Matt Grimes will leave the swans in January 5th Oct 2021 12:45
Sources close to Swansea City have confirmed that Julian Winter will almost certainly be looking to cash in on what he can in January regards the sale of Swansea City’s captain. By then Matt Grimes will have only six months left on his contract. 1

He's going to have Declan Rice as direct competition for his entire career - only a week younger. Kalvin Phillips likely a mainstay for the foreseeable as well. England rarely short of centre midfielders, Ward-Prowse with almost a decade of PL experience is a standby list player.

He’s got a long way to go Jasper, but he has the ability.

Doubt he"ll be putting his foot in where it hurts then, and will probably be injured in December

Future.
I like Downes.

Downes should be captain, great attitude on and off the pitch. Right sort of player that likes a tackle and can fire other up and has had captain experience at club and international level (age groups).

He already has a long term contract (4 years) but after 2 that needs to be reset to 4 again with an extension if at all possible.

It’s rare you get such long service from a player these days, but if we can make him a new Mr Swansea like Leon was, and look after him, we won’t go far wrong there.

His deal ends in 2025.

But on that link it says:

"Swansea City has taken up an option to extend the contract of midfielder Dan Williams until the summer of 2022."

Has he signed a new contract since then??

Poll: Simple...would you want Leon in the squad right now, if he was available?

You've said that before but please, can you explain to me how that works? They cannot force Grimes to sign a contract nor force him to find a new club. If he decided to see out his contract all they can do is tell him he won't play, that is their only leverage. When the next window opens Grimes will have 6 months left won't he? At that point he can talk with other teams, negotiate a deal.
All we can do now is tell him to agree to leave in January or he won't play the rest of the season and hope he doesn't want to hang around but we will get hardly anything for him in January. Whereas, if he's willing to wait another 6 months he could have a good deal waiting.

Go back to last June. Swansea would put a final offer on the table for him with a promotion bonus and a buy out clause. Everything he notionally wants as captain. He would be given to the end of the month to make his decision. If he declines he is told he has played his last game for Swansea with a two week "change your mind option".

There was some discussion that talks were held with Fulham before Silva and they could not agree his wages. Fulham had a budget.

At that point Grimes would have two options.

a) Not playing for the next 13-14 months on low wages and no bonuses. He would be a less not more attractive proposition being out of shape and a contract rebel. Not a good combination.

b) Accept a lower than ideal salary at Fulham with the transfer fee going to Swansea. There was a simple correlation. High wages for Grimes and low fee for Swansea.

By late Summer and not playing Grimes would need to accept any offer made to him if he does not want to lose a season in a short career.

In effect Narsingh did this and his career has spiralled down the leagues and now at 31 he is unemployed. A year of sitting around at Swansea did him no good at all. He did not last long at Feyenoord was loaned out then released.

Potter told him he was not in his plans and he still declined to go on loan on slightly lower wages. He wasted one season at Swansea and two more at the end of his career. He was only 28. Grimes is 26 or so.

Swansea did it with Asoro. Everton did it with James Rodrigues. They did not get much of a fee for Asoro but happily he did not 'do a Narsingh' and see his career flow into the river Tawe at 22.

"Your done here mate find yourself another club". They have been nice to their Captain Grimes and it has not been reciprocated. Why on earth is he still Captain?. It makes no sense to me at all.

He would not have turned Fulham down pre Silva if he had no other option like a cosy gig at Swansea as Captain.

Maybe I'm in the minority on here these days but Matt Grimes is a better footballer than Joel Asoro.

True but irrelevant. Asoro's value had plummeted and the club wrote him off. Grimes had remaining value. The only way to cash it in was to force him out. The club did not have the stomach to do this,

Grimes remaining value is seen on the football pitch. Strongarm/bullying tactics can work ways (see Downes).

Ipswich got a fee for Downes. Swansea may get nothing for Grimes who theoretically is of a much higher value.

Its not bullying. If a player does not show commitment then the club can chose to pick someone with commitment in his place. Grimes may still be at Swansea from his own greed and not accepting the generous Fulham offer that was rumoured.

Telling a player he's got two weeks to sign a new deal or he's played his last game for the club is absolutely bullying tactics. If we expect players to honour their contracts and behave professionally then clubs should too. Do we want to emulate Sam Alladyce's racket, telling players he'll hamstring their careers if they don't sign on with his agent (and then following through if they don't)?

Maybe by January we'll be in a position where we're stronger without him in the team. Right now he's still our best midfielder. The other options all have a distance to make up in form, fitness and/or experience.

Asoro was told he wasn't good enough and had no future with us. He wasn't told "you're one of our best players but we'll drop you if you don't sign a new contract".

Grimes has no future with Swansea city effectively. His replacement was in place in the Summer. Swansea do not need him.
