Vaccine roll out next week on 17:13 - Dec 10 by Lohengrin

All Welsh schools are out from Friday.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-

Common sense has prevailed then. Have the Senedd decided to cancle the Christmas bubble idea yet? They say it's too late but there's this,

https://www.walesonline.co.uk/

Will the Senedd actually go with what experts are saying and tell people not to have a bubble? Or will they blunder on and hope for the best?

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

I didn’t even consider Juniors and Infants. When they made the secondary announcement on the wireless I’d automatically assumed it meant ALL schools?

No, just comprehensives and colleges.

Mad how they can differentiate between the them.

Unless they have one eye on the childcare issue.

I want a mate like Flashberryjacks, who wears a Barnsley jersey with "Swans are my second team" on the back.

That has to be a major consideration, you’re quite right.

An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

Leaving it so late in the day will obviously cause problems. What do schools do if some parents tell them some kids have to come to school?

Will workplaces all be understanding?

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Primary Schools closing now as well.

Apart from those in the area with the highest infection rates in the UK... Neath Port Talbot.

Those that I know have had the first dose haven't had a second appointment yet.

They were told it would be more like 4 weeks.

its the hope that kills you , or maybe the inability of our "leaders"to lead

Wales has vaccinated fewer people for coronavirus than any other part of the UK, relative to its size
Wales has received a population-based share of the available Pfizer coronavirus vaccines but has administered fewer of them

Wales has vaccinated substantially fewer people than other parts of the UK.

Experts believe that widespread vaccination is the only way out of the current crisis and yet the Welsh Government has vaccinated fewer people relative to its population than England, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

The Welsh Government was initially allocated 40,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine as part of its population share of the first delivery of 800,000 of the jabs into the UK.

The Pfizer-BioNtech requires two doses, several weeks apart to reach its full effectiveness.

How does Wales compare to other UK nations?
Wales

Population - 3,152,879

Amount of vaccine doses administered - 22595 (as of December 23, according to the Public Health Wales dashboard)

Percentage of population given a dose - 0.72%

1 in 140 vaccinated

Northern Ireland

Population - 1,893,667

Amount of vaccine doses administered - 25,116 (as of December 23, according to statement from N.I. health department)

Percentage of population given a dose - 1.33%

1 in 75 vaccinated

Scotland

Population - 5,463,300

Amount of vaccine doses administered - 56,676 (as of December 20. UK government figures)

Percentage of population given a dose - 1.03%

1 in 96 vaccinated

England

Population - 56,286,961

Amount of vaccine doses administered - 521,594 (as of December 20. UK government figures)

Percentage of population given a dose - 0.93%

1 in 107.91335 vaccinated

All the above figures come from the UK Government, Welsh Government and Northern Ireland health minister Robin Swann.

Why are they vaccinating so slowly?

Both Vaughan Gething and Mark Drakeford have indicated that the challenges of transporting the Pfizer vaccine have limited their ability to roll it out to care homes.

At the moment only the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine is approved for use in the UK. This vaccine, which is £15 per dose and is said to be 95% effective, is a bit of a nightmare to transport because it has to be stored at such low temperatures (-70C). This makes it hard to roll out in places like rural areas and care homes.

The Welsh Government has indicated that it will be stepping up its vaccination rate when the Oxford vaccine is approved.

This is easier to transport and we have already got a lot more stockpiles of it so that will massively increase the speed of a vaccine roll out. It is only £3 a dose and although its headline effectiveness is only 70%, this is more effective than a flu jab and would be enough to stop the pandemic.

The UK has also ordered 100 million of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, of which millions are already available, compared to 40 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine of which far fewer are available.

But this still begs the question as to why Wales is under performing compared to its neighbours?

According to the Welsh Government it is not an issue of supply.

A Welsh Government spokesman told WalesOnline: “Wales has received its population proportion of the vaccine secured by the UK Government.

“Daily vaccination rates are increasing across Wales and all health boards are preparing for significant expansion in vaccination capacity from the beginning of January.

“We continue to receive a supply of vaccine in sufficient quantities to meet the needs of health board vaccination programmes into 2021.”

One of the reasons it matters that Wales is behind where it could be is that, even after one dose, the Pfizer vaccine offers over 50% efficacy against the virus.

This means that lives could be unnecessarily lost because the roll out was too slow, especially when compared to Northern Ireland.

On December 23 BelfastLive reported that 25,116 vaccine doses have been administered across the country and those receiving the jabs include 8,031 care home residents - more than half of the Northern Ireland care home population - across 348 care homes

If we are falling behind then answers must be provided, if there are sound operational reasons such as logistics etc then we should accept the explanations, but if it’s on account of poor planning at WAG or Health Boards then we should be holding roller to account. If it’s being delayed because some but not all the Health Boards are ready then again they need to be held to account.

There’s so much smoke and mirrors it’s hard to know what’s going on.

so its not an issue of not having stock but the means of delivery , so I wonder have they asked their counterparts just how everyone else is managing to supply sufficient quantities but not us . The majority of care homes I would imagine are in large populated areas with road systems , we're not talking about horse rutted tracks. Indicated isn't the same as a quotation so what are the reasons

Boundy you seem very pleased that Wales is last.

80% of care home residents in Northern Ireland have been vaccinated.

For some reason we can't take it to care homes.

GP's in parts of Gloucestershire have vaccinated all over 80's and have moved to the over 75's. GP's in Wales don't even have supplies.

How WG can mess this up more I don't know.

If its true then its scandalous , no pre planning again seems to be the order of the day just managing the situation on the hoof .
