Irish fighting for Franco yes but I have not heard of Brits (English, Scots, Welsh) fighting for Franco, there might have been the odd one for Franco (not that I have heard mind) but there was a few thousand that fought for the international brigades from Blighty. |

This is an updated version of the story, Tramp. Published much later after more records were released at the PRO.
To describe them as ‘British’ volunteers is a bit of a stretch. Out of the forty or so who stepped forward half were looking for an opportunity to escape or get messages back to SOE. A few were Irish, a few more had one English or Scots parent and one German. There was the odd Aussie or Kiwi with mixed Balkan heritage and one fourteen-year-old captured boy sailor who thought he’d been recruited by the Foreign Secretary!
There were a tiny handful who genuinely volunteered to fight the Soviets. A couple saw front line service of which one, John Cornford, was killed in action. [Post edited 1 Mar 2022 16:29]

Oh now then, there was British on both sides some fighting against Hitler and some fighting for Hitler was there.
Now as you might have worked out about me us old valley boys, Sunday school and the like don't lie and don't like people with an agenda (which unfortunately nearly everyone not from God's country seems to have), I'm not accusing you of having an agenda per se but to say stories of there was Brits on both sides in the Spanish civil war, come on, no different to there was Brits on both sides in the second world war, it's skewed and gives an unbalanced unfair view.
That is why I don't like people making out during the troubles in Northern Ireland one side did this and they did that, hello both sides did bad things, this old valley boy likes balance and fair play.
Apparently "Renegades Hitler's Englishmen" is a better read than the one I put up. | |
