| Swansea City v Bristol City: Matchday Thread THE AFTERMATH 11:23 - Feb 25 with 17781 views | NotLoyal | English Football Championship Swansea City v Bristol City Saturday 27th February 2021 Kick off 3pm Liberty Stadium TV : SWANS TV RADIO : BBC RADIO WALES & TALK SPORT 2 Match officials KEITH STROUD Jonathan Hunt and Sam Lewis Fourth Official : Scott Tallis It’s good to see Keith from Stroud in charge of this game, he hasn’t got that far to drive and can get a lift back on the Bristol City team coach if he parks up on the M4/M5 junction. Lovely kebab van near there too, think about it Keith, it’s definitely an option pal. Keith from Stroud will probably park up near the kebab van next to the M4/M5 and jump on the Wurzel bus to the Liberty Stroud last officiated a swans game on December 2nd 2020 when Middlesbrough beat the swans 2-1. He booked Grimes and Dhanda that day because he was scared of Neil Warnock. Steve Cooper didn’t bother him that much, but that was before Andy Woolmer went looking for it. We do have information that Stroud is now a bit concerned about this game because he doesn’t like Cooper either. We think, it might not be true, but if it is then it’s almost certainly correct. Stroud was also the ref for the first leg play off against Brentford last year, that night he went a bit nuts, but recovered well enough to drive home. Stroud always kisses the ball and has avoided Covid all season by drinking a litre of turpentine before and after each match Obviously all of us here at Swansea Independent urge you not to drink turpentine, unless you are in Newcastle with Hoddle and Waddle singing their number one classic tune about cleaning paint brushes in the fog. Matches against Bristol City generally close affairs except the 2005 game which the swans won 7-1. The robins manager, Brian Tinnion, sat on the away bench after the game for three days, he was eventually removed by court order. Brian Tin Tin Tinnion no relation to Stephen Tin Tin Duffy, but equally as shit Cardiff City’s main rivals, Bristol City visit the Liberty and will have to drive past Cardiff on the M4 which will of course terrify them, what with this big rivalry between the two clubs that isn’t. This game would have been ear marked for an easy three points a few weeks ago, but much has changed. Nigel Pearson, that throat grabbing box of fun is the newly appointed manager and the Robins as they are known have new orange chests and feathers. New robins manager Nigel ‘the strangler get a grip on yourself ‘ Pearson Bristol City are commonly known as the fans who don’t turn up alongside Cardiff who are the fans who make things up, and East Stirlingshire who are in Scotland. Incredibly the dialect in Bristol is known as Wurzel, we had a look at typical sayings in Wurzel Bristol, and they basically were the same as everywhere else, which almost places them in the ‘making things up’ bracket with Cardiff. They played for both sides Lee Trundle Steve Torpey There are others but I can’t be bothered. Early team news Swansea City Kyle Naughton suffered an injury during the second half against Coventry City. Wayne Routledge is still out as is Liam Cullen. It’s looking like Ryan Bennett won’t make this game either which is a huge blow again for the swans. The swans ( as we know them ) have won eight of their last eleven league games, drawing two and losing only one. The club by all accounts is in crisis. Burzle City The tractor will be somewhat empty as Angela Lansbury is out, as is Alfie Mawson. Weimann is also out and a bloke called O’Dowda. And another bloke called Martin and Dasilva too. Oh, and that Watkins fella. Bristol City won last time out 3-1 at Middlesbrough. They lost the previous seven matches on the bounce. The last time they won was 2-1 against Huddersfield Town in January, yes them. Current League Table More to follow most likely.

