are going to be 4 points ahead of York after the Braintree game - and that now looks unlikely - I think I'd rather be where we are now or at the most 2 points behind. I really don't fancy our chances if we don't have to win the final game - because we'd piss around with the ball too much until it was too late. I'm sure there will be more twists and turns to come in the next 4.

As mentioned on The RochdaleAFC.com Podcast, our defence in March went from being the best in the league to being very suspect.
It wasn't being addressed. Today, our defending was bottom four calibre.

Morecambe got the win they deserved, but we were so so woeful at the back.

Jim was criticised last season for being slow to learn. This season gave the impression that anomaly had been corrected. Our defensive frailties of late need attention, and fast.
Wholeheartedly agree with those who suggest we need more forward facing momentum. Spoke to a few friends who attend occasionally who were there today and they were so frustrated with our sideways / backwards manner and how ineffectual it was. Apart from two incredibly good goals, and one great save from Mani in the first half, we were wasteful of the time we had on the ball.

A few other thoughts...

Our first home defeat on the new pitch.
Had there been two automatic promotion places in this league, Dale and York would have been automatically promoted today.
We can't finish lower than second.

It ain't over yet. UP THE DALE.

Yes; either i was sat near you (block X Pearl St) or the new Gordon was being berated by several areas of the ground which i too thought was very unfair. At worst, he did okay and certainly no worse than Allarakhia might've done, and looked strong in winning back possession after taking a chance and losing it. Also think those doing the berating were voices not heard so far this season, e.g. part of the extended home "support". It's a perennial issue at these type of games

The offside was against Henderson from Gordon's initial shot/pass. Hard to see on the footage as he's just off camera until the ball gets to him.

If you watch the 'goal', the ref is already signalling for the free-kick as the ball gets to Smith. I commented at the time that the flag was already up before Smith had any involvement.

I think to keep attacking mostly one way, down right, with a cross into the box is making us too obvious. The oppostion set up for this and yesterday morecambe had two big center backs ready, too deal with it and keep an eye on mani

Now gilmore is back, hopefully he can get us playing more down the middle,
bring mani more into it and make us less obvious.
