What a waste of money 20:42 - Dec 21 with 2548 viewsAndy1300

Sending every house a letter explaining what’s all over the tv all day every day.

What’s even more scandalous is that they wasted even more money by putting a welsh version in the envelope.

Straight in the recycling.

And I thought Swansea council was strapped for cash!

Number 1 team in Wales

The majority of people living in Wales are forced to pay for something they don't use or want. Where is the democracy in this.

No issue with them having it just make them pay for the privilege & let the 90% who don’t want it see their taxes used on more important things.

If the cost was a million ( it’s obviously much higher) imagine the additional nurses that would provide for the NHS.

The Welsh Language budget has absolutely no bearing on the NHS budget. No matter how much you would save by scrapping it, not a single penny would go on the NHS. Pointless comparison.

So you reckon if money from the Welsh governments budget was not used in a certain department it couldn't be used in another?

Anyway I am happy for it to stay as long as those who want pay for the privilege.

Tough times ahead & nice to haves need to be scrapped whether you believe so or not.

What'll be your next move, close Welsh medium schools? Outlaw Welsh being spoken in public maybe? Let's scrap Y Ddraig Goch, while we're at it.

Incredible how so many so called proud Welshmen, are intimidated by their own language. Let's dress it up in a mask of cost, because it probably costs each individual pennies in tax per year.

Absolutely hideous.

Who said any of those things? Don't be ridiculous. If people want to learn Welsh that's fine but printing everything bilingually?

Now apparently the Weslh language commissioner estimated the cost of this at 150 million, what's that, about 45 quid for every person in Wales so individually no, not much. But we'retalking about enough money to make a difference elsewhere, a gebuine difference too.

You say it won't be spent on the NHS, ever. Why is that? Does the Senedd not control their own budget? Didn't Drakeford tell bojo off for offering extra money as long as it was spent on the M4 relief road, saying the Senedd will decide where the money is spent, not Westminster?

150 million, if that is even close (though it's possibly too high) it's a lot of extra NHS staff.

What is the situation with employment, do people get ruled out of certain Welsh jobs if they can't speak Welsh?

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

It doesn't work like that.

Anyway, it is enshrined in Welsh Law, so you'll have to find somewhere else to save money from.

Whatever you do, don't read the link below, you'll have a fit reading the first graph

But the second graph puts spending on Welsh language into perspective.

That's the price you pay for living in this fantastic country of ours.

How much do you reckon it costs you personally? You must know if it bothers you that much?

So the price to pay for living in Wales is to live in a dictatorship not a democracy. Senedd elections are in May we will see how that goes.

As for the bilingual costs nobody can give an accurate figure because it is interwoven into other aspects of Welsh politics, but a rough cost is about £150-160M and that is dependent on whether you include S4C or not which costs roughly £85M pa. Incidentally all public money for S4C will come from the licence fee in a couple of years, I wonder how that will go down particularly will the elderly having their free licence withdrawn.

"What is the situation with employment, do people get ruled out of certain Welsh jobs if they can't speak Welsh?"

Yes they do in certain sectors - especially in public bodies. The amount of utterly incompetent people employed simply because they speak Welsh is astonishing, equally astonishing is that they almost certainly don't need to use it to do their job.

The non - Welsh speakers usually get time off to study Welsh too. Ultimately at the tax payers expense. I used to get two hours a week, which would total about 80 hours a year, so basically more than 2 weeks of solid Welsh learning. There were about 16 people in my class.

32 weeks of beginners (there were other, more advanced, classes too) Welsh Learning in one office of about 100 people. An eye watering cost not accounted for in the Welsh Language budget. Ultimately for nothing, except perhaps being able to say "Bore Da" to an incompetent manager Welsh speaking manager.

I knew the answer but I was hoping NJ would answer. It's a massive waste when people are losing their lives because we underfund the NHS, when kids are not getting a good education and when we don't have enough police.

