| Liam Walsh still not ready for selection on 10:45 - Sep 13 by onehunglow | We have done this before. I fear this fella will never really play much for us and will either be invalided out or retire of his own volition. Pointless having skill of not the body A shocker of a buy. That said,we have loads of midfielders Our issue is what to do when we get to the Box . |
He was free | |

| Liam Walsh still not ready for selection on 13:40 - Sep 13 by raynor94 | What was his long term injury? |
Three major injuries A quad injury out for several months (last season) and two hamstring injuries for 3-4 weeks one last season and this one. If he is over the Quad injury its just a matter of managing the hamstrings. He has a clear season before last with Coventry City in league 1. He is 23 and had 30+ games for Coventry at 21 or so. Similar to Cullen and Ollie Cooper who are a year younger he had not played that much before Coventry at 21. the 60 games in 6 seasons is a lot more than Cullen and Copper at the same age and they are not seen as 'sick notes'. From what i can determine has only had one season wrecked (by that quad injury). This is young player not an older professional like Fer and Olsen who also had long stretches out. Not match fit, despite the managers positivity, he’s not ready. With his history of injuries it would be foolish to rush him back.

Fair enough, if he can get himself right, he'll be a decent asset to have.

Not a bad shout that, he went back to Wolves and they used him sparingly until they absolutely needed to, virtually a criminal waste.

The good will to Gibbs White a Wolves player and the derision for Liam Walsh is a sight to behold. It is likely that Walsh is not quite of the potential of Gibbs White but is a real good player never the less. Gibbs White's career has also been bedevilled with injury breaks but he is the greatest thing since sliced bread and would have guaranteed premier league football. He played about 10 games last season. Walsh on the other hand (who played 10 games less than MGW , is a crazy signing and a waste of space). From a little research Liam has had 3 major injuries in the last 16 months or so. Before that he was not injured. He is only 23. One guy said '60 games in 6 years'. Ollie Cooper 1 year or two younger than Walsh at 22 has played about 8 games in the last 4 seasons. Cullen has played less than Walsh too and neither are considered injury prone.

Well said, Resloven. The lad is just about to turn 24 years old and he’s got three years to run on his contract, so still a bit early to judge him based on being out the first five weeks of the season. The skills, ability, vision and intelligence he has are a genuine rarity in this division and he has all the makings of a star for us. For me, he is the key to this season and much will depend on his ability to get and remain healthy. It is to be seen whether that will happen, but we are all of 6 matches in. I have seen enough of Walsh to have a massive amount of belief in his ability, and I have full confidence that he will come good with us, and we will witness the best he has to offer on a weekly basis for several seasons. As I have said all along, he needs a bit of time and patience to get up to speed and then we will see the full results, same with Martin. Expecting everything all at once is often a fool’s errand and a pretty disappointing way to live life in general. Rushing a player back before he is ready is how many long-term injuries occur in the first place. I can’t predict the future, but no one else can either. These guys are made up of the same stuff we all are, they’re not machines, and very few people understand the physical toll being a professional athlete has on you. Criticising a lack of effort in players is one thing, that is a reflection of their commitment to the game that affords them a nice living. They should all take that quite seriously, and it is understandable to be upset when they don’t. But injuries mostly come down to bad luck, and it’s often the player who is most upset with the situation. It can be a very debilitating experience for them to go through mentally, especially while dealing with the injury itself. For perspective, there are countless examples of young players who have missed time and excelled afterwards. Jack Robinson of Sheffield United is a good recent one for this level, written off by many prematurely, and he has spoken at length about the depths he sunk to as a result of it. Time and patience are the keys.

Excellent news, Keith. Hopefully he’ll get a runout, he needs to build his match fitness up. For me, he’s the key to the season he has the ability to be that integral to how Martin’s system works. Hopefully we’ll see him at his best soon.

My concern is we don’t need to mate, if he is still not up to speed he really shouldn’t be involved. I’m certain he will be a last resort if he does come on.

I can definitely see that side of it too, Keith. If he’s not ready, give him more time. We don’t need a long-term injury. If he is ready, it would be nice to see him for a bit, but you’re definitely right about last resort territory. Would really like to see how the team plays with him, Downes, Ntcham, Piröe and Obafemi on the pitch at the same time, though. One can live in hope.
