As an 11 year old I also remember watching that game with my brother. Must admit I was more disappointed yesterday!

I was there against Orient. They were a top class side with several players who either had or would later play at the top level. They actually won the division that season. No disgrace there at all. Just outplayed by a really good side. Newport aren’t anything like that. However the Dale ended the season in 8 th position. |

Yes, the ball came over his shoulder and all he had to do was make any connection but the one he did, which was to try to hit it too hard and ballooned it over the bar
MOTD started a new feature that season, showing brief highlights of a key match from the lower leagues. Luton and Dale were 1st and 2nd in the old Division 3 at the time [Post edited 16 Aug 16:37]

I'd say anyone at the Orient game can't really have been born much earlier than 1965 and most kids of the age can't really remember the fine details, i.e. what the fixture meant in the overall scheme of Dale things

1949 (77) Sadly dont go to games anymore. ( except Spennymore ) Don't remember much about the game . But its not like the good old days if a player got whacked he didn't roll all over the place .
I am not very good at computers managed to download a ticket for Spennymore, got to the turn style i didnt know you had to push the bloody door open , There was quite a que giving me dirty looks, Managed to get in through the office. One of the reasons i wont go again. Still i suppose its progress |  |

That's a fantastic match report, and gives a much better impression of how good we were than from what i can remember about the highlights
Sounded like we were better than them on their own turf, even though they ended up getting promoted
It really was the awful injury to Buck, broken leg in a clash with Reading keeper D'Eath !! which stopped us in our tracks, otherwise we could have found ourselves playing in the second tier with that team. Poignant memories from my youth
Only thing i don't recall is our sub that day: Clarke ? Don't recall him at all. Perhaps someone else does? [Post edited 16 Aug 19:19]

That Dale team played some of the best football I’ve seen at Spotland/Crown Oil Arena. They were real entertainers. Just a little bit of investment and who knows what they could have done. There wasn’t a replacement for Tony Buck when he broke his leg. David Cross was thrown in at the deep end before he was ready.
My wife to be worked with Vince Radcliffe’s wife in the office at TBA so I got know a few of them. Great lads. | | | |

Centre back signed from Liverpool. Think he was only 20 or so.

I was there - it was actually the first time that I'd seen them lose! I still do try to get to a few games a season - but I'm an exile and so I generally see more away games than home ones.

We had already gone off the boil and had slipped down the league a bit by the time Buck had his leg broken by the goalie called Death.
The turning point was Vinny Leech’s career ending injury in December at His former club….you know, the club that no longer exists, Went winless in 7 games after that. | | | |

I think he also played a couple of important games as a stand in for Joe Ashworthwhen Joe was out.
He was set for great things at Portsmouth as a young player but he got a badly broken leg in a Pompey v Southampton derby. After that he moved on to Peterborough. | | | |

Vince Radcliffe was part of the 1969 promotion squad. He was a blonde-haired full-back, but Smith and Ryder kept him on the sidelines. He later emigrated to Perth, Australia where he passed away in 2014.
Paul Clarke was a gangly, dark-haired centre-half who only played a handful of games, as he was cover.
Colin Blant lived in Heywood for a while and was a coach in the Dale's Centre of Excellence in the 90's-00's. Sadly, Colin has become another victim of dementia, probably due to heading the ball. His claim to fame was heading the ball over the stand in the Holt End | | | |
