| “We need to rotate” 19:32 - Mar 20 with 13063 views | Dr_Parnassus | Can we stop with that nonsense now please, and realise the fact that we have an incredibly front loaded and lop sided squad. Bidwell looked like a player that had been rotated, no sharpness and no fluidity and about 3 yards off the pace. Whittaker for all his effort has nowhere near the physical attributes to be playing at this level yet, he showed what he could be at times and is going to be a very good player I have no doubt, but he was knocked off the ball every time he was challenged and we gave up possession far too easily. Naughton is not a centre back and what benefits he may give us when we have the ball sadly we lose without it, we were dominated in the air in both boxes. We need to play our best team and accept we will be tired at times, that’s the nature of football when you don’t have a big squad full of quality. Which is something we don’t have despite many pretending otherwise. I am full of praise for the management team and their achievements thus far but one area where I feel disappointed in is I don’t think they have blocked out the noise efficiently enough. To me, it looks like they have allowed desperate opinion to be picked up by journalists and has allowed that to permeate their decision making. This latest game seems to be the epitome of that. It was a disjointed game with what looked like a cobbled together team. Cabango, Lowe and Smith have to start. | |

Whether you accept it or not, fatigue will catch up with you eventually. 3 away games in a week or whatever it was certainly didn't help.

Someone disagreeing is not grounds to cease my opinion which is backed by complete common sense of course. However unlike a select few on here I don’t take a difference of opinion personally. It’s personal insults directed at Swansea players and staff I can’t abide. Those that do take a difference of opinions personally, really need to get over it. |
It's always there according to you, common sense. It's like you think you have the monopoly and nobody else is talking common sense unless they agree with you. Those aerial battles, you can't win what doesn't happen. When we didn't cross from corners there were no aerial battles. When we dominated possession by keeping the ball on the floor, when we got 23 shots in, most of which were blocked, that was much better than in any recent game. The 11 corners happened because of our territorial and possession stats and because shots were blocked ending up with corners. We rotated and we played much better, after Hourihane left the pitch anyway.

Fantastic summary. Preventing aerial battles was obviously the game plan. Ok we lost to a scrappy goal. We hit the post, were denied a penalty (hi Brentford fans), had several shots blocked, miscued when we did open them up and restricted them to very little. Nothing wrong with the game plan or personnel, we were just as unlucky yesterday as we’ve been lucky recently.

I'd complained about performances up til yesterday and even though we lost I am mor happy because we deserved something out of the game and if we keep doing what we dod yesterday we will start getting better results. Not everybody will defend like they did yesterday, not everyone will get the blocks in. Keep going along yesterdays lines and we'll be ok. That means, to me anyway, that we need to drop Hourihane whatever it says in his loan arrangement.

Couldn’t agree with you more. It’s a bit ironic that the two games we’ve played best in recently, Cardiff and Bristol City, we’ve had a fairly even half, we’ve dominated a half and lost both games. We’ll pick up points if we play like that for the rest of the season. It may not be enough to catch Watford, but we’ll win games.

I do think we will see an upturn in performances after the international break. Some players desperate for a rest. All three midfield players will be getting a fortnight off for example, time to recharge the batteries.

But will we keep playing Hourihane? That one decision could be vital to our season. As vital maybe as Ayew not going away to play for his country because he needs a rest too. Ireckon Cooper should have them all in tomorrow for a bonding session, no training, no finger pointing but have a session together having a laugh and relaxing. They all need a few days off then.

Depends how long Hourihane is out for. If he is going to play him then I hope he spends the fortnight coaching a new shape / formation as how we play now won’t work for him or us.

We can’t do surely? I’m sure there would have been some kind of understanding with Villa that he would get games, but carry on as we are and we’ve got an inept midfield. Either find a way to accommodate him, which I don’t think we will, or bench him and bring him on late in games where we are chasing a goal.

