Live for today and that is what matters they argue. This is perfectly valid. This had traction earlier in the season with posters pointing to ex manager Cooper rapidly improving Forest also with no pre season. Martin used a number of so called 'excuses' for poor performances in deep winter. No pre season, "the Patterson issue", unsuitable players not fit enough for the rigours of this style, tiredness. etc. injuries Covid disturbance etc. Perhaps for the first time the idea of developing for "next season" is beginning to make some sort of sense after three consistent performances and wins two without Downes. He recently stated he had to build the plane while 'in flight'. Martinez, Brendan and Potter all have pre-seasons to mould their team and playing style. Another decent result today for Cardiff city who were smashed out of sight last week by Martin's men . Were they so bad? Perhaps Swansea have taken 8 months to hit the groove.

| Its all about next season! Is this thinking valid? on 22:51 - Apr 11 by Dr_Parnassus | Brendan did not play keep ball. That’s a myth. Do you know what our average possession was? |
“We have a default mechanism which makes us hard to beat and we can pass our way into the game again,” said the then Swansea boss. “Rest with the ball. Then we’ll build again.” In Rodgers PL season we led the league for passes in our own half, keeping the ball was a defensive approach. We averaged 58% possession which isn't bad for a newly promoted team. Only 36% of Leon's passes went forward (fell to 30% under Laudrup).
| Its all about next season! Is this thinking valid? on 00:03 - Apr 12 with 1058 views | Lorax | I remember an MOTD pundit saying we passed for the sake of passing under Rodgers, that most of our passing was along the back line in our own half. others may remember differently. It is all about next season now but it shouldn't have been that way from the start of this season. I had hoped to see steady progress but it has been more stunted with big steps forward then sliding back, more forward gains, then slide back. it's happened about 4 times now. With nothing to play for now, I think Martin should give some youngsters more match time. Get them up to speed, lets see what Congreve and Rushesha and the others can do. This summer, the transfer window, it is a massive one for us. if Martin gets the players he wants and we can keep Piroe, Oba and Downes, we have a chance. | | | |

Yep both Rodgers and Martinez played a mixed and direct game, we had width and pace, full backs, wingers a pivot midfield player. Playing keep ball is what Martin does (did) hence we often ended up with 75%+ possession. This was an extreme rarity under either Rodgers or Martinez. While we would have the lions share of possession, it was not for the sake of keeping the ball but a result of being on the front foot. In the Premier League we will of course have a more cautious and defensive outlook, but in terms of like for like championship approaches. Martin plays (played) keep ball and Rodgers did not. We have never played the way Martin wanted us to, not ever. There is a reason for that. I implore anyone to Google any game from the Rodgers era and find how many games we had 70%+ possession or 750+ passes. I’m not even sure if one exists. [Post edited 12 Apr 2022 2:47]

