I certainly agree that the days of the manager telling the chairman who he’d signed are long gone. But in general terms, positions, type of player, character etc are all surely the manager’s responsibility. So, say, Cooper wants a number 9, he should be saying that’s the position he wants, this is the type (eg, a Borini or a Graham type player), anything about preferred experience levels, age, etc etc. That’s a happy middle ground between ‘I only want x’ and ‘here’s a player in a different position you didn’t ask for as we want him fit for another team’.

He has been backed up to a point, though. From his comments Hourihane was one he really wanted. And most of the England juniors loans/transfers appear to have been his targets. He can't (and hasn't afaik) argued that he hasn't been given anything he asked for and is merely a continental style head coach working with what he's given. Both Morris and Whittaker have looked like decent pickups, but for injuries I don't think we'd have much cause for complaint about the team's forward options. Ayew's always been at his best centrally for us and his country. Garrick's playing well in a front two in League One. Cullen scored twice against Forest.

Cooper has stated frequently that we haven't had a natural striker all season. That is obviously one position, judging by his comments that he feels aggrieved about.

If we had signed a proper centre forward at the start of the season we would be up with Norwich now. Cooper wanted one, desperately. Foolish owners (Oops, they are not owners, investors I meant to say). Likely to bite them on the bum.

| Ariolla Leaves on 16:53 - Mar 31 by londonlisa2001 | Whereas I agree with the more general point that managers cannot expect to have full control over transfers, there are two issues with this window that make it a little more complicated in my view. One is that the manager HAS to have control over the positions signed. In other words, he can’t say I want that particular no 9 from x, but he should be able to say, I need a number 9. Second is that there is a continuing mania from, presumably, our ownership, for increasing the links with the US. It’s the whole ‘America’s team’ bit. We saw it with the disastrous appointment of Bradley, which was so obviously shocking at the time it was unreal, we saw it with these players, we see it with the pointless shirt sleeve sponsor in the FA Cup, we see it with the PR stunts involving Landon Donovan. They have to stop. It doesn’t work. The standard at which most of these players play is not high enough. No surprise to be honest that both picked up significant injuries - it can be a sign of the difference in physical intensity, games but also training. What an absolute waste of loan spaces and money. We’re still in with a good shout, so let’s keep fingers crossed, but the decision to bring them over rather than get a centre forward in, may have cost them £120m. |
Where do you draw the line though? If Cooper wanted us to go out and sign a bog standard #9 targetman, should we have acquiesced? If what the manager wants flies in the face of the type of football the club are trying to instil do they agree with him or stick to their plan? We caved in to Monk and his desire to buck the plan and see where that got us. I don't see the move to strengthen the links with the US as a bad thing necessarily. It's a potentially huge market with significant commercial revenue potential. Yes, the Bradley decision stank, but in Morris and Arriola we brought in two potentially very decent players whom Cooper largely ignored when they were available. It's clutching at straws somewhat to label a tragically unfortunate ACL injury to Morris as "a sign of the difference in physical intensity, games but also training". It was rank bad luck.

Reading between the lines, Derby needed the money and it was deal that was too good to pass up even though we could probably have waited to get him - the talk is we've only paid 250k for him so far. So for me this certainly was not a one or the other type situation.

Is there any evidence that our current owners specifically want to play a style of football thats at odds with Cooper's style then? Do we know if they actually have a preferred style? Bony played in our team when we played beautiful football and he was an out an out striker. Cooper may not neccessarily be referring to a Duncan Ferguson style lump when he speaks out about not having an out and out striker. Potentially very decent players - what's that based on then? Morris did look decent, he was given playing time. As for Arriola it was said he wasn't up to speed when he came following his recovery from a serious injury. With that in mind I'm glad Cooper ignored Arriola. It's not like we actually needed him, the incumbent of the right wing back position is hardly having a bad season. And in some games Roberts directly contributed to us gaining points that frankly very likely wouldn't have picked up if Arriola had been playing instead.

"Potentially very decent players - what's that based on then? Morris did look decent" The prosecution rests, M'Lud. They appointed Potter, who at least looked like he wanted the team to play decent stuff. Curtis and Britton were four square behind the appointment of Cooper. Do you think either of them would have backed a long ball merchant? Look at the way we play. We pass it around the defence and deep midfield and invariably end up knocking it into the channels or crossing it in. What kind of striker do you think will be more effective in that kind of football? Is a set piece team all we have aspirations of becoming?

Yea proof was in the pudding with Morris, what was there despite a few goals against the likes of Curaçao& Trinidad to suggest Arriola was capable of contributing? He's an injured 26 yr old playing for one of the MLS's worst teams. You could say Potter was appointed for his record of achieving success on a modest budget too? So you're saying the board have this vision, but how does that then translate to them appointing Cooper who's got this reputation of playing boring football? As i say, plenty of strikers aren't type cast. Bony being a great example who played well in a passing team but also enjoyed the aerial battles in the box. Same could be said for Kieffer Moore who is far more than just a lump. Cooper got Brewster last season and he's certainly no lump ball carthorse so not sure why you assume Cooper would only want a Sam Vokes type.