Doesn’t matter what the plan was, there was still areal battles - and we lost them. What your point may be is that there was consciously less in this game than others? But that’s not the point. They scored from one and we were denied a dozen goal scoring opportunities from them. We also lost them all over the pitch. The stats are there for you. Naughton had 7 AB’s (Naughton had the most areal battles out of the back 3, looks like he was targeted, it would be interesting to see if that’s a theme in other matches) Bennett had 5 AB’s Guehi had 3 AB’s Roberts had 0 AB’s Bidwell had 4 AB’s Grimes had 4 AB’s Fulton had 3 AB’s Smith had zero AB’s Ayew had 3 AB’s Whittaker had 7 AB’s (winning 1) So over the course of the match (not including subs) we had 36 areal battles. 1 every 2.5 minutes. Of those 36 areal battles we won only 14 of them, that’s 38%. The only goal of the game coming amongst that. I really can’t lay my point out there any more than I have done. You are welcome to disagree but as I said, the stats are there. So again, while there may have been other benefits to playing less physically blessed players, we suffered in the physical side of the game. Which is common sense really isn’t it. I think if he had his time again he would pick a different side, you guys think he picked the right side. Happy to disagree. [Post edited 22 Mar 2021 0:49]

Yes, that’s absolutely the point. I’m confident Cardiff average more than 36 aerial battles per game. It’s what they do. We were never going to compete with them there, so set out keep the ball on the floor. We were never going to manage to limit it to zero aerial battles and were always going to win less of them than they were. We had 75% possession and didn’t concede a corner. Most of our corners we took short, We lost because we hit the post, had a penalty for handball not given and wasted a couple of excellent chances. Your tactic was to play Cabango instead of Naughton, making us more physical and reducing the ball players we had in our team. Lowe instead of Whittaker so we could hold the ball up more, when they allowed us to camp in their half anyway, and have less shots. Cooper wanted to play to our strengths and negate theirs, you wanted to match us up as much as possible at their own game.

It may be your point but it’s not mine. My point is what areal balls there were (and there were more than enough of them) we were dominated, their goal being one of them - which was always going to be their most likely avenue for a goal and not to mention countless chances that we weren’t able to then put into the box because of it, also probably our most likely source of a goal too. You think it was worth it because Naughton could start some plays from the back and Morgan could take pot shots at goal... I don’t. I think Cabango is more than capable of starting attacks by passing wide. I happen to think we could have played the game exactly the same way but carried a threat in both boxes.... You don’t. It’s that simple. I don’t think we are going to agree. [Post edited 22 Mar 2021 7:03]

Point utterly an completely, or just ognored. Your opinion is just that and you are entitled to one. The point was that you seem to believe what you are saying is always common sense and therefore right. One aerial battle does not signify a lot of aerial battles, we kept the ball on th floor toavoid them, commn sense, one might think. Because we knew we wouldn't win aerial battles we used a different tactic and we nealy scored from it. Cabango would hve improved our chances but he would have been facing Flint and Morrison, respectively 9cm and 6 cm taller than him and far more experienced, no guarantee of winning a high ball really. Did they back off to defend their lead or because we were playing better? You can't do much without the ball, besides defend and I think they backed off because we kept the ball and pushed them back, just my opinion, I'm not going to claim it's common sense. Backing off was a tactic we used when we were playing well but then other teams found a way around that, we kept trying and as our performances worsened our defence looked more leaky. Common sense might say it's time to change strategy. Keeping on doing the same thing hoping for a different outcome but putting in dire performances, losing more games and not even looking like getting a shot in most of the time, hardly common sense. On another thread you said you'd be cheering Cardiff because you seem to think we are certainties over 2 legs. So tell me, do you really believe that we played better because Cardiff let us or because we are capable? I think it's because we are capable. With that I'm withdrawing because I've been here before with you and so have others, you'll keep going and going like it's a war of attrition and in the end you'll think you've won because I gave up. I believe what I have just posted. It's my opinion whether anyone else agrees or thinks it common sense or not, I believe it. We played better and forced them back.
