Indeed. Can you imagine the uproar in the Daily Mail if that was proposed ? 'Druggies given free treatment whilst hard working people's operations are delayed '

Yep. The fact that the money being saved from the prison, policing and judicial system could be ploughed into public health wouldn't matter a jot.

Well, let me put it this way.
Cost is the reason why you do not want criminals to be locked up for significant years.
I view justice and safety of the general public and its safety rather than looking after those who choose a criminal lifestyle.
If it costs, then it costs. The cost of losing a child is greater than any economic argument.

Never kid yourself crime is a chosen career and one than can reward handsomely .Do you honestly believe most career criminals are going to get their heads into a book,do exams and then do a job where they have to first of all get up in the morning.

People are so cheesed off with those more concerned about the criminal than the victim.

There are a plethora of schemes to "help" criminals and far fewer to help victims but there again, somebody who has been traumatised by intruders or had life savings conned out of them by a "non violent" fraudster, can never be rehabilitated.

I am heartingly ,genuinely sickened by all this concern for people who create chaos.

If they legalised it I’d probably be off my tits every day. Never even considered it in my life before but if it was legal I’d definitely give it a go.

Myself the thought of not being in control of my mental and physical condition was the main reason why I never dabbled, I did smoke but gave that up (unaided) over 25 years ago, not a big drinker so basically a boring old fart

You say that I am talking idealistically, it might be said that you are doing exactly the same but on the opposite side of the argument

You misunderstand my point, I have no sympathy for people who commit serious criminal offences. I am not saying that I do not want criminals to be locked up for significant years. I would have no sympathy with a house burglar who causes untold grief to his victims to go to prison for a long time. I have spoken to countless witnesses over the years to understand and empathise the devastation that this causes.

I completely agree that the life of a child is ultimately more important than the increased cost of more prisons and longer sentences

There is a difference between high end dealers making a lot of money and the ones you see on the street dealing to pay off debts or for drugs themselves.

People do get their heads down, have a look at this guy who shows what can happen if someone is given a chance and moved away from a crime family

https://therealmcavoy.com/

I am not an apologist for criminals, most of my practice is prosecuting, but this Government have devastated the probation service, the CPS, the prison budgets. Where is the money going to come from ? You keep saying 'just lock them up' but do not offer any answers as to how this could be achieved. Cost would be exorbitant and would take years for the prisons to be built.

I fail to see why you do not see any benefit in rehabilitation. Even if it works on 40 % how many victims would that save ? How much more taxes would you be prepared to pay ? What hasn't this worked in America ?

The fact you fail to see it Jon is simply your opinion.
I am concerned primarily with protecting the public and if they are loose on the streets they are endangering us and that includes you and your elderly dad.I would hate him to be on the receiving end of what Burglars get up to.

Who will be right now,I have no doubt ,be saying nowt, having been advised by his solicitor to No Comment and thus allow him to construct a "defence" where witnesses will be interrogated and intimidated and a Jury befuddled enough to find "doubt" and thus find him Not Guilty.

The Police will Im sure have a rock solid case which will see justice for Olivia.

He should get whole life and never be released.EVER

Maybe we should start educating people that anyone who buys illegal drugs are funding the lifestyle of criminals, and can lead to tragic events like this.

Rehabilitation for addicts is a separate issue

Naive, maybe, but just saying drugs are bad isn't working.

Well, just a cursory look around would tell one all one needs to know.
No future in Heroin or Coke so don't even think about it
It would help if people took responsibility for their lives.
Our forefathers had it much much harder in the 20s and 30s and had to survive the harshest of times. Nowadays,we are afraid to even raise our voices or even to call things what they are

Don't you think heroin users already know this? The vast majority of heroin users simply stop in time. It takes on average about 10 years, but they usually stop unless they get an overdose and die

There was plenty of addiction and alcoholism in the 20s Crime, wife beating and all kinds of abuse too

And to be in the position where you take heroin in the first place. You’ve got to be in a pretty dark place.