Lowe ain't good enough and its not just recently,we always look more attacking when dhanda plays most time like first half yesterday, always tries play through balls behind, done some lovely ones again yesterday in first half always giving an option inside then looking to play again keeping us moving..not sure about his attitude but he's a footballer trying to playand keep it moving and I would be frustrated on times when you play ball go for return and its not there on times. Worse players than who? You’re not suggesting Bristol City had better footballers than us yesterday are you? They had a better manager imo who knew how to change a game, but were down to the bare bones with injuries and had a bench full of u23s

Some of coopers decisions are baffling..we conceded yesterday to bring game to one one and he takes off two attacking minded players for Fulton and an untried arriola

Probably brought on Fulton to try and bring some control and energy back to the midfield which Bristol City had started to control following their tactical changes. And Arriola to provide the fresh legs and attacking intent. And he did that, and his selection would have been justified if he'd scored that sitter of a chance. He maybe untried but what other options were on the bench that would be considered 'tried'? Oli Cooper? Whittaker?

Doesn’t have the ability to react to a situation in a game, we only play one system, and we have worked on it religiously which is why we are normally so organised, but there has never been a Plan B and never will be.

Didn’t see the game my broadband has been so bad. Anyway, I grew up in Bristol therefore most of my closest friends are BC fans. They messaged me and felt the result flattered them, that we are a good side and can see why we are up the top promotion contenders. We are not the type of friends that appease each other after a result. See my rugby messages couple of hours later.

Totally agree, don't change systems to suit,I said this after Brentford game when their system was totally outdoing us by them playing 4411 with their full backs playing high pushing our wing backs deep allowing extra man in midfield for them and he just kept same system,I know we drew but another night could been hammered.other managers will change systems during games to counteract the other team if not working,I like cooper don't get me wrong but like you say if things not working or we getting done in certain areas he won't change it

| Swansea City v Bristol City: Matchday Thread GAME DAY ! on 21:04 - Feb 27 by LittleEnglandJack | They adapted and went from being almost non-existent in the game to being in the game but poor. Can anyone point me to the chance after chance they created 2nd half? Even in the 2nd half, when we created a lot less, we arguably still had the better of the chances. The sum total of their tactical change was that they looked a bit more solid defensively. They still created nothing going forward. Those goals weren't coming. I've had a couple of pints so forgive me for going off on one, but the idea that anything but unforgivable mistakes from our players cost us is bonkers. |
First I have to say "shoud have" never won anything. We should have scored 2 or 3 but we didn't Now LEJ, Unforgivable mistkaes cost us 3 goals but what about our inability to score? What about our manager not racting to the oppo's changes, when the game started to turn Cooper did nothing. Pearson could see Towler was on the brink and took him straight off, there was only 2 minutes to half time. Did indecision cost us too. Like I said, blaming any one person isn't really fair, they all carry the can, Cooper too.

I think it's a fair point, always good to have different approaches and systems up your sleeve. Not sure how or what we'd do with the players we'd have available mind. To add as well though, few examples of when he has changed the formation - boro, derby, Huddersfield away, it actually made things worse. We must have gained considerably more on occasions when Cooper decided to stick than when he did decide to change it up

Unfortunately, Dhanda is a 45min player - never seen him put in a 90min performance. Fulton for him was a no-brainer because we'd started to lose the midfield (Smith would have been another option). You're also being a little unfair to Fulton, who I believe has scored more goals than Dhanda this season.

Well if Dhanda is a 45 min player, play him for 45 mins. He’s a rare thing in this team - a footballer with touch and vision who can make a pass and link well from midfield. I thought he had an excellent first half when we were purring. He faded second half as did a lot of our players. I can’t understand the vitriol he attracts. Our problem yesterday was simple and straightforward - we couldn’t hit a cow’s arse with a banjo. We had nothing up front. Powderpuff attack. And we break at a snail’s pace. Once or twice Bristol attacks broke down and we retrieved the ball in our penalty area. I wanted to see the ball launched upfield to where Lowe should have been on the halfway line staying onside. Instead of that we took 8 to 10 mostly sideways passes to eventually get the ball into their half giving them all the time in the world to get their mass defence organised. Even the top teams, Liverpool and Man City use the long ball when it is on to catch opponents unawares. Lowe has pace - we should try it occasionally. But Dhanda is not a problem. Morris’s departure is looking more unfortunate for us than ever.

