It's out of our hands now and I think the league is probably gone. Either way we need to quickly improve our performances as they have fallen off a cliff. The way we are playing at the moment I would certainly not have us as favourites for the play offs.

I think to keep attacking mostly one way, down right, with a cross into the box is making us too obvious. The oppostion set up for this and yesterday morecambe had two big center backs ready, too deal with it and keep an eye on mani

Now gilmore is back, hopefully he can get us playing more down the middle,
bring mani more into it and make us less obvious.

We need more from Dieseruvwe too. He had three good chances yesterday, whether he’s restricted by the knock he’s had I’m not sure but has got to offer more of an outlet.

The highlights show again how wasteful we are when getting into good positions. They also illustrate how we’ve become defensively slack. That second goal is particularly bad.

It's ingrained in the Club's DNA.....Big Crowd, Big Big Flop.

The club's DNA is that of a small club within an apathetic town. We have never been able to compete financially until now and, even so, we are punching above our weight this season.

It's been stress inducing watching us struggle over the past month or so but some credit needs to be given to a team on the edge of passing 100 points with 4 games to go.

Firstly you have to give credit to Morecambe and Bentley for the way they played, they played with a team with nothing to lose.

The first thirty minutes we played well, without creating much, but our style is to pedestrian, we seem to keep the same style of passing sideways, looking for gaps and teams know this, they just sit back and counter attack with purpose, we also tend to score and sit back in games. Yes, we are have reached 98 points with this style, yet as others have pointed out, Mcnulty as not learned to be flexible in his tactics and I feel this will cost us this season. I have accepted that we will be in the playoffs now, but am concerned we will bugger up once again. I hope I am wrong and go into the York game knowing a win will take us up.

Yet we lost yesterday not because of how we play with the ball, but how we defend without it. We should have scored four ourselves, yet conceded the same amount.

What would the possible solutions be to that?

Edit: Actually, if we had scored and sat back (we didn’t), we might have seen the game out better. We get exposed because of how attacking our formation is and individuals not doing their jobs.

How have we got to 98 points over 42 games without being flexible when the situation calls for it?

Sometimes you just don't play well and the opponents are better.

As 442 says, the game yesterday was decided in both boxes. Look at how well Morecambe blocked our efforts late on, for example, compared to the ease with which they scored their goals.

It’s taken me years to understand that football isn’t everything, so I was able to enjoy my Friday evening.
We were good in the first third of the game and deserved to be leading. The concern for me now is we had the majority of the possession but still conceded more than enough. I thought the answer was the possession battle, but clearly not. Since the Brackley game the play without the ball hasn’t yielded the results it used too. BJ spoke about it after the game but we have had plenty of games to sort it out and haven’t found the solution yet. If we do find it a four match winning run is more than possible.
Perry would be my nominee for YPOTS, but he has been a regular throughout our busiest period of games and is still only 21. That’s a question mark for me.
I will always be glass half full man, so really looking forward to the imminent winning run.

Yes, he had the opportunity to place it beyond the keeper's reach

I was fully expecting us to equalise late on, which would've kept us ahead of York

We're not done yet, but do we have enough ruthlessness to actually go for it? We're a really good team, our record speaks for itself. My concern all along was being too "nice" and that hasn't changed. Morecambe under Bentley aren't "nice" and they embarrassed us yesterday

Edit: just seen the Tyler Smith chance again on the highlights, and it was more difficult than it looked in real time

Bentley’s done well at Morecambe. Another example of a manager suited to a particular club - like Hill and Coleman - it’s a shame his Dale sides were totally devoid of any togetherness.

We just need to find our confidence again, the players who were so totally assured in their own performances are the ones having a dip in form. Especially defensively. We’ve fallen short all season in attacking areas, despite the 83 goals scored, that’s something everyone agrees on I think.

Right now there are some similarities to the first promotion under Hill. Then we’d as good as won promotion by the middle of March and the aim was the title. This time we’ve always going to finish top two and the pressure has been on to win the title for a couple of months. Our own form far outstripping start of season predictions has raised expectation.

In 2010 we imploded spectacularly, a side full of excellent players fell apart. We’ve not exactly fallen apart this time, but the margins are so fine that a couple of bad results could see the season peter out as it did then. Only with another challenge in the playoffs to come.

