| Rwanda flight on 22:28 - Jul 23 by Gwyn737 | It’s not Ukrainians who are/were being threatened with Rwanda. They’ve got a legal route to arrive and be processed. Afghans, Syrians etc. haven’t. I don’t think it’s necessary race related. More nationalism used to blame the wrong people. |
The majority of the Ukraine hasn't seen war. No idea why they have come over here.

UK can decline to keep the here. That is also a choice. UK obligations are to put them in a place free of being under threat with the right to peace safety and comfort. I consider I would get all these things in Rwanda. UK is a welfare state. Getting onto UK soil is not the only requirement to benefit from what we fought for.

| Rwanda flight on 07:18 - Jul 3 with 1077 views | AnotherJohn | Rwanda has been presented as an exemplary case in moving towards comprehensive public healthcare coverage for its population - an African pathfinder when compared with richer countries like Nigeria that have made minimal progress on this. https://www.afro.who.int/news/ What strikes me is that some of the same "progressive" voices that were heaping praise on Rwanda's social programmes a couple of years ago are suddenly saying that the country is beyond the pale. That is what happens once a country features in the immigration debate, | | | |

You are making a big assumption that they are coming here to scrounge from our welfare state. They want to work like anyone else and make a better life. Incidentally, our welfare state in no more generous than many other European countries, in many cases it's not as good

Far better than most European Countries none of them offer free health care for illegal immigrants, tourist and visitors alike. Add in free education as well. Most European countries do offer welfare benefits but none offer free health care, espellcially to visitors, you have pay every time you visit a doctor .

It is true there are more hoops for migrants to jump through to get low-cost or free healthcare in most European countries (several have co-payments even for citizens). Would the migrants not be better off in Rwanda with its widely-praised universal healthcare coverage?

That’s quite a short term view. It won’t be long before everyone who is young and healthy now will be old and ill. Just a few short decades and the nhs will have to absorb an extra 606,000 (last years figure and rising) extra people a year.

That's true. It's still no reason to treat children like this: The Tory Party need to learn that wanting to control immigration doesn't require you to turn into some kind of Disney villan.

Hard to predict. Sweden found a higher than expected need for mental health services, and Germany imposed regulations to limit utilisation of dentistry services where there was high migrant demand. One wonders about high rates of tobacco use in males from many middle eastern countries, plus an absence of public health measures such as vaccination for many younger people in their country of origin. To the extent that there are significant numbers of women and children, reproductive and child health services are the next most expensive area after care associated with ageing. After the NHS was established in 1948 the backlog of untreated need (in a population that had not had access to low-cost public healthcare) meant that costs rose faster than had been anticipated. It may be that those arriving by boat are similar in that regard.

The problem with that argument is that a worker needs to be earning well over £40K p.a. before they make a net fiscal contribution, and not so many irregular migrants are likely to be in that situation. The step cost of increasing health and social services provision if the present volumes of arrivals continue (circa a million a year) is likely to far exceed the extra tax take from migrants in work. Imagine what the situation would be if our fan base grew rapidly. We would extend the stadium to cope for a while, but then we would come to a position where a new stadium was required and costs rocket.
