We couldn't attract anyone of name and reputation after treating Laudrup badly. If we are interviewing people like Appleton, Mellon etc it looks like the attitude that led to Monk being appointed has regained influence at the club.

Of course we could. We attracted Bielsa, just couldn’t meet his demands.
Premier League clubs are a massive attraction. Relegation and budgetary constraints are stopping us getting top managers, not the fact Jenkins was mean to Laudrup or Guidolin got sacked on his birthday.

How many Championship clubs are considering appointing managers with absolutely no experience of managing in the Championship following 7 consecutive (very recent) seasons in the PL? One... 🙈 I repeat what I said before.., Birch cannot afford to get this one wrong.., Way too much at stake at a critical time in our transition. His spells at Blackpool/Pompey/Blackburn don't look good on paper but as soon as you get into the context of it there's not much he could have done. He went to all of them at the height of the craziness.
I'm not saying this name should excite anyone but he makes sense for a lot of reasons. He's absolutely a better option than any of the bookies favourites without doubt.

We are still in deep, deep trouble financially. We can’t afford managers who will come with proven track record at this level. Even abroad would you up sticks and come to us in our current state?
Potter was at the Noel Gallagher gig in Cardiff the other day, few people I know were talking to him before a few Cardiff kids crowded him giving him stick and he had to move on. We are not in a good place whatsoever.
