| Piers this morning on 11:03 - Apr 16 by Professor | Should have certainly looked at suspending flights from affected areas much sooner. Continued with community testing and contact tracing. Locked down about 10 days sooner. Banned public events much sooner (football did well here in self--closure). Prepared with adequate PPE, testing and ICU spaces. Two of my researcher are now engaged in virus sequencing (at Liverpool) and testing and Milton Keynes. We could and wanted to mobilise weeks ago. All of these were consensus opinion from every scientist I personally know. Boris and Cummings (and their crony Vallance, the CSA) acted to protect business first and listened to an outlier view on Herd Immunity driven by a behavioural scientist. Yet experts linked to WHO still yesterday saying stopping flights does not help! This was in defence of WHO in mid Jan recommending no restrictions on travel from China and saying there was no reason for checks on passengers arriving Days later apparently Germany’s case zero flew in from Shanghai after her parents visited from Wuhan and it started spreading through the cars parts factory where she was working. | | | |

‘In reality, the science around coronavirus is in its infancy and developing daily, with researchers across the world trying to understand how the virus spreads, how the body responds — and how to treat it and control it. ‘ Amen to that and this speed and agility is essential to save lives, many many lives In fairness some on here were saying similar things to what is contained in that article some time ago.

Good on him and he deserves recognition. But not for tasing £12million for the NHS. The funding should be coming from the taxes that corporations and individuals are allowed to evade and by reversing some of the tax breaks for the richest. I genuinely worry these event are masking the nasty truth of underfunding, poor pay and conditions that our key workers endure and the rank incompetence of government. As many are pointing out you don't need to be any expert to identify failings. I would prefer a rise of my 40% tax rate next year to 45%. Would bring in billions and I would lose perhaps £25 each month. |
I disagree. I think a man whose nearly 100 years old doing laps of his garden raising money for the NHS brings into sharp focus the corruption of the Tory government leaving massive corporations pay f*ck all tax, less tan 0.5 percent, who benefit from fit and health consumers (unless big pharma obviously) but don’t contribute anything near what they should. It should lay bare this government enabled billionaire preservation scheme under an intense glaring spotlight and they should be shamed the world over. Maybe this crisis will bury this global capitalist sham for once and all. If it doesn’t then absolutely nothing will.

Well there has to be an independent public inquiry (or inquest) into the whole situation. One where the psychopaths can’t have any influence (like Grenfell) . Saying that the abuse scandal has gone through three or four chairmen and that’s got nowhere. This is a far more open situation and hopefully the truth will come out and any interests working against the public good must be exposed and punished.

100% agree. As you say, the nature of the abuse inquiry' has made it difficult. There has to be proper accountability for this shambles. We should not exceed Italy or Spain in deaths with prior warning and geographical advantage. Yet people are stating the government are doing well.

Any inquiry has to go to the root cause of what happened in China and when and from there who knew what when. If we don't understand how this started we face the distinct probability of more instances.

It can only be because the MSM are not getting the facts out to the public. The fact we wasted the huge advantages of both time and geography is unforgivable. The lack of PPE kit, the flights in, the lack of testing, not knowing how many health professionals have died, choosing not to participate in EU procurement of kit, failing to protect care homes, and locking down too late. On 3 April last year there were 4m tube journeys. This year on 1 April there were 200,000. Only 5% of the usual figure. There is a concerted campaign against Khan from the right wing press. “ I would prefer a rise of my 40% tax rate next year to 45%. Would bring in billions and I would lose perhaps £25 each month.” It doesn’t bring in billions though. We are at about the optimum figure for tax raising on individuals. Taxing multi national corporations properly is the thing which moves the dial. It should be the number one focus. That, and taxing the super rich properly who pay almost no tax.

Well- I am not an economist, but would be symbolic at least. I earn just shy of 80K a year plus little consultancy some years which goes through payroll and subject to PAYE, NI etc. I probably pay a third of my income as tax and pension. I get annoyed by the adverts on the local rugby and cricket grounds (my son's school is in a very posh area) promoting tax avoidance. It seems we need a change in attitude away from the American (the revolution was about tax after all) to the European.

We need a total overhaul of the tax system. At the moment, too much is taken from people like you when you look at the curve, and too little from those who are genuinely wealthy. It’s because it’s easy to target PAYE. It’s people like Branson, Green etc who are the issue. Branson has paid no tax in the UK for years (there was a report just a few days ago after he asked for a bail out of Virgin Atlantic). Green has asked for a bail out doe Arcadia, yet transferred billions to Monaco without any tax. People are talking about the Duke of Westminster giving £12m. He inherited something like £10bn from his father a year or so ago and paid no, or virtually no, inheritance tax. The average Joe in London (with a modest property) pays huge inheritance tax simply due to property prices that they can’t control. The little book shop pays, Amazon does not. The little cafe pays, Starbucks does not. The system is warped against the ‘middle’ and is far too lax at the top,

The issue with large corporations and very rich individuals is that they can move bewteen, there needs to be international co-operation on taxes for tech corporations for example, this is difficult to achieve the EU could not do it. https://www.ft.com/content/75e

The only thing I would point out when looking at other countries, is they are geographically different. The largest city in Germany (Berlin) has only 3.5m people. London has 9m. Birmingham (the conurbation) has close to 3m, Greater Manchester over 2m. The UK has the same population as France and is less than half the size. We have a very concentrated population, largely based in big cities, with a small rural population. Look at Wales, where the population is heavily focused on the Swansea, Cardiff, Newport artery. That’s allowed spread in a different way to that experienced in other countries. When you look at New York, compared to London, our cases are low. That doesn’t detract from the need, as stated, for an independent enquiry. As I suggested the other day, I’d put Lady Hale in charge.
