Whittaker and Obafemi are called in to training early 27th Nov 2021 12:51
Both Swansea City strikers Michael Obafemi and Morgan Whittaker were in training by 9am this morning. As to why on a match day these two players would be doing extra rounds is open to speculation. However, what we do know is the rest of the squad selected for today were not with them bar a few of the usual treatment issues pre match. 1

Another conundrum, Obafemi and Whittaker again, click above.

It's not about whether he "deserves the chance" to play, or show off in front of a crowd. Swansea City is a football club trying to win matches with the assets at its disposal, not a charity out to reward good lads who work hard.

imo Obafemi's issue isn't that he's a poor worker, it's that he's a mediocre and injury prone talent in the first place. Whittaker a different case as he's shown he can be a threat at this level (when played in his position up front). Overlooking a lad who scores goals on a Saturday because he doesn't make enough sprints on a Thursday is missing the forest for the trees: prizing the method over the result.

I've been told that whittaker has the same attitude problem.

So the manager should reward oba for not turning up on time and not putting effort in like everyone else?
How do you think that would go down the those players who do?

It's not a social club, it's a results business. It's not about rewarding him for bad behaviour, it's about getting value out of the player we've invested a lot of money in. Banishing him hurts the club more than it hurts the player, if he's as good as he's supposed to be (personally I don't see it, he's fast and..?)

Is it better for Swansea City to keep a hardworking Liam Cullen happy and in the matchday squad, or to give a Whittaker or an Obafemi a run of games to show what they're about during the 90 minutes twice a week that it actually matters? Whittaker at least has shown he'll likely deliver more than Cullen will, bad attitude or not.

Obafemi has not been banished. Martin considers the Obafemi is not as valuable to the team as Cullen and has not picked him.

Martin has outlined what Obafemi and Whittaker need to do to get into the squad. They must do it or will be sent on loan and ultimately shipped out of the club financial investment or not.

Both have big potential but came to the club at knockdown prices. The baggage they brought with them were included in the price. It is the clubs job to turn them into stars. Its Martin's job. The club has done it before.

It seems to me players who come through the Swansea system settle much more easily in the first team squad than imports.

Potter protected Asoro but it did not help him. Plodding along is not an option on the money they are on.

Naturally you’d expect someone who’s been at the club since age 10 to settle more easily than a 21 year old from England/abroad who finds himself in Swansea, the furthest he’s ever been from family. Unfortunately few local youth graduates find themselves as first team regulars.

.

This is what it's about. End of.

It's worrying that our very biggest signing from an EPL team for some time, such an explosive, pretty unique, rare talent at this level, scoring with aplomb against the very best teams in the EPL is being so mis-managed right now.

In fact the more I think about it as I write, it's shocking that our manager is not being massively held to account for where we are with our biggest signing.

What the heck is going on, Martin ?

""Unfortunately few local youth graduates find themselves as first team regulars.""

Last 12 years

Ben Davies, Joe Allen, Conor Roberts, Joe Rodon, Ben Cabango , Brandon Cooper, Liam Cullen

Add to that Olie mcBurnie, Dan James Jordan Garrick.

Hopefulls: Ollie Cooper Cameron Evans

Piroe settled real well. , From the PSV school. Most of Cooper's loans slotted in real easy.

That's not a long list over a decade (Allen born 1990, Cabango 2000), especially given B. Cooper & Cullen haven't yet broken through to become genuine regulars. Have to do better.

McBurnie was 19 when we signed him (same as Grimes). Spent as much time away on loan as he did with the u23s before breaking through.

I think it is a decent performance established from nothing. Can do better of course. It seems some loss for focus in recent years with Cardiff doing so much better at the moment st least.

One has to consider the desolation that existed before the 2002 take over. Bemoaning the lack of local talent in Swansea's academy is not entirely their fault. If the talent is not there its not there. The area has not produced a decent international Premier league centre forward for decades. John Hartson the last. Perhaps Neath player Colwill will be the next.

I wonder had it not been for the takeover would Ben Davies Joe Rodon and Conor Roberts be professional footballers. Joe Allen was always a stand out.

We certainly shouldn't forget the likes of Richard Duffy who carved out a decent career after he came through the academy in 2001 ish. If I recall he was out for around fourteen months after playing that season. As well as Shaun McDonald who came through the youth set up around 2004.
There are others.

Ben Davies was playing in Denmark in 2002. Viborg's academy.

I think we have to keep them…attitude or not as we are heading into the busiest time of year on the pitch and no doubt will pick up a few injuries along the way. The squad players… Whittaker etc will no doubt get an opportunity for a run in the team.

100% this.

If a professional footballer doesn’t conduct himself in the right way he doesn’t get into the match day squad.

Not sure where the not sprinting in training comes from I’d imagine the issue is far more than that.

Thus far the case against Obafemi and Whittaker consists largely of rumour and hearsay. The case against Cullen consists entirely of watching him play.

As it stands the much praised recruitment team has swapped a 14 goal mature 27 professional goalscorer for an immature 22 year old non goal scoring non performing kid with some baggage.

To this point its Asoro mark 2.