There squad was decimated through injury. They were awful. Yeah we should have won, Bidwell, Hourihane, Cabango all missed complete sitters but their manager changed the game at half time and after the goal and we didn’t react.

Are you not going to mention the elements of good fortune in all 3 of their goals? Or at least concede they were down to individual errors, that wouldn't most likely have still occurred had we changed things?

Conor Roberts was unstoppable down the flank which prompted the forced change on half time. They went to a 4-4-2 formation which exposed our midfield, we cannot play Hourihan and Dhanda plus Lowe upfront with Ayew and get away with it. I previously said that i would have started with Jay with Smith and Grimes which would allow Yan or Hourihan the free role as in my honest opinion both are luxury players. The criticism of the coaching team yesterday is why we follow football and have all different opinions but to throw away points yesterday was obvious on the hour.

I'm struggling to sign up to this theory that's developed about Cooper not changing things and how it would have somehow stopped Woodman flapping at a corner or kicking it at their player and the ball deflecting in. Or even how it would somehow have prevented 1 lax pass in midfield and an incredibly unlucky bounce that deceived Guehi? Would these changes that people say Cooper should have made have made prevented BC getting a single corner? They're a professional team in the same division as us. Remember we still made some guilt edged chances in the 2nd half despite BC improving slightly. And god forbid Cooper would have brought on more defensively minded players to try and see the game out. He'd get accused of being turgid then.

We have been stopped from playing with wingbacks the last 2 1/2 games. Hourihann has been a passenger and we have defended most of the match. Ayew is a shadow of the player he was and Lowe is struggling. Leaving grimes in midfiled on his own is a recipe for disaster. Jay and Smith win ball back and allow players freedom to get forward. The substitution changed the game which closed us down and i agree players make mistakes but i still say it was obvious on the hour which way the game was going, and i would rather win ugly than lose.

I don't buy the hype over Dhanda. He looked OK in the first half because they all did. He didn't make anything significant happen. Don't forget - one of those great chances we had in the first half fell to Dhanda. His powderpuff effort was hit straight at the goalkeeper, partly because he'd made the angle more difficult for himself with a poor touch. Curtis said so in his commentary. We can't afford to carry 45min players.

If Cooper had been managing for 10 extra years would that then have prevented Bidwell from missing an open goal, the ref not giving their player a 1st half red, Woodman conceding direct from a corner and Woodman kicking the ball against their striker then?

I agree re Hourihane. We've painted ourselves into a corner with him. He's probably agreed a minimum amount of game time so he's going to play. Apart from scoring goals (which Dhanda doesn't do) and excellent set pieces (which Dhanda also can't do) he doesn't do anything. And I don't mean that in a sarcastic way - he really doesn't. But - he's going to play. Which killer passes did Dhanda try yesterday then? He made one against Coventry inside the fullback for CR to run onto. In all honesty that was a pass any decent midfielder could play. That's all I remember recently.

Give Dhanda the free role in front of midfield of grimes Fulton and Smith, i fancy he will do more than Hourihan and it will bring in our wings. Also give Lowe or Ayew a break as they are in need of a rest and put some much needed pace up front.

Disagree always tries to open things up gave a couple through balls behind their full backs yesterday one or two for Connor and Lowe,he looks to play the risky ball or tries to take a man on..problem with today's game which is a fact is every player has got a statistician noting their every pass every dribble every sprint and so on,and some players would rather give a simple 5 yard pass the easy pass so their stats have an high percentage and look good on paper..but dhanda will try things that others wouldnt [Post edited 28 Feb 2021 17:55]

He hasnt won me over but i dont think he has had a fair run of games for me to agree. I do think he can open up defences with his passing but he is a waste of time along with CH defending. We need to get a result and a solid performance Wed, play our 3 best midfielders with some pace up front and rest Lowe or AA or dare i say both.
