Steve Cram at the Winter Olympics is appalling. He’s bad enough for athletics but his Curling commentary is toe curling. He can’t shut up and nothing he says is of any interest, as is clear as soon as the experts with him speak.
And he absolutely loves using technical Curling terms as if he’s itk. It’s embarrassing.
The BBC MOTD female commentators Robyn Cowen & Vicki Sparks by a country mile. Literally hit the mute button the second the host says ‘and your commentator is’ just can’t stand either of them.
Co-coms that won’t shut up, half the time they just repeat what the main commentator has just said.
Commentators who have to constantly over exaggerate the pronunciation of foreign names so they sound like they are either bringing up phlegm or choking on a sandwich.

There's so many terrible football presenters / commentators that it would be much easier to name the best one. I just can't tolerate Carragher or Neville who both insist on talking absolute garbage instead of just commenting on the match. Sp glad that I've got a mute button. I'd choose Alan Smith as the best, he only speaks when he's got something constructive to say & he doesn't resort to shouting, he's easy on the ear.

I think Peter Drury might be AI.
Every time someone shoots he shouts their full name. Every single time. And he always tries to get the full name in. And always with a ridiculously excitable intonation.
Once you've noticed it, that's every game he commentates on ruined.
He's the second worst Premier League thing after VAR. God only know how he has become Sky's lead commentator. Unless he's AI, as I say.

I'd agree Matterface is the most irritating. He prepares a list of stats, then when someone scores he shouts (as if he's a fan) but whilst shouting he is listing off stats. It's so weird.
And Morrison. I just can't bear ex players that can't really string a coherent sentence together that get on every show. Surely being a broadcaster requires a level of communication skills?

I rarely watch football on the TV, partly as I have little interest in it, and partly due to the commentators.
Matterface is an arse. ITV should be banned from screening football for sacking the excellent Clive Tydlesley and replacing him with that berk.
Jonathan Pearce is utterly terrible. Has inherited the Motson trait of treating the viewer as if they were a 4 year-old.
Barry Davies was the master. Treated the viewer as a grown-up and more than willing to give a negative opinion with a withering put-down.

Spot on Pat. Barry Davies was a class above the rest. I never understood how the BBC elected to put the man-child Motson on the FA Cup Final ahead of Barry Davies, Motson was not fit to lace his boots.
Have to say I didn’t mind Brian Moore on ITV, in fact I used to watch the build up to the FA Cup Final on the BBC then switch over to ITV for the 1st half as Moore v Motson was no contest, then back to BBC for half time and back again to ITV for the second half so no annoying ads and no annoying Motson sounding like an excitable schoolboy on crack.
Thinking back to the old days of the Big Match highlights show on Sunday about 2pm. Some of the regional commentators were so biased in favour of their local teams. The likes of Hugh Johns & John Helm (ATV & YTV respectively) were amongst the best when it came to commentating through rose tinted specs.
That said one of my favourite World Cup memories was John Helm, a dyed-in-the-wool Yorkshireman & England supporter commentating on Brazil v Scotland, he couldn’t disguise his unbounded joy at seeing Scotland get a right pasting by Brazil describing one goal Zico scored as perfect goalscoring, but he just sounded SO very happy.

Having spent 2 hours watching the curling last night I now have Steve Cram on my list, he knows about as much as me about the game but didn’t shut up, you could tell the ex player co commentator knew he was clueless.

Yes, I thought Brian Moore was really good.
And I liked John Helm.
Gerald Sinstadt was great as well, his commentary of Channon’s goal against Liverpool was class.
Also another mention from me on Clive Tydlesley. I love this commentary of his on Lambert’s goal against Skates in the Cup (we won’t talk about the rest of that game….)
Given that some of the old timers were name checked, I'm surprised Ken Wolstenholme didn't get a look in. By way of coincidence, my mate and I were refreshing each other's memories on terrible football jokes last week. With apologies to those who have heard it before...
A hard of hearing Eastern European historian was watching the '66 match and swore he heard Ken say..
"They think it's the capital of Moldova...

Fully agree on Motson...He routinely reacted to England opening the scoring by saying " I wonder if we have scored too early"...you can't buy that level of insight.
