Dock workers etc 16:32 - Aug 21 with 3883 viewsswan65split

Dockers striking for the first time in 30 years, rail, barristers who else is going to join.

With Truss aiming to clamp down on unions aka Maggie, I think theres a rough road ahead, all nice to forget the Covid disasters and money .

Please explain the reality of the last few years then.
A lot of record profits at the top, huge increases in wealth disparity.
Working people claiming benefits, barely affording housing and using food banks. Run down public services, faeces in the rivers and sea.

Is that the reality you want to settle for? The top % getting everything snd you being happy to have the heating on for an hour in winter.

In regard to your second post, i use the phrase working people to describe those going out 5 days a week or more, doing their job and scraping by. The working class of people who could not afford to be unemployed.

Yep,we need to stand together and grab what we can
God forbid we actually accept the reality of the past years.

All out General Strike.

Let's bring the country to its knees.

If businesses close then tough.Innit

Businesses will close because people can’t afford to pay the prices they will need to charge to remain profitable.

It would be funny if it weren't so sad.

The same people who urge (correctly) that we as a club should not spend money we don't have and put Swansea City's future at risk...are all for spending money the country hasn't got to give themselves all a pay rise that will put their children's future's at risk.
Somebody, somewhere, is crying...laughing...crying...laughing etc.

The same people complaining about inflation were the same people urging the government to shut down the economy faster, longer, pay everyone's wages and stick it all on tick.
That's what created the massive inflation, imbeciles.

The problem with the government is that they were voted in to do the opposite of what they are doing...they get swept along by idiocy because they are too weak to stand up to the mob.
Negotiate with a terrorist and you get more terrorists.
Give in to the mob and they come back for more and more and more.

The reality is that there has been sod all cuts to government spending. I know this for a fact as I have family members involved, at a high level, auditing government accounts.

People who work for the state have a cushy number and their pay goes up with inflation.

This year is the first year that anyone employed by the state has felt any pain...the pain was caused by them - the state employees were invariably the people who wanted to lock themselves indoors "working from home" and were urging the government down Keir Starmer's garden path...they created the frankly, massive inflation tsunami coming our way and now seek to hold the politicians, who were so weak and stupid that they listened, to account for giving them what they demanded.

...and what is the purpose of the strikes?
So they can bring down the Tory government and replace it with more spending on state employees (including those on benefits) which will create MORE inflation.

I know, let's put that moron Ian Walsh in charge, he can dish out the milkybars and I can fecking emigrate.

I find it hard to believe unions turning down rises of 7%, I wish I had an offer like that in my working life.

And I can remember inflation at 18 % in1976.

You give it out, you take it back it`s all part of the game

The country is in a real state, our infrastructure, environment and public services are getting worse. There was an interesting article in the Telegraph by Nick Timothy, for a true blue Tory he was very critical of the government’s performance, the ideology that market forces would resolve everything and referred to the energy and water companies as just another failing fake market created by the government.

Our lack of joined up thinking and foresight in relation to energy is shocking, 5 years after deciding to withdraw support for Rough Field gas storage site a critical piece of national infrastructure and allowing it to close, the government are now in discussion with Centrica about reopening it so we have some scope to build up gas reserves ! If the lights go out Truss won’t last long.

Government spending is not the same as household spending, income does not equal expenditure. The uk is around 2.5tn in debt. Most of that being owed to itself.

As for your supposed "facts" most of them are blatantly not true.
There have been cuts to public services as most have not received funding in line with inflation, which makes it a real terms funding cut. (Only Health and Economic affairs have received increased funding due to covid etc).
Most state departments have received very minimal pay rises across the last 10 years. If any were received it was usually locked at 0.5% or 1%.
Office workers wfh did not cause the economic catastrophe we are deep in the mire of.

The purpose of the strikes is for better pay and working conditions. The shambles inside Westminster do well enough on their own in bringing themselves down.

The ever expanding state and the burden people who work for the state and are dependent on the state are on the private sector (both in terms of tax take, hoovering up possible productive workers to go and sit on their arses for the council instead and the bollocks extra costs and work they create for productive people...in the name of an imagined utopia they hope to build) is the cause of the "economic Catastrophe" you speak of.

We are unproductive. The people of Britain are not adding much value...mostly we are lazy and waste our time on pointless things..

What I speak of in Wales is a hard fact. You have been conned by left-wing politicians and the media.
Swansea council for example have had their funds increased in line with inflation throughout the last decade...still they spout bollocks about cuts.
They rely on the population being ignorant, uninformed.
They use you to put pressure on the centre of power (the South East of England) to give them more money to waste.

Check out Swansea Council's website on any day of the week, there are tonnes of jobs going, many are merely a vehicle for existing members of staff to get a payrise...but first they must turn up at the interview and trot out all the buzzwords and prove they think correctly to get their 'promotion'.

"Government spending is not the same as household spending, income does not equal expenditure. The uk is around 2.5tn in debt. Most of that being owed to itself."

- Printing more money (or loaning it from our children and Grandchildren) and dishing it out to unproductive people is making us poorer and poorer and poorer.

The ONLY way to create wealth is to add value ...it's not about the material world. The fatal flaw in Leftist thought, the fundamental way that they misunderstand the World, is that they believe that if only we all had enough green paper and had equal amounts of food/energy/metals/wood etc. everything would be tickety boo.
This is untrue and has ALWAYS failed.
It ALWAYS fails because wealth is actually created from the things that you do with the world's materials, or the things that you do that make you useful to other people.