I have removed any matches where either team has had a red card and noted those with no data. I’ve gone back half a season (23 recordable matches) prior to the playoffs. - Millwall 2-0 (W) no data - Ipswich 4-1 (W) 61% possession - Portsmouth 0-0 (D) 49% possession - Burnley 2-1 (L) 49% possession - Hull 1-1 (D) 60% possession - Norwich 3-0 (W) 53% possession - Preston 2-1 (L) 52% possession - Forest 3-2 (W) 57% possession - Derby 2-1 (L) 50% possession - Watford 1—1 (D) 58% possession - Scunthorpe 1-0 (L) 61% possession - Leeds 3-0 (W) 59% possession - Coventry 1-0 (W) 45% possession - Doncaster 3-0 (W) 66% possession - Boro 4-3 (W) 56% possession - Cardiff 1-0 (L) 54% possession - Bristol C 2-0 (W) 52% possession - Barnsley 1-1 (D) 47% possession - Palace 3-0 (W) 57% possession - Leicester 2-1 (L) 48% possession - Reading 1-0 (W) 55% possession - Barnsley 1-0 (W) 52% possession - QPR 4-0 (L) 47% possession - Sheff Utd 1-0 (L) 52% possession 53.9% was our average possession under Brendan for the recordable half season prior to promotion. There was no “keep ball”, we did what we needed to do to give ourselves the best chance and often dipped into the 40% possession realm. In fact, as you can see (and it may shock a few) we dipped below 50% in over a quarter of the recorded matches, 26% of the time. So what Martin brought here initially being “the Swansea way” is a complete myth as I said at the time. During the era that is being referred to, we played direct and purposeful. We would play out from the back but not knock it around aimlessly for half the match, we would happily sacrifice possession and pass count to make the correct plays regardless of how it looked on the stats sheet. This season we are pushing 64% possession stats , a ludicrous number not born out by the results. It’s been detrimental to our results with a direct correlation between points gained and more moderate possession and passing data. So in short, we are trying to live up to a mythical way of playing that never existed for us, to the detriment of our results. There has been a marked improvement recently where Millwall aside we have seemed under instruction to sacrifice both possession and pass count in favour of quicker and mixed passing with the focus being taken off short passing at all costs. I remember a Cardiff friend of mine said after the game we beat them 1-0 with the Emnes goal, he said that we just pass it constantly back and forth the back 4 and you don't do anything with the ball! Yoi could imagine his face when I said that we put the ball into your net more times than you did ours. The morale of the story is that people will see what they want, its the same as all Martin wanted to do was pass the ball sideways and backwards just to get the % of possession up.... Makes you wonder how we actually got the goals. People can't see the foundation that these things are building for a few reasons.

We had 51% possession in that game and had over 3 times more attempts. Our possession in that game was extremely efficient. Certainly a world away from 800 passes, 80% possession and 2 shots.

Doc The words horse dead and flogging are here Peoples minds are made up so let them run with it...it is now all about next season really aas this season has gone We have had our season of transition ...the players now seem to have caught up with the prpcess as shown by our recent run of results...where we do things exactly as we did in our opening matches of the season....despite a chnge in our kick off tactics for example. but the blueprint hasnt changed...its just the players execution has imporved, So next season is the acid test I will be pleasantly surpised if Obafemi and Piroe are both still with us,,,I wonder what is our plan B should they be gone? But RM will have a full preseason and so we will be expecting automatic propmiton as this has been suggested by some on here but play oofs at least now. Maybe RM is learning ...and some of his stubborness is being eroded funny after telling Fulton he wasa not in future plans he ahs featured and estarted the last two games. Opinios will always differ people see what they want to see.....The football we playede at the season start for all its high possesion stats was nothing like that played under <Artinez or the Swansea way. It is the same as people saying we couldnt string passes together un der Cooper....these folk need to go back and watch the games again.....like Milwwall away last season where we won by 3 goals ans there was interpassing a plenty. We have had our season of transition ...the players have now got the plot as recent results show....Lets see how the process unfolds now.

Our long balls doubling and even tripling yet our pass count and possession tumbling certainly shows a distinct switch in style. One of the biggest issues identified at the start of the season was our lack of width, he seemed completely unwilling to do this, getting rid of our wingers and natural wide forwards even the likes of Bidwell removed from the club. Pace was also not being utilised, why use pace when you are restricting your players to short passing? There was no balls in the channels no runs as there would be no cutting longer pass. Knowing we wouldn’t go long we were susceptible to the press and were often pushed back to our defensive third for much of the match where we were trying to not lose the ball as opposed to look to attack with it. We were very slow, centrally mobile team and that was the Martin way and that was where the criticism was coming from. Since then he has adapted, he has had to. We now try and play wide as often as we can with even Ntcham getting pushed out there when available, we make double and triple the long balls to utilise Obafemis pace, we don’t just look to keep the ball away from the other team which in turn means we have faced less relentless press as they know we can attack quickly and exploit the space they leave. So I see it as a clear change in approach which has radical changes to match patterns, which leads to more positive outcomes. I don’t buy the “same approach but just better” because it really is not similar. But you are right, there is no hiding place next season. Not that there needs to be of course.. if we continue to approach games sensibly like we have been I have no reason to think we will be anything but successful, we have a fantastic set of players. If we revert to 75% possession and 750+ passes a game however the results will suffer as a result and so will the mood. So it’s up to him now, he’s got the tools, he just needs to use them correctly and he has all the instruction manuals now laid out for him.