Trying to excuse it as a drop in the ocean is terrible, how many other drops in the ocean are wasted like this?

It's got nothing to do with fear of, or hatred of but everything to do with spending it where it's really needed.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

That is not the fault of Welsh Language, no matter how many times you try to say it.

There is no correlation, whatsoever, between the amount spent on the Welsh language, and that of the NHS. None. Zero. Zip.

Why don't you have a pop at the funding for, I don't know, let's say Art. Or, why don't we look at the savings to be had from within the NHS if it were run correctly? There are a multitude of places that money can be saved from.

Nope. Welsh will still be spoken by families who want to speak it. If you are from a welsh speaking family like me you will carry on conversing in Welsh.

Wales has many needs. Speaking Welsh isn’t.

Wales is by far the poorest area in GB.the fact If ,it is poorer than Burnley then it is not much better than downtown Kolkata.

Scrap the bilingual crap and fund public services with it. God knows, people are dying because of the Welsh NHS .

Judging by some of the utter crap that is passed off as art these days I think we should not only withdraw funding but also demand reperations.

Its all about choice. I have no problem with Welsh medium schools, those who want them can use them. I have nothing against the Welsh language or it being spoken. I am against so much money being spent on something that 90% (my opinion) do not want.

And it’s being forced on that 90%.

As stated previously, give everyone the English version unless they opt in to the welsh version.

Half of the cost gone, think of the saving to the country and the paper

I could bang on about this for hours. The amount of money that is thrown away to socially engineer the language is insane. Most of it is unseen consequences of legislation.

I've come to realise it's an unwinnable argument. It's a game I've got to play. My daughter is in a Welsh medium school so she can get an advantage she'll need if she wants to stay here in the long term. Like everyone else she'll be ticking a box on an application form to say she can speak a language she won't need to and rarely will but it'll give her an advantage.

I remember watching the HTV news one evening in the late nineties, there was an item brought up half-way through the bulletin related to the subsidy S4C were receiving that year.
When the news reader referred to it as £115 million pounds a year, I immediately thought it was just something he'd misread. i was shocked when I looked into it later, and found it to be true. We all know how many people were watching that channel then, how on earth was that justified? and that was 25 years ago, even before the WAG, but still public money.
Who are these Welsh language people? How did a few hundred Welsh militants wield so much power over the rest of the country?

With regard to the £115 million subsidy to S4C in the late nineties,
I remember at that time working out that it was enough public money to provide Sky Sports in every home in Wales. As one gets older, it's quite amazing how your concerns and priorities may change. Nowadays, after some health issues, I would be calculating that it could have payed for six thousand prostate operations, and eight thousand hip replacements.
I doubt that healthcare will be a major factor in the minds of 16 year old voters,

Ours arrived yesterday, not sure it said anything that folk don't already know, unless of course you've just come back from your annual getaway to the moon.
Will many folk get anything from It, probably not, will any actually read more than the first paragraph, doubtful. Should a Welsh version be included, yes absolutely. Was it worth the time and effort, probably not.

No offence meant but if Welsh is on a CV ,it would be of novelty value only as people outside UK see Welsh as a monority language that has no real status as those that speak Welsh have English as first language ,so no real credit given. It would like like speaking Euskadi or Catalan or Occitain. Having Spanish,French, German,Italian ,Portuguese far better .

Just as a matter of interest, where did you get the figure of 10% from when a survey last year found that 891,000 in Wales speak the language, that equates to just under 30% of the population, and rising.

I would like Music made compulsory before Welsh .

Ive said countless times asking questions of Welsh leads to personal threats. It is a language ,no more no less. My dad spoke it,as did his lot .My mum didnt and hated it.

When dad's family moved to Swansea,an English speaking town by 90% ,they spoke English and not Welsh as they were in business and people ,then,in Swansea had little to do with Welsh in everyday life, apart from the Swansea Valley.

Welsh kid need to expand their mind to culture and languages far away from Wales. Looking inwards is no future
