| Covid variant B.1.1.529 on 12:39 - Nov 27 by Professor | Yes Cat. ALL coronaviruses use spike proteins to attach and invade host cells. As such, and as surface expressed protein of the virus it’s a good immune target. It does not change that much- these are relatively small mutations, so a good vaccine target. We do know it will change offer time (50 years of vaccines for avian coronas) and the antigen needs to be updated. If omicron becomes a widespread issue (not all variants of concern have), then look at a new vaccine version for a booster next year. In the meantime the most sensible thing is to get a booster and wear a mask on public . One point - viruses don’t have a cellular structure. They are just nucleic acid surrounded by protein (capsid/coat) and lack a membrane that all cellular organisms have (including bacteria). Better called virions or particles. Some question whether they are truly alive. |
Listen to this man, unlike most of us (myself included ) we don’t know what we’re talking about re COVID. He’s an expert for a reason. [Post edited 27 Nov 2021 14:57]

It seems from reading the article, he is siding on the belief, that other scientists are overstating the situation. Why do you think he would come to that conclusion, if nobody knows what's going to happen? It's a genuine question BTW, just interested to know why he has gone against other scientists opinions.

It was only ever a matter of time, they announced cases in Belgium yesterday didn't they? At that point it was probably already here. I wonder how long this variant was circulating before they discovered it? It could have been several weeks depending on the testing regime in affected African countries.

He does seem to say that, but I also think the media are and it creates panic. I read an interview with Prof Pollard from Oxford University earlier, he said it was "extremely unlikely" that this variant would cause big problems in a highly vaccinated population. The report in the guardian just says "unlikely". That's a big difference and out of order on behalf of the Guardian. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

The media are trying to sell papers, nothing sells better than bad news. I'm triple vaccinated now and in another 7-10 days Ill be as fully protected as it gets, for a few months.

Looking at the BBC website now, Whitty doesn't seem to be that confident in the vaccinated , taken from the BBC website. 'Prof Whitty says it is not yet clear whether the variant can escape the vaccine but evidence suggests there is "a reasonable chance" the variant can partially dodge it. He says the booster will strengthen any vaccine response, hence the government's push to get more of the population boosted. I'm highly sceptical of this new variant, are they just pre empting the failure of the vaccine? Are they expecting more deaths now Winter is coming, and just going to use this Omicron as an excuse? How much has Omicron mutated from the original virus? [Post edited 27 Nov 2021 17:44]

The vaccine hasn't failed against any variant so far. This variant is its biggest test as I understand. I think its likely to stop most people getting seriously ill but not necessarily stop them getting infected. If it is more infectious than delta it's going to spread like wildfire at some point over the next couple of months, it's considerably different to the original Wuhan virus. I don't think there is much to be sceptical about, it's just a crap situation and feels like a kick in the guts. It is real. This is the situation we'll be dealing with for a while yet, you'll get covid. Getting a vaccine will give you as much protection as possible.

Didn't they say they'd found 50 new mutations? I won't understand the actual science until/unless prof explains it. I am just confident that as long as I don't get it until my booster has fully kicked in, I should be ok, the odds are in my favour. The fact that we haven't heard of thousands of Africans keeling over and dying also reassures. With their likely poorer health AND healthcare, we should be ok. We'd be even more Ok if the anti covid vax brigade would see sense.

Yep, from my reading (not knowledge) there's over 50 mutations, 32 of them are concerning and that's double the number with Delta. I think it may be a little early to assess fatality as its only been identified for 2 weeks. It could be that vaccines or previous infections may be stopping people getting seriously ill even if they may get infected. That seems to be the biggest hope.

Only identified for 2 weeks yes but it must have been around for longer. How long I couldn't guess.

SA doctors reporting very mild symptoms for this variant. It could be what is needed and reflects how other viruses have declined. Fingers crossed, we will know soon.

What I meant was surely there is no correlation on another's vaccination status, like if I was to take it, I think the last thing on my mind, would be if somebody else had as well.

They seem to be the ones dying the most, and causing the NHS more problems than if they were vaccinated.
