JWP's West Ham bubble may have burst. 10:04 - Mar 19 with 2627 viewsGRIM

As good as Prowsy was for us for many years he is now finding it difficult at West Ham.
After being hooked off at half time against Burnley he's now been benched for the last 2 matches.
His specialist free kicks are no longer working, why.
West Ham have more quality players than we had in Premier Lge so Prowsy has to up his game or end up on the bench.
He's no longer considered by Southgate for England.
What a waste we could have used him this season.

Played as a Defensive Midfielder by our last few managers even though he can’t tackle.
Should be played behind the striker in a ‘Number 10’ position.
But then again, what do I know?
I’ll leave it to the £115k a week managers…

WE MARCH ON

Toward the end of our relegation season it was plain to see that opposition teams handled him differently. They were coached not to give free kicks away near to the eighteen yard area because J W P would probably score. Better to let our players play unobstructed in real time because inevitably the ball ended in their goalkeeper’s hands or row Z of the stand.

Put simply he’s not converting from free kicks because there aren’t that many opportunities for him anymore. That just leaves corners which hardly need a specialist to take do they. Add in the fact that he was always a little one paced and it’s not difficult to see why he currently is not flavour of the month with Moyes.

Playing career wise he would have been better staying at St Mary’s. Money wise he had to move.

He's had ten free kicks from just outside the box for the Hammers & not scored from any, we were expecting him to score every time for us.
It's obviously a confidence thing, & he no longer believes he'll score every time.
Either that or Beckham has put a jinx on him to stop him getting the record number of free kicks scored.

It burst along time ago. Prowsey scored his 17th Premier League free-kick goal in Southampton's win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on 18 February 2023. I wonder if Moyes got him a cake last month with one candle on it.

Looks like all his direct goals before that were lucky, not only dried up but yanked. Good riddance.

J W P has had 40 appearances for West Ham so far this season, so only one opportunity to score a free kick goal every 4 games on average. Rather suggests to me that opposition teams have adjusted their tactics to negate his undoubted dead ball skills.

Asking a player to be at the top of his game all season is difficult. WH also have some returning players and Bowen in particular, when in form, makes the sort of position JWP plays more difficult.

There are those here who have never rated JWP but he'll be back.

I read a article about JWP’s free kicks at about this time last season whilst he was still with us and it was saying that the sheer amount of repetitive practise needed to maintain the absolute precision needed to execute so many dead ball opportunities to the level he was able to achieve had begun to take its toll on him physically. He had been forced to cut back on the amount of free kick practise he could do as it was starting to cause some kind of repetitive strain injury that could keep him out of games. I assume that situation may well not get better or at least could reoccur if he went back to previous practice levels. This could well be a contributory factor to his conversion rate drying up from the opportunities he has had this season. Also agree that opponents have quite likely done their level best not to concede free kicks within his conversion range.

They seem to change to a different style of ball each season, that might make a difference.
Match balls are so light now compared to the old leather balls with a lace in them.
I had many a headache after heading those old wet leather balls.

I think you might well have cracked it. As you rightly say, they keep changing the balls so if this season’s ball behaves in a slightly different way to last season’s ball it could be enough to mean that you have to start again from scratch to learn the new ball’s precise characteristics because if you hit this ball exactly the same way you hit the previous one you’d get a different result. If JWP is no longer able to put in the multiple hours of practise without risking a reoccurrence of the strain injury (groin I think) then his free kicks won’t be anywhere near as deadly as they were.
Know what you mean about the old footballs, even the old Mitre Max from the mid-70’s was like heading a brick. The Multiplex was much easier to play with than the Max but my favourite from the following decade was the Adidas Tango, the World Cup variant was a Rolls Royce of a ball from memory, or at least, what’s left of it after years of heading a Mitre Max! ⚽️🧱⚽️

Some might say "this is a load of balls".
But it's a fact, different balls need different techniques.
I would still like to see Prowsy beat Beckhams record & he's still got plenty of time (& free kicks) to do so.

It's the BBC. What do you expect?

Anyway, sounds like another brilliant match-winning performance from the man.

West Ham have got Bayer Leverkusen next, in the Europa League quarter-final, which could see 2 ex-Saints facing each other: JWP and Tella. They must both really regret not being able to stay her and be coached by Russell, like Smallbone and Adams.

JWP scored the winning goal direct from a corner, no doubt that helped with his man of the match award, VAR then disallowed a Wolves equaliser.

If the BBC want to keep dancing the Wokey Cokey with player of the match instead of man of the match then the next Ashes series will be fun as the acronym I have seen used for the award would morph from MOM into POM. (no, I don’t know why they don’t use the T)

It makes sense because football isn’t just played by men.

But if its a Premier Lge game it's only played by men so why not stick with Man of the Match.
I'm looking forward to the day there's women playing against men in Premier Lge.

Moyes simply has a squad where he can pick players in better form. At Southampton, apart from his early years, JWP was never subject to that pressure. Look at the rest of the WH squad and figure how many have played every game when not injured. Simples.

Adidas have had to stop sales of their new Germany replica shirts for Euro 2024 with the number 44 on the chest or back due to the uncanny resemblence the numbers have to the lightening bolt style insignia of the Nazi Schutzstaffel (SS). Obviously in a different league to MOTM / POTM but surely the easiest thing to do would have been to change the font when this got flagged up?

Indeed it isn't just played by men but I know of a couple of womens leagues that use POTM in preference to MOTM and they prefer it to the direct alterbative WOTM. Not a woke issue with either League, they just prefer how it sounds.
I really don't see the problem with sticking with the tradition of MOTM and leaving POTM for the female players if they / their leagues find it preferable to WOTM or MOTM which is obviously fair enough.