If everybody works for the state, with no profit motive, there is no accountability for lazy sods...because the way we measure people's efforts (by how many people want the goods they have made, are selling or want the service you can provide) has been taken away.
They try to replace it with performance measures which are ALWAYS resented by the staff and ultimately circumnavigated...people stop producing much at all (so there is a low bar and you don't have to do much to please your boss) OR they just down tools periodically and demand more money for less performance measures.

The bigger the state gets the more it impedes the Private sector...who actually HAVE to be productive and add value in order to survive.
Every year the value of the British pound is diminished, the more benefits need to be paid, the more government services are demanded.

We have created a society of overgrown children, adults who take no responsibility for their lives, who WILL NOT be held accountable, for ANYTHING.

The U.S. of A has printed trillion dollars and pumped them into the World, The Euro is basically dead and in order to save face it is bailed out periodically, which is diminishing the value of the currency each time...and the UK politicians pretended they were going to make cuts, to sound tough and win elections, but actually have kept the taps on throughout...so weak are they, so scared of what the mob will do if they actually took steps to fix this country (which would mean pain and hard work, the likes of which most adults in the UK can't imagine)...they then choose (under pressure from the Left) to close down all business in this country (other than supermarkets and energy companies) and put everybody on the government payroll....for a virus.

For good measure they spend the 2010s agitating Russia over Ukraine and bingo! the psycho eventually takes the bait and invades...so the real price of gas and oil shoots up when we already have inflation spiralling out of control.
The situation is of our OWN making.
Did it ever occur to you that France's energy costs might be lower because they built Nuclear power plants whilst we allowed the Left to sabotage our own Nuclear industry?

...and lastly.
My old man is in his 60s and still gets up every morning at 6am, leaves the house by 6.30am, loads the van up by 7am, drives miles to the job that HE generated himself (lots of working for free, spending time generating quotes that he doesn't get paid for), pays a FORTUNE in diesel, works solidly in a physical and SKILLED job (I'd like to see some of the privilleged University arseholes try to do what he does) from somewhere between 8am-9am until a minimum of 6pm at night...7.30pm return is a good night for him, eats has a pint or two goes to bed and starts it all over again.
I can't remember a weekend where he didn't work at least 1 day of it, often 2.
He is self-employed, too proud to take any money from me, if he wants a pay rise he has to earn it, he can only put his prices up to compensate for inflation if;
a) he is good (he is fecking excellent at what he does)
&
b) the customers can afford to pay extra.

He doesn't get to go out on strike, crying about his lot...he would never behave like that even if he had the option.
He probably earns about a third of what your average Barrister make, maybe even a quarter.

The problem with this country is that we don't have enough people like him anymore and too many entitled over-grown children masquerading as adults.

He is self-employed, too proud to take any money from me, if he wants a pay rise he has to earn it, he can only put his prices up to compensate for inflation if;
a) he is good (he is fecking excellent at what he does)
&
b) the customers can afford to pay extra.

1. Are all public sector workers a burden then? Causing economic catastrophe. Lets forget about all the vital services provided.
2. As stated on a UK scale there have been effective cuts to almost every public sector. That is fact, the figures are there fkr themselves.
3. Printing money and handing it over to workers creates inflation, in some cases yes. But what does printing the money and handing it over to private companies do?
4. What is the profit motivation for police, nurses, teachers etc etc? As you've said if there is no profit more or less what is the point.
5. Energy costs in Europe are lower as they are state owned.
6. Being self employed means setting your own wages, hours of work etc. I have many friends in trades and they are currently raking it in, demand is much higher than labour supply and they can more or less charge what they want.
7. So the problem with this country is people not wanting to be exploited, interesting. Maybe when Rishi or Truss get in and start scraping away at the human rights articles you'll get your wish.

I’ll add another if I may:

8. If these public sector jobs are such a gravy train, why can’t we fill the posts?

Want to be a teacher? The sector is desperate. Many ways to get in away from traditional routes. You can get paid on the job via apprenticeship. You can be paid to train. You can get a ‘golden hello’ for certain subjects. They’ll even give you a ‘golden handcuffs’ if you hang on for three years.

We’re so short at the minute, there’s a two staged pay rise so new starters begin on 30k from next year.

And still it seems every ad break, cinema trailer or national newspaper has recruitment ads in them.

Balanced is the right word. It’s great that these successful companies are making massive profits. Take Tesco for example. A great British success story. One of the biggest retail groups in the world. They made well over £2 billion profit last year. Yet the huge majority of their 350,000 workforce are on virtually minimum wage and on part time contracts they can barely survive on. Surely they and companies like these can afford to give a little bit more back to those who work hard and drive their success every day. Every little helps right?

Give a little bit back is fair enough, the companies should have a scheme in place, that gives a % of profits to the workers, but would the workers accept a cut in wages if profits were down.

Difference between profits being down and making an actual loss, of course ….

Many companies make a loss Shell and BP made record losses during the pandemic did not see tye workers offering to take a pay cut.

In fact most small companies with under 50 employees barely break even and they employ 45% of UK workers. They are nearly all predicted to make a loss this year due to higher energy cost any excessive pay awards are likely to result in Bankruptcy and huge job losses.

Blimey. The Times leading article has come out in unequivocal support for the barristers and called on Raab to repair the damage done.

Didn’t see that coming.
