| Tesco in town 17:54 - May 17 with 4506 views | britferry | Wants to end the free parking arrangement, can't blame them, the car park is always rammed during the day but the store never reflects this. They must be losing customers thru it. Tesco is looking to scrap the free parking arrangement at its Swansea city centre store car park - asking the council to pass a ruling that would mean people have to spend £3 in its store if they want to park there. Currently, motorists are free to park at the supermarket giant's Marina store car park for two hours without having to visit Tesco at all. When Swansea Council gave the go-ahead for the superstore to be built back in 1999, the use of the site as an ancillary car park for city centre shoppers was integral to its acceptability. In January, we reported how Tesco had sought approval to install automatic number plate recognition cameras and ticket validation terminals, whereby customers could still park for two hours but only if they spent at least £3 in the store. Those who didn't would be fined £70, reduced to £42 if paid within 14 days, but this wouldn't apply to parking stays of half an hour or less. The store asserted that its car park was under considerable pressure due to its use by non-store customers, but the application was refused by the council, which stated "large numbers of parking spaces were always available and traffic was flowing well" at the car park, based on a number of site visits. https://www.walesonline.co.uk/ [Post edited 17 May 2021 18:19]

Aside from mental times like the week before Christmas, you can always get a space in there. I don’t think they are losing business? They’ll just end up with a massive car park with lots of free spaces in the centre of town. Having said that, I haven’t been there for a long time. Maybe it’s got a lot busier with non customers since the St Davids and Leisure Centre car parks shut.

I expect the new multi storey car park to be open soon that will free up space for parking but will be chargeable. All town/city centres should be free parking for 3 hours if you want to regenerate the city centre that's the way to start.

As to be expected, many walking straight out towards the city centre and who can blame for them saving a few quid. A great location for Tesco's but not sure the shoppers are affected from getting a space most of the year.

Best not to do the big Christmas shop in there and queue at the checkout then.

It's very fair. If you park in a Tesco car park you should be buying goods from Tesco. At least they'll make some money from people popping in to town and then buying a sandwich/drink on the way out.

If you are actually shopping in their shop like it’s intended for and not just using it to go somewhere else you have nothing to complain about. Some people expect everything for nothing, it’s one of the results of so many living off benefits and tax payers money after a bit they actually think paying for something is wrong.

we'll soon have a sob story in the SWEP about somebody getting caught "who only popped in to Boots for some important medicine for their sick relative"

Shafted by Westminster for 60 years then & now 20 years by the Cardiffcentric Welsh government. But, does anyone really believe anything would change for the better with Welsh independence ? The Swansea council remains toothless. Until well paid employment opportunities flourish the city will continue to struggle

That's interesting. Shouldn't the council and Tesco be reminded of this

Back in 1999 their was still plenty of free on road parking and cheap parking in car parks. Since then the Council have covered the area with "residents" parking zones, one way systems and inflated car park charges. Perhaps every council owned car park should offer 1 hour free parking.

Every council owned car park should offer free parking for 3 hours. It would the quickest and easiest way to rejuvenate the city centre.

A pilot study would be worth it to see how it stacks up. There is plenty of revenue going in to the council coffers from the car parks but what a trade off it may be with more people in the centre and perhaps less empty shops though the NCP ones would cry wolf.

Swansea Council has spent years trying to make it as difficult as possible to drive into town to do shopping and then wondering why city centre shopping is dying on its arse. Sadly it ain't going to happen.
| Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back. |

Getting in to Swansea City Centre is a nightmare and to be honest I don’t bother going there any more. I can get everything I need in Trostre, Fforestfach, Cross Hands Carmarthen and Amazon. If wifey wants a day out in a City Centre she goes to Cardiff. It’s sad to be honest, Swansea Vity Centre is being left behind.

well what a day. Lets pop in to town, she says, I won't say what I thought So after being stuck in traffic all the way from Dyfatty, I heads in to the multi on Orchard St, she whineged, so I parked a few levels up, plenty of space there, bit pricier than the council ones but we were in, we crossed by the Dragon, Kingsway was bumper to bumper, as I pointed out to her, 200 yards down the slope and we were on Oxford St, which I also pointed out. After a few shops, she bumps in to a friend, she'd tried to park in Tesco, it was rammed full, she ended up over by the marina after being stuck in horrendous traffic, which I also pointed out. Couple more shops, back to car and out in no time... which I also pointed out. So no more shopping for me, I hope.