There has definitely been an adjustment. Obafemi and Piroe are making runs and the ball is being pushed whereas before we were quite static with passes going to feet with not enough movement. If what is happening now was always the plan then well done; if what is happening now is an adjustment to his thing then it's still well done. Everyone has to learn, to find the best way. No one way is 100% correct, we all have to make adjustments in our lives as circumstances change, life itself is about transition, we are always changing, always learning. It's not a stick to beat anyone with, it's a straightforward fact, everything changes, we all evolve. Fulton getting picked again is a change, a welcome change for myself. it was a dreadful waste of a reliable player to ditch him. Maybe its no coincidence that Grimes plays better alongside Fulton seeing as they have a lot of games together. maybe Downes and grimes will never work as they are too similar though to me, Downes is the better player and I'd like to see him and Fulton together. It is now all about next season so ets see some experimentation, lets see some fringe players given their chance so we can decide whether to keep or jettison them. Lets go into pre-season with a very clear idea of who we want to sell, how many players we need to bring in and in which positions.

It was a quality we showed in the PL season under Rodgers trying to avoid relegation. Promotion from the Championship not necessarily the same approach. "They are currently No1 by an absolute street when it comes to Premier League teams making passes in their own half. Swansea have made 2,474, practically lapping the team currently in second (yes, Arsenal) and making more than three times as many defensive passes as their tactical opposite, the get-it-forwards merchants of Stoke City" https://www.theguardian.com/fo

I agree well done for making the changes. It is extremely overdue - but still credit for doing it. It wasn’t always the plan though hence Obafemi was on the bench. Playing longer balls is something the side was used to already, it’s not something that needed to be worked on or built. The issue was we went overboard on the passing and possession and had to drastically reduce it as it was having an adverse impact on results for all the reasons stated at the time, it is more a demolition job than a building job. We already had the attributes we are now reverting to, we were a direct team last season.

Agree that it is laughable that some think Martin has suddenly had some sort of ephinany or that Martin has taken advice from some on here. The way we are playing is the way Martin wanted it from day one. I was at Blackburn when we started with the possession from the back game. Fast forward to Saturday against Derby and we see the same. The difference for me is that the players are getting more used to playing his way. Looking forward to this continuing for the rest of the season and into next season

Its not about the possesion from the back and in fact we did it quite a lot lasat season though many dont beleive it.....the Stoke away game is a great example...thier goal from a mistake mage by Geuhi you know the player everyone goes on about us missing.... Our first goal came from a move started by Woodman playing it "short" to Naughton and then a move builds. https://www.swanseacity.com/ne We still look to play from the back but we dont faff about and keep ball we look to use it . Where has this “people think he’s taken advice from here” thing come from? As I said earlier, if that were the case he would have changed it in week 3 not 33. There is no epiphany, just a reluctant realisation that his way was no working. The reasons why not were obvious, I’m sure even to him in the end.

That's what the myth is yes, but a country mile away from the reality. You don't get 4th in the Championship by doing that.

Read my post again. I said 'mostly' not totally. We relied on ayews guile to bring others on and cooper relied on his leadership. When we needed the players to step up ie the PO final we were found wanting, we never even looked like getting a shot on target. Now I feel if we get a glimmer of hope of a PO place we are far better prepared to succeed.

I think we lost one game without Ayew out of 7, winning most of them. Another myth.

I’m not posting for your benefit, I’m posting to correct a myth that can sway the thoughts of others that don’t know better.
