We had no midfield. Three first choice players missing and three out of position filling in, plus a couple of kids. Question is why the cupboard is so bare.

Correct answer of course. We have been crying out for a quality midfielder sonce it was obvious JdG wasn't coming back. We are fine when Leon, Ki and Shelvey are available, but 1 more seasoned pro in the mix would be nice.

Tiendalli was the only odd choice today. The rest was forced uspon Garry.

As for the op comments of monk being a coward and Ash bottling it?

We didn't do ourselves any favours but that was the most complete performance from an oppo team I've seen since we were promoted.

Who should we blame for having no midfield strength in depth and giving some of the world's best players masses of time and space on the ball?

Serious question, try to be constructive.

Chelsea worked out we play the ball across the front of our own penalty area. They closed us down with men quick and gifted enough to be able to take advantage of this. We just can't play this way against teams like Chelsea.

Why do you need someone to blame? You've said it yourself - "world's best players". Should we be beating them then? At most, realistically, we can afford one more senior CM. Would that have made a big difference today? I doubt it. Bad timing today with people away, suspended and injured. We were thumped by the champions elect - it happens, we move on.

what directions are those then? there's very little a manager can do once they're on the pitch, but the illusion of standing there waving your arms around somehow pleases some

Well most decent managers adapt and change their tactics when things aren't going well.

But according to you after the initial team talk before the game, thats it, if that doesn't work we're f*cked. Which to be honest is pretty close to the truth.

Ah yes - bad timing!

Who could have possibly foreseen our only DM not being able to play every game at 32 years of age, Ki being away for a major tournament and the hothead Shelvey picking up a suspension.
Just as well Gylfi wasn't carrying a knock. Oh hang on...

The point about "some of the world's best players" was that you don't give them the space we did today - regardless of the starting line-up. The manager must take some responsibility for that.

We're a small club. We can only afford a limited number of senior pros in each position. When those are injured/suspended, etc., we have to play the back ups. We're not Man C or Chelsea with full internationals knocking around the club doing nothing.

As I said I'm sure we could make room for one more CM (and we tried in the summer by all accounts). But until then we work with what we've got. Surely no one would seriously suggest we buy two senior pros just to cover ki's month away and Shelvey's ban? What would then happen in 2 weeks when they get back? We have to just ride this out. Maybe we'll get one or two more bodies in before the end of the month if we're lucky.

WTF? Are you serious? Monk should have had some balls and made changes at 3 down, at least. Oliveria was weak in every challenge and indecisive. We had our only good spell of the game just after they scored the first. We then inexplicably allowed them 6, 7, 8 minutes on the ball without us even touching it. We did what we do under Monk we sat back, tried to get into our defensive lines and try to defend without the ball. Marking zones and standing off.

All the while a team like Chelsea were like huh? WTF are you doing Swansea? We'll just pick you off all day like this. In those 6 to 8 minutes they created 4 good chances. Monk was up and about at this point in his technical area like he normally is. When the second and third went in he went into hiding with the rest of the team he'd picked.

We've got to scrap that nonsense on the defensive tactics and pretty sharp. One we're not very good at it and two we're giving the opposition time to get comfortable on the ball when that's what we used to do.

Also blessing in disguise if Williams is out for a few weeks. He's like a mouse out there and shows less and less courage with each passing week.

We haven't played well for a long time. Time to have a serious look at our style of play and let's hope that game doesn't have a real knock on effect from here on.

Do we really have to polarise this into a pro-anti Monk dickfight? Yeah I suppose we do....ok, I'm not really in any camp but I thought that was poor from him today. The team played like a pub team so they must shoulder a lot of the flak but team selection, shape and attitude was poor for me and, whatever you might say about effect, your manager hiding (and he was) because you are getting slaughtered is not a good way to behave at all (he's been very visible in other matches). So the impression it gives is 'you're on your own on this one boys'.

He's also taken a lot of credit ('they're taking on board what we're giving them'; I've worked to improve Bony) now he's got to stand up and take the crap. I hope he does.

But there we are. We were outclassed. I think they'd have been too good for us whatever we did, but that's not the point. It reminded me of what Villareal did to us in the friendly when we tried players out of position, new player combinations and no real gumption. They cut us to pieces too. Maybe this time, some learning might take place because make no mistake, the scummy scrap metal bunch were right, we were sh1t.

We've had one specialist DM (aged 32 last September) since Canas was persona non grata almost a year ago.

Bonkers.

Substitutions, formations, giving players specific roles, getting messages on to the pitch to do certain things...opposition managers do it all the time.

We're lucky if we get like for like subs on 60 minutes.
