Its all about next season! Is this thinking valid? 23:36 - Apr 9 with 5193 viewsReslovenSwan1

Russell Martin has drawn scorn off many poster for always talking about 6 months hence. Live for today and that is what matters they argue. This is perfectly valid. This had traction earlier in the season with posters pointing to ex manager Cooper rapidly improving Forest also with no pre season.

Martin used a number of so called 'excuses' for poor performances in deep winter. No pre season, "the Patterson issue", unsuitable players not fit enough for the rigours of this style, tiredness. etc. injuries Covid disturbance etc.

Perhaps for the first time the idea of developing for "next season" is beginning to make some sort of sense after three consistent performances and wins two without Downes.

He recently stated he had to build the plane while 'in flight'. Martinez, Brendan and Potter all have pre-seasons to mould their team and playing style. Another decent result today for Cardiff city who were smashed out of sight last week by Martin's men . Were they so bad? Perhaps Swansea have taken 8 months to hit the groove.

What changes?
The only difference is the players are more settled and midfield is learning they have to keep moving and be in positions to receive the ball.

We have gone from regularly going above 70% possession, single digit long ball % and a pass count in the high 700’s.

If we were playing “the same only better” those key indicators would still be the same but we would be getting better results.

We have changed to a more direct style. We utilise the long ball and use the pace in our side to hold back the press, we spend less time knocking it about the back aimlessly and have introduced triangles and a mixed passing game.

Every single point has been mentioned every week since game week 3. I’m amazed you haven’t noticed.

It was all about next season. Always.
Steady the ship, build, and bounce.
Pretty obvious. But some don't get it, or don't want to.

You may well regret that analogy.

- the ship was sinking
- crew (fans) were jumping ship in their droves (the seismic change in fan sentiment from Poll #1 to Poll #2)
- fans voted with their fingertips, their feet and their wallets (season ticket non-renewals)
- more fans were Against than For Martin
- a mutiny was launched where senior players wrested control and forced the changes : control of the tiller, change of tac, zip/speed etc etc.....
- I hear Ambassadors Curt and Britton 'had a word'

Let's hope our ship maintains the winning set-up and remains on course.

Some posters will never understand, nor change tac. The gang-plank beckons.

So you do understand that he has finally made the changes I’ve been advocating from the start?

That’s all that needs to be said really. Who knows more is a different subject all together.

If we recognise that those that wanted a more mixed and direct approach called it right then the rest of it is all rather irrelevant to be fair.

Right?

What changes has he made ?
Stopped the dangerous interaction between keeper and defence, the tipi tapi, the backward passes ?
Please identify the changes

The recent changes have been aided and abetted by Fults' return and resurgence in confidence.

Fults has also boosted Grimes' confidence and thus his troop.

Onwards and upwards under this change of tac - on The Good Ship Martin..........

Which is basic football and absolutely nothing to do with Martinball.
Many posters have ben crying out for more of that for a number of years, basically since Leon retired.

The problem with waiting until next season is there’s no guarantee Russell Martin will be here. I’m sure they said the same thing at MK Dons “wait till next season” and he buggered off immediately when a higher club came in and he’ll bugger off from here if he gets an offer from Norwich or similar team.

This is why long term project building is irrelevant in todays game. If he doesn’t get results he gets sacked if he gets results he gets poached. The average manager barely gets a year at a club these days.

It’s good to see us put a bit of consistency together. All season long we have fluctuated between devastatingly good to atrociously terrible with nothing in between. It’s just a shame it’s too late.

Even more likely is that the essential players to winning, who are not those playing Martinball around our Penalty area, but those who make and score goals will move on.
Without as good or better creative players you can pass it around our Penalty area until the cows come home and it won't win any games.

I have mentioned one several times....we are more direct from our kick off.

Previously the ball went back often to the keeper..more recently it goes back then immediatly or one pass sideways straight out to the wing.

This reduces the press...puts the ball in oppositon half and has the oppostion wondering what we will do.

We are no longer "predictable" in that the ball ogoes back to our keeper and backline from the off...
Thats one change...

We are also looking at balls into the channels and box more for Obafemi....Not all the time but more so than previuosly in the season.

So there are two subtle changes...No one is saying Martin has ditched possesion passing football but he has intorduced a less rigid approach that is looking to use the ball not just keep it.

We pass backwards and sideways less now...we still do it...we did on Saturday midway in the second half each pass followed by a noise form the crowd...as we passed the ball about,,,going nowhere but we kept the ball.

No one has advocated he has torn up the plan just tweaked it and there signs are there.

I would have thought if next season were the entire focus he'd be putting more effort into blooding the players who will be with us next season. Ogbeta's been fit for a while but barely had a kick. Despite playing twice a week rotation has been minimal so far, when enforced.

The way Kyle Joseph was brought on in injury time to wind down the clock makes the here and now look very important to Martin. He'll be wanting a strong finish to hang his hat on.

Absolutely agree Jasper and I have posed this previously...surely we would have been better not bringin in the likes of Wolf, but developing our acadamy guys, fetching Ollie Cooper back ,Play Barndon Cooper rather than loan him out start to develop a squad / team using our resources...so they understand the systewm and process.

Small rumour we are exploring another loan for Wolf for next season.

Good news that, think he's getting up to speed to what is needed, pre season and he could make a massive difference to our season, he's improved much over the last few games, plenty more to come from him, hopefully.

The loans for the Coopers were the right moves. Both at an age where they need regular football. Wouldn't have done Brandon any good to be in Burns position right now. Was playing well at Swindon until the injury.

Ollie was having a great season so even though he might have been ideal as fresh legs coming on for Piroe/Paterson it was better to leave him where he is. Allows a much younger player like Congreve to step up to the matchday squad and hopefully get a few more tastes of senior football. Ollie's been injured the last few weeks but supposed to be back in contention for Newport's game on Friday.

If we've nothing to play for against QPR then I would hope to see some new faces (Rushesha, McFayden, maybe even Cotterill) given a run out.

If we had kept the scoreline at a 2 goal difference RM might have been more inclined to give so youngsters a chance in the last fifteen.

Abdullai is another on the fringes. Martinball is a figment of peoples imagination.

Brendan played 'keep ball' at Swansea but now Leicester City are far more pragmatic but will good possession based principles.

In my opinion Swansea wanted to keep possession a against Derby but 70-80% possession only occurs when team drop back and park the bus. Swansea do better against teams that compete for the ball. In this case more wins at 55-60 % possession.