Chief the judge and jury have decided Cooper is guilty on all counts. despite recruiting the likes of Brewster and Gallgher kast season and Gibbs White this season players not akin to hoofball many on here have decided Cooper is not ever planning to play the "expansive entertaining football" that we were identified with...and believe that Curt and Leon were conned...People are questioning when posters on here make statements about the difference in fitness levels and intensity between the MLS and championship....lets put a different spin on that how many senior ageing pros at the end of their careers deened past it it the PL and Championship..."excell" in the MLS...they can as its a huge step down...but its Coooers fault he is given 2 players not ready for the step up...and cannot cope with the level of training intensity to get them in step for the Championship....oh yes what a great time to chanhe manager as the wise man from the East has suggested

Not directly, no, it’s bad luck as has been said. Plus the likelihood of an ACL injury is higher when you’ve had one before (even if it’s the other leg). But it’s undoubtedly the case that a significant uptick in training / playing intensity leads to far more risk of injury as muscles, ligaments etc etc are under more pressure than they’re used to. https://www.sciencedaily.com/r

I’m not certain after watching us this season that we have a particular style of play other than try to score more than the other team. The best way to improve our following in the US is to be in the premier league where it’s shown on tv there. Cooper didn’t ignore Morris. He played quite a bit. And looked meh. Let’s be honest. We saw more in young Whittaker in one game than we did in Morris. Arriola we didn’t see enough of but the little we did see was not great was it. I’d argue by the way, that when we actually did have a very defined passing and possession based game under Rodgers, that we signed a fairly bog standard no 9 in Graham and it worked out very well. It’s the position where just someone who can hold up the ball and score goals works. Can always sell if we get promoted if necessary.

Morris came on for the last ten minutes in a couple of league games. In the cup game he started people were enthusiastic about him. How many minutes did Arriola get in total? I’d love to know mind what type of football can be achieved with a midfield of Grimes, Fulton and Smith. Don’t get me wrong - all put in a huge shift and have their moments, but creative it is not. Neither is a back line of Bennett, Cabango, Guehi (he’s the most creative), Naughton with Bidwell and Roberts outside. We have a reasonable squad pushing for promotion to the top division. The flair we had when we last did it is on a completely different level. But of course, we didn’t sell anything that moved back then.

A midfield with Gower and Pratley in it could also be denigrated in a similar way, yet Rodgers made it work. We didn't sell anything that moved? Tell that to Jason Scotland. He was sold at a premium and replaced in exactly the same way we do now. Cooper's been here nearly two years. The way we play is precisely the way he wants to play. Precisely the way he has proven his teams can succeed. Let's not pretend that he's been let down. We are what we are because he's made us that way. If we achieve promotion then he could rightly claim to be justified. If we fail then we face the choice of doubling down on it or trying to find another way. Make no mistake however, a stadium full of supporters will not tolerate the tedious shite that's been served up for much of this season.

He binned off two of them for not being dogged enough. Gallagher looked very average for us compared to how he played at Charlton before and West Brom since. Always off balance and out of breath, worked too hard for his own good. I don't buy the argument that the way we play isn't down to Cooper's methods or intentions, that he's simply been dealt a poor hand, poor dab. His fingerprints are all over our performances for good or ill (depending on your perspective).

What absolute gibberish. American players pick up injuries because it's less intense than than the long ball championship tripe. And why should our owners not look to tap into the United States as a market. Their football is getting better and better every season and it's a matter of time before that league, with some tweaks, takes on real international appeal. And reading forums as I did before Arriola got here was the consensus felt Arriola to be the more technically gifted to Morris - who is pretty much universally thought of as a big miss to us. I said all along, if Cooper keeps on getting results he will get away with not playing Morris and Arriola but as soon as the results stop he'll have to face their music - and rightly so. The January transfer window, which was lauded as "brilliant" really was just hopeless. Hourihane has completely derailed us almost single handedly and the 2 US boys that could have provided a real attacking spark were looked down Coopers nose at. The smug, arrogant, egotistical idiot he is. Do you know in the last fans forum he spent the entire time watching a game on his laptop?? Yeah, he did answer questions when asked, but come on, as if he couldn't record the game to watch after and devote his precious time purely to the bloody fans. Apparently as other people were speaking you could hear Cooper going oo-errr to every missed chance. It was pointed out to me by someone there who was getting very pissed off with him. Simple answer to that is a Club has financial restraints and can't just give the manager what he wants. And when Cooper spunked 3/4 of the January budget on Hourihane, who has ruined us, then there wasn't a lot left for ANOTHER England U-17 player. Begs the question, can adult players really respect ex TNS reserve players?

Compromise between what a manager wants and what a club can/will provide is an inherent part of the relationship. All managers will have things they want or feel they need, but there's not many cases where a manager is given full control of a club these days, and for good reason. It's not their money, not their club, and they can be gone in a flash whether they succeed or fail. The vast majority of managers can't look further than 6 months in the future, the pressure for immediate results is always on. There needs to be counterbalance to that short-term focus, and owners, chairmen, directors of football etc. provide that when they say no or bring in a different player sometimes. But you're obviously depending on those people being good at what they do. See: Marvin Emnes. |
