Canting 'sheep shagger' at someone is illegal and racist proven in court. Chanting it with 2 300 mates does not make it legal.

Nobody should support or excuse any kind of origin based abuse. Whether it’s technically 'racism' or 'xenophobic' doesn't really make much difference. All this debate seems to be is what category of abuse to put it in, but neither is acceptable.
While I don't categorise the sheep stuff as ''racist'' as such - it's xenophobia if anything, I don't think it matters. I think it would be tough for someone to make a case that it is ok while other origin based abuse is 'off limits'.

But what if someone isn’t offended by people being racist to them? Usually all it takes is “some” to be offended for it to be considered offensive and those that aren’t offended by it are usually ignored. Lots of African American people despise BLM for example and the lies they push, but they are ignored some the “some” that falsely claim oppression.
I don’t think a lot of the English stuff is said in good nature. Some of the hate for the English is deep rooted, especially in the Valleys. I remember in school kids were genuinely taught (by parents I must stress, and then each other) that they shouldn’t have a girlfriend that smokes and shouldn’t have one that is English. Never really thought much about it at the time but it’s pretty shocking really.
So the ‘assumption of the intention’ behind the comments, shouldn’t come into it as that isn’t extended to anyone else for any other comments. Was it Souness they went after because he said “there should be more coloured lads in the game”, so it’s a slippery slope to only allow context to be considered in “some” cases but not in others.
Largely, if you are from a predominantly white county and are white yourself then you are fair game for origin/racial abuse (which is why French, English, Welsh, German stuff is seen as humorous), in terms of religion if it is mainly seen as “Western white” then it can be attacked - anyone else is off limits. That’s essentially what it boils down to.
If people want rid of this sort of thing then all of it needs to be treated the same. Whether it’s racism/xenophobia/anti religion - no single category is worse than another and all have been a large factor in people facing historical persecution, including white people.
I do find it slightly ironic fans applaud the knee for equality then spend 90 mins telling the ref he’s a cheating English idiot, there does seem to be a disconnect there.
So if context matters, then context needs to considered across the board. If context doesn’t matter in some cases, then it shouldn’t matter in any cases.
If we are to move forward in 2022 and people genuinely want any race, country, religion, origin stuff removed from abuse - then it needs to happen everywhere, there should be no hierarchy of acceptability.
But personally speaking Flynnadine, I agree with you.
I don’t think difference is offensive at all, it’s natural and one of the beautiful things about humanity. But when you start only allowing some people to point to differences in jest, that’s when you get the issues. When that happens I’d rather it all was canned, currently it’s used as a trap to further the race divide and trap individuals they want to point the finger at.

People are laughing with some races, ethnicities and origins in jest and it being acceptable, while others is off limits and are getting punished for it by an insatiable society.
Let’s say there was an Indian pitch side reporter and they said “back to you in the studio” at a Birmingham game for example… and the presenter said, “thanks for that now you can go off and eat a curry from one of the wonderful Indian restaurants around here”. Can you imagine the uproar? They may never work again and would get hounded by Twitter until they lose their job or have to issue an apology. Not really offensive though is it?
Now reverse the ethnicities. A match at the seaside, Brighton for example. And the Indian host said “thanks for that, now you can go and try the wonderful British fish and chips around here”. Nobody would bat and eyelid.
So currently there is not equal boundaries, but it’s designed that way because you will have a never ending amount of people falling over a barrier that is designed for them to trip over, meaning a never ending amount of people that others can attack for being a racist or a bigot.
This insistence that only some people can make these good natured comments but others can’t is what needs to be stamped out. But that will never happen, so it should not be acceptable across the board on that instance. | |
