I bet Dan James would have ended up as a wing back under Martin |
Might have got that loan to Yeovil he was asking for.

Of course he would, we were winning most weeks. It was the lack of crowds that caused such bad feelings in many peoples view. A view that is correct in my opinion. Football in general was boring with no crowds or atmosphere, everyone watching football being played in empty stadiums completely detached from it. Imagine this season under the same conditions. ''Mind numbing'' wouldn't even come close.

He was desperate for a striker like Obafemi. Want to know a shocking fact? Obafemi alone cost 80% of what Cooper had to spend on transfers in both his seasons combined. EIGHTY PERCENT.

Obafemi alone cost 80% of what Cooper had to spend on transfers in both his seasons combined. EIGHTY PERCENT. Which is still only a fraction of Ayews wages for the season. Its not really fair to compare transfer budgets without comparing loan fees and wage budgets. But this has been done to death so there was no point in you bringing it up again. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Exactly. Cooper was hamstrung by that meaning he couldn’t add the players he wanted. A championship player using 80k a week of the budget is horrendous. He didn’t choose to add Ayew to the squad for that amount of salary. I would imagine if he was available on a free for 80k a week there is no way he would be added to the squad with his blessing, that money could be used for x8 10k a week players. His loan fees were barely anything. I think the only one that cost a bit was Hourihane. He worked on a shoestring and made the best of what he had. I will always bring that up when people say he was backed. He wasn’t.

| Points comparison on 11:09 - Mar 22 with 724 views | jasper_T | I've not seen figures for them, but I doubt Cooper's loans cost "barely anything". The three we brought in this January have cost us the best part of £1m plus wages. Burns represents a significant outlay and he's nowhere near the profile Brewster was. Paying six figure fees to develop players for other clubs. It all adds up. | | | |

I think the majority of clubs outside of the Premier league were working on a shoestring at the time due to lack of income.

The reason isn’t relevant, I’m not blaming anyone for it. I’m simply stating he would have loved to have brought in multi million pound players. Martin has had the luxury of signing millions of pounds worth of players and been able to shape a team as he wants. Cooper was hamstrung by a player that was here when he got here and had to largely work with what he had or what he could bring in for relative peanuts. The budget wasn’t there for him to bring in the squad he wanted. That much is obvious.

To be fair we couldn’t splash out under Cooper so much, we were largely hamstrung by the wages of Ayew, Borja, Van Dee Horn, Routledge, Dyer and a load of other players left over from the PL era. This is probably the first season in about ten years our wage budget is at a sensible and sustainable level, Ryan Bennett excepted. A lot of the loans Cooper had wouldn’t have come cheap though.

He did well with the resources at his disposal as he has again this season....not bad for a so called "lucky fraud" Whilst this season Martin is defended as he fails....you couldnt make it up

Agreed, again I’m not blaming anyone for it, but that was the reality. We were hamstrung by players being paid exorbitant amounts of money that they really didn’t warrant. So people saying he was backed are incorrect, he wasn’t. We weren’t in a position to back him, he made do with what he had. Coopers loans were cheap. They were youth players with the parent clubs wanting them to go out on loan to gain experience. Brewster was free, I think Gallagher and Guehi were free too. Hourihane was the only one who cost a significant fee from memory.

He got a lot of the players in that he wanted. Pretty much his entire England u-17 team passed through here in his two years. Then there were others he’d worked with before like Pedersen etc. No manager at this level is going to get everything they want. Arguably he was backed a lot more than Potter who had to work in nothing short of a fire sale.

He got the players he wanted in the budgets made available yes, but that’s hardly something to shout about. If he had the luxury of a £5m budget + salaries like we have had this season, then the wanted list looks very different. Potter was given the highest transfer budget we had outside the Premier League in our history. £6m wasn’t it? And still had the likes of Dan James, McBurnie, Naughton, VdH.

Cooper had players who have gone on to be named for England and forge careers in the EPL. Plus Brewster who should be doing better in the right team. He also had Ayew who was a striker of EPL quality. Cooper had the tools to do the job but failed - twice

“Gone on” being the key words. When they arrived they were players of very little experience. Brewster doesn’t even get many games in the Championship these days. Cooper did not have the tools to get the job done at all. Hence why nobody expected us to be promoted. Show me you predicting promotion before either season and I will be extremely shocked. It won’t exist however because nobody was that mental, not even you. This is simply revisionism to suit a narrative.

Who would have expected us to get to the playoffs in Coopers first season given we lost Dan James and Oli? We scrapped in to the playoffs at the last hurdle and lost to Brentford after conceding an early goal when Cooper committed about 9 players up to an early corner for which he was slated at the time in fairness he was hoping to get an early score so Brentford needed at least 2 goals it backfired. Its amazing how peoples memories are blurred or selective just to suit their agenda... Had Obafemi not got injured and then arrived in the January window Im sure things may have been different but we will never know...maybe the lucky fraud Cooper will be third time lucky

Correct. Cooper was so successful with what he had, a select few boil his managerial stint down to 90 mins of football. It’s all they have. The fact he’s gone on to turn Forest from relegation scrapping fodder to promotion contenders must be grating with them. But if they don’t get promoted from bottom of the league I’m sure one or two will be pretending he “failed”.

Did you actually watch the game ? Anyone there or who watched it on TV would have seen how passionless he was throughout the game. I don't know what he said to them but he may have well said nothing. For all Martin's faults, at least he shows some passion.
