At the time Johnson was bringing England out of lockdown and putting places in lower tiers than when they went into the firebreak. At the time the Welsh rate had been soaring and was the highest in the World and Drakeford acted. Johnson didnt because they had just come out of a months firebreak and at the time he acted the English rates had rocketed because they had found the new variant. |

Thing is he says about hindsight but how many people on here were saying lokdown earlier and for longer? How many were saying the Christmas bubble was a bad idea? We didn't even have all the info. In which case the Senedd cost more Welsh lives than needs be and Gething is using hindsight as an excuse. Bojo, of course, was even worse. He waited 6 weeks after he was advised and still (later on) got the devolved govs to agree to Christmas. It makes you wonder who was persuading him to wait, it wasn't the medical experts. Was Bojo, were any of the politicians swayed by corporate pressure? |
I don't think it's any of the above. I suspect that Johnson isn't much fond of lockdowns, knows that people aren't fond of them either and so is reluctant to implement them, often long past the point where he probably should. There's still a part of him that thinks he'll retain some popularity for it, and in certain circles he's probably not wrong to do so. In any case, a politician who doesn't like imposing restructions on the population, even if it's for their own good, isn't something to be condemed IMO. Plenty of other stuff he's done that you can do that for.
| Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back. |

The thing is Dr W, not liking imposing restrictions is fine but when in a global pandemic polirticians have to be willing to do unpopular things. It's not like they refuse to do unpopular things at other times. Not doing lockdown sooner has cost more lives and that's what Bojo and the others will be remembered for as much as their success with the vaccine, people like Kilkenny will make sure of it. Those certain circles, will they guarantee he wins the next election or will it be the families of the bereaved who have a bigger say?

I think squabbling about which area / country has the lowest death toll at any given moment from this deadly virus is pretty distasteful to be honest. It's a scenario that no one has experienced before and therefore are all scrabbling about to deal with it with none really knowing if introduced measures will be any more effective than those introduced elsewhere. This isn't a competition to crow about weekly or monthly reports that indicate that more decent ordinary people have died in another area or country than your own, and then to be defensive when next weeks reports show that your area has suffered more deaths than elsewhere. Its pretty pathetic really and if I may say rather sad. One thing we do know is that apart from Israel the UK in general appears to have secured more vaccines than most of the rest of the World even though it could well be argued that advance orders on vaccines that might have had to be abandoned as not working was a huge gamble and that there may still well be genuine fears of a lack of testing regime although I'm sure we all understand the rush to produce such vaccines and get them out there. I'm no lover of the Tories or Mr Johnson but at this point in time it does appear that they pulled their finger out and whether by pulling off an enormous gamble through sheer good luck or otherwise at least due to their decisions to secure supplies early the vaccination programme in the UK including Wales appears to be ahead of most of the world. There is no bigger critic than myself of the incompetence of the Labour Party which in my opinion has dragged down Wales for decades but ( not forgetting that many of its senior figures previously were shouting and screaming that we should be part of the EU vaccination procurement programme) even the general incompetence of Drakeford and Co in the usual running of Wales cannot really be held responsible for the effects of this killer virus. As I've mentioned before I had no idea that there were so many virologists and medical experts amongst the contributor base of this forum I had imagined that those posting on here would be the usual mix of plumbers. office workers, warehouse operatives, care workers, mechanics, web designers, shop assistants. engineers etc etc. We truly are fortunate to have found out that the majority of contributors on here are medical experts who can guide us through current and future virus control and other worldwide medical emergencies. I thank you all for coming up with your various solutions and measures to protect myself and my family in between the crowing of who's doing best in the death stakes this week. It is why he failed to introduce the stringent brutal lockdown we needed initially and to full enforce it. To introduce "mandatory" rules without enforcement -and to ay so-was madness, oure and simple. To allow us a "break" at Christmas has cost us thousands of lives and is unforgivable. I'm no Labour man but I could never vote for a man who cannot take the toughest of decisions. And to think he reckons we have common sense

From the article In Wales, First Minister Mark Drakeford announced that the country will be placed under lockdown from midnight. Johnson didnt do this for large parts of England. Drakeford had been pressing for it. Other countries didnt want it and didnt go anywhere as far as Wales. That is why the Wales figure is roughly half of England. Both are coming down but England from a higher position and the lockdown effect is coming later.

Your unquestionably right and we dont often agree. Many of the things that were needed went against Johnson and other Tories belief. They believe in freedoms. In a pandemic that isnt something you can have. We should have lock downed earlier, kept our borders closed and not opened up businesses that were always going to be risky. We should never haver have ignored advice and brought in a 1 metre plus rule in order to make hospitality more profitably. We shouldnt have been encouraging people to go back to work rather than working from home and shouldnt have reopened stadia. It was all wrong but goes against the grain for Johnson who wants to be popular as you say.

Yeah, well done Boris, on making his Tory supporters richer by awarding them massive PP contracts. Feck me we had the "vaccine minister" starting a medical business, rotten to the core the lot of them, all in it for themselves, the sad thing is, most parties are the same, full of their own self interests | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Most of Wales will do shortly as well. Only 1 area of Swansea Landore has more than 2 cases per day over the last week and 18 of the 31 areas have 1 or fewer cases per day. Going in the right direction.

This is very different. PCR testing and genomic sequencing to find and contain the variant. Liverpool was lateral flow testing to reduce cases, this is nowhere near as accurate.