We can’t underestimate the impact the injuries to rowling, gimour and to some extent prichard have had.

Just over a month ago we were on the back of seven straight wins beating 4 of the teams in the playoffs. Then the injuries hit, and probably some fatigue.

We lost gilmour and rowling around the Halifax game and since then we have conceded 15 goals. We have dominated in most of the games we have played in, but what has changed is when we have lost the ball we have let team hurt us. The second goal yesterday is perfect examples of. We lose the ball in midfield to a half hearted challenge, there winger beats two players without a challenge and crosses it to the scorer who has run unchecked into the box. He passes Barlow who just lets him go.

We need to get injured players back. the amount of work that gilmour and Rowling do defensively is missed badly. Also others need to start doing the basics.

We are not suddenly a bad team. We just need to get back to what we were doing so well just over a month ago.

Who knows being second may take some of the pressure off.

Think this sums up the issues recently perfectly. There’s nothing fundamentally wrong, it would only undermine the culture that’s been created for anyone at the club to think otherwise, it’s about the basics and some individual players either those playing or those missing.

One “positive” about yesterday was we created so much more and were a much bigger threat than at Sutton.

Anyone watching both games in isolation would find the performance last week far more concerning than what we saw yesterday. Also, it would have been a bloody game for the neutral if there were any!

I firmly believe a team with Rowling and Gilmour in makes us stronger defensively and we are more than a match for all but York.

No coincidence that the drop in gordons form has come at the same time as rowling being out, and East and Gilmour are still a better midfield defensively.

We are still dominating possession and and creating chances. What we are not doing is limiting the opposition like we were.

Get those players back and this season is far from over. We havent got 98 points by luck.

A lot of that echoes my thoughts, Rodney scored 20 in all games last season and only has 8 so far.. I am not convinced there is any deep understanding beween him and Mani either. Crosses from the wings are inconsistent too so gambling on where the cross will arrive is difficult.
The post-January fixtures have drained a lot out of the team witnessed by injuries and loss of form. Stamina comes with age as does mental toughness, we have a comparitively young defence possibly unsettled because of changing goalkeepers. Much as I believe Whatmuff is a huge talent, he is not taking charge of his defence like an experienced keeper does. I don't see EEL doing a lot of organising either. I fear the season is going south and we are heading into the playoffs with "what might have been" hanging over us....

Devante Rodney is something of an enigma to me.
Of the 17 league goals he scored last season, 8 came in the final 8 games, 7 of them when Mitchell was on the bench. He was a better player when given the front role. Now he is not the same player when Manni D has the main job. Coincidence? I think he feels responsible for goals alone, even though he can create, and he sometimes is clumsy in trying to manoeuvre into a shooting position. We all know how dangerous he can be.

With 9 corners yesterday before Morecambe scored can`t we try some variety other than East`s and Pettit`s plops into keeper`s zone? We should have been at least 2 up by then.

He wasn’t playing as a central striker at the end of last season either. It was Henderson who was the no.9, covered by Mitchell until Bird returned for the last three games.

Rodney played the same position as he is now with the other wide forward rotating, with Barlow impressing the most though he then had a spell in midfield.

I agree he shows great ability, has scored quality goals and assists. I just wish he was more aggressive like Josh Stones of Carlisle. He seems to play restricted, half-pace a bit stifled or holding back. With his strength he could be manhandling the opposition while in possession, bundle over the ball or give an assist. He still has time in his career to meet his full potential.

We haven't conceded due to a centre mid and a wide player not playing, we're conceding too frequently due to defenders not doing rank basic defending, blocking balls into our own box and schoolboy level tracking your runner and picking up your man in the box, again though too much attention has been put on the 'defenders' to pass the ball like a prime Rio rather than defend like a John Terry.

His play may frustrate but if the occasional joyous power bursts to break defensive lines became regular & he scored 20+ every season he wouldn't be a National League player. Equally frustrating you could say is Mani's current lack of hold up effectiveness or work out of possession - ditto above.

Disappointing as Friday was all in all we weren't as toothless against Morecambe as against Sutton but it's fine margins - we didn't covert good chances in the first 20 mins when we were dominant and we did try to block 2 of Morecambe's goals but the ball went through our defenders legs - it's football
