The performance makes you wonder if the players want to play for the manager, that's how shocking this has been and we're only one game in. A big response is needed next Saturday because this is miles away from where we should be. It's been a shambles throughout pre-season, what seems like a scatter gun approach to recruitment, a bizzare fixture schedule, players signed and injured after a couple of training sessions, players signed who aren't fit, players on honeymoon and not being available. Nearly half a team injured, some seriously. A opening day performance that wouldn't look out of place in the National League North. [Post edited 15 Aug 14:18]

Pre-season was a big disapointment but we had well discussed problems and still have.

That was diabolical, there are no positives whatsoever to come out of that game. We couldn't defend, we couldn't attack, we couldn't pass the ball to another blue shirt. You can say we have injuries fair enough but we didn't even get the basics of football right in any way today.
The biggest worry for me is the amount of goals we're shipping throughout pre-season and the 3 competitive games.

Didn't watch today, only seen us in the second half against Tranmere when we looked okay, pretty much in control of things if a bit weak defensively
I'll therefore reserve judgement until after the Crawley game, whilst taking note of the thoughts of some experienced Dale fans
Losing Jenkins, Hayes, Pettit, Beckwith and others may just have been sufficient to scupper the preseason Watson would've wished for. We all know it was about as far from good prep as the rest of the division might wish upon us
However... we didn't go through the struggles as a fanbase to have a perceived lack of fight from Dale shirts to witness. That. at the very least, has to be seen to never occur again

The spine of the team hasn’t changed. So not fully down to the system. Ebanks, East, Rowling, Gilmour, Rodney and Mani all abysmal. Literally not single one of them come away with any credit.
So Watson and tactics aside. Those guys crafted their bollocks off for near on 50 games last season to be here today. So why has that happened today?
My main observation is we are not fit, fitness gives you the sharp edge and our players are turning like buses and caught on the ball so much. Questions needs to be raised and as others have said the preseason preparation and the parties that have probably been a bit too long are huge factors. We weren’t ready for today. And won’t be ready at all unless we just focus on a performance and worry about results afterwards. |  | | |

Really poor and we find ourselves in a relegation fight already with a goal difference of minus 3. Not very enjoyable at all with no semblance of the attacking football promised.
Nowhere near physical or athletic enough to compete with Newport who look to have improved from last season. We are also too nice. Almost 70% possession but no shots on target mainly because we don't push forward or play in the final third.
Not sure what has happened to Mani as he is a shadow of last season. Don't know where our goals are going to come from as Brown is far from prolific and surely we can not rely on Hendo.
Whilst the keeper is a decent shot stopper he is weak on crosses and domination of the 6 yard box. EEL and Sherring cannot play as a partnership. Gilmour and East were poor today and need support as part of midfield three. Not sure where Wilson fits in. Others are inexperienced at this level.
The transfers/ loans do not look that good based on to-day and we need to rely on players coming back from injury to bolster us.
I think that Watson himself must be struggling as he sees confidence plummet. His philosophy and tactics are not working and don't look as if they will based on pre-season. Hopefully he will review his approach this week. The next two games are important to our survival and the next signing could be a Director of Football.
Without panicking there is plenty for the directors management and players to ponder on if last seasons efforts and gains are not to be wasted.

Funny, but I remember us being as good as them until their opening goal which was allowed to stand despite the referee not blowing for the free kick to be taken. Our defence and goalkeeper were still lining things up.
They were clearly a much better team than we were and went up the following season under Gary Johnson.
I will agree with you that we ran out of steam after half time, and it was ridiculously hot that day. (early 2000's; so you've had to go back almost 25 years to find something not quite as bad as today. At ;least we scored then, which we wouldn't have done if we played another 90 minutes today !!. | | | |

Ian we have a problem! We do not currently have the players to play the system that you want.
We have no 10 and our centre backs are too slow to cover the amount of space required. It would be much better, at least in the short term, until the players get adjusted to play a 433 with a sitting midfielder and one either side. Play with a focal point and then two wide. There is just too much space in the middle of the pitch and without boring people by going too tactical there is no connection between players. When a player gets the ball there is no obvious ball on. The 343 covers the centre of the pitch better than a 424 with a notional 10. It offers more control and there are easier triangles to move and maintain the ball. Our players, especially those who have played a set way for two seasons look lost.
We did not actually get cut much today, but we could against better teams. It was more invited pressure. We gave away too many soft free kicks and did not clear our lines at all. [Post edited 15 Aug 16:04]

Todays defence isnt capable at this level, Ebanks wasn't good enough 3 seasons ago. TAR isnt a defender and I don't know if Bilongo is either. You can't really blame the keeper if his defenders aren't protecting his space and leaving attackers unmarked...
In the cold light of a defeat, its clear we are fielding a patched up team, we have signed players with injuries, we have suffered too many injuries to be simply hard luck. Watson has packed a full preseason in fewer weeks than would be normal especially given that most of the team that finished last season had played around 50 games and the recent weather hasn't made things easier. With hindsight he might regret the intensity somewhat..
The problems will intensify if it isn't much better next week....
Team for next Saturday is becoming Hobsons choice..

Oh dear the only thing that went right for me today was that Sky+ was constantly buffering. Saw about 45 seconds of the game. A blessed relief.
Watched the highlights which was basically Bilongo getting sent off. Listened to the post match interview, worrying. I once worked for a manager who when an issue was raised would say “I’ll deal with that”. Without having a grasp the situation or considered any solutions. Maybe IW is related to him. Got no sense of embarrassment about the performance and, Nothing at all about letting down the travelling fans. That can’t be right.
My refrain in the off season was the need to recruit solid experienced players at the EFL . Today has re enforced that view. How does a team go from a never say die winning mentality to not winning any game so far this season. Some people need to stand up and be counted in the dressing room and on the pitch. Josh Lillis could have a significant role here. If he is willing and allowed to stick his hand up.
Was going to travel up for the return of EFL football to Spotland, but not sure I fancy the journey when currently I have little hope or expectation.

Its a new season in a higher division, every club has had a pre seaaon and every club will start by believing they have a chance, its only at kick off do you realy found out, and this will have been a massive shock to the club.
Not a single positive, the club are on such a high atm, but that will dissapear quickly and the away support will fade, its an expensive hobby and you cant expect fans to witness that sort of performance too often.
So Watsons honeymoon period is over and he need to act very quickley to make the team at least look like they can play.
What we witnessed today was the Dale of 4 or 5 years ago.
It is only one game, but there was nothing to suggest any hopes of a fast forward team who will excite and give everything.
Keeper was miles off and after Whatmuff last season it makes this one look even worse. The CBs were awful, the stupid passibg amongat the back 4 gives false impressions when you read the stats, so much non football being played.
East and Gilmour, have they found their level, today looked too much for them both.
Rodney is just not good enough, awful distribtion and not much else.
Mani looked uninterested and though he was fighting a lost cause, he never actually fought for that cause.
I thought Bilongp first half was our best player.
Second half was so easy for Newport, and though we looked a bit better ww still didnt threaten them.
Things can only get better, has to be the hope, or it could be the longeat season yet. | | | |