Of course! During the Vietnam war, there were so many US troops addicted to heroin and various other drugs, the authorities feared the country would be overrun with addicts after they returned home. This simply didn't happen. When the soldiers were home and away from the dangers and stresses of combat, they had no need to take these substances to escape from the reality, so they simply stopped. There were some of course, those who had other problems or battle stress, but the deluge of addiction simply stopped. Proving it's not the substances that are addictive, but the need to escape from reality, and of course the drug culture that many belonged too and embraced.

This is why imo, drug users shouldn't be classed as criminals. dealers are another matter though, especially the big boys, but they are usually the untouchable ones.

You do get the higher ups from time to time, especially with the Encrochat phone system being cracked by the (I think) Dutch police. This has led to a large number of conspiracy to supply class A cases.

Seriously big players. Trade worth millions

The Dutch must be doing something right, because their prisons are half empty and crime is low so i'm told, although I haven't researched this

Wrong.
Many in the music industry take it because their peers do or because its just done.,ie the Stones ,all at one times smack heads. That simple.

Drugs are a choice

Why are so many professional people imbibe Cocaine? Its because they are weak and want to.

People need to take responsibility for their lives.

Ive had very dark times and hoving a needle into my veins never occurred to me. Id rather have taken a shotgun to my head

Dont make excuses for the weak Jon,its a tough life and previous generations had it much harder.

Life is not as black and white as you make out. I have represented many people over the years who were initially successful but through a series of events lost everything, ended up on the streets, subjected to the most vile and unthinkable situations and wanted to disappear. it is not simply 'choosing to take heroin'

We need to have some empathy and compassion for those that have fallen away. Just because you were strong enough to cope with bad times, other people aren't.

The 'previous generations had it harder' isn't necessarily true either. I was very lucky in that I was the last year to get a full grant for Uni, got on the housing ladder just before it went crazy and am lucky enough to be financially ok.

People in their early 20s and younger now, have it much tougher than I did. Housing market out of their reach, COVID affected their education, prices spiralling out of control, freedom of movement in Europe, much harder.

The Four Yorkshire Men was a sketch for a reason.

Do you honestly not have any sympathy at all for those who have fallen victim to drug abuse ?

Good afternoon Jon.
Not a much as victims who are so because of crimes committed against them.Nobody forces anyone tohad take drugs. It is down to human weakness. Do you know appreciate we have to take responsibility for our lives and accept the fact only we should stand by what we say and do.

I can think of legions of people for whom my limited bank of sympathy lies.

Im thinking of the 7 yr old sentence given to somebody who had his girlfriend kidnapped ;it was appeaked and increased to 12 .Still be available for parole after 6 years. So a 6 year sentence. This girl was thrown from a moving vehicle and is now cruelly physically crippled and virtually her life is over.Mentally scared for life. I saw her parents being interview. I felt overwhelmed with sympathy and frankly by bank seems very low .

He was acquitted of s18, so the Appeal Court's powers were limited and that was nothing to do with drugs, just an evil man

Having quite proper sympathy for victims does not mean that you cannot have sympathy for those who find themselves in situations we cannot fathom. I cannot agree that it simply down to choice, like deciding to have an extra slice of cake. I've represented young people who were sexually abused, and who's parents not only used them as drug runners but tested their batches of drugs on, women who were pimped out from around the age of 14, and were given drugs by their 'boyfriend' homeless people who needed something to get through the night.

I lose count of the amount of case of homeless people begging or sleeping rough who were put in my court, that I did not prosecute, I told those who instructed me that if it came in court, I'd offer no evidence. I do not understand how you cannot see that it is not as easy as you make out.

People need help, victims become perpetrates sometimes through no fault of their own. There is a world of difference between millionaires who take all the drugs in the world and some hopeless homeless man, trying to get through the day.

Most of my work is prosecuting, I see horrible people in court every day but I also see people who are pathetic and desperate who need rehab centres, which will reduce crime and future victims. I'm not a bleeding heart liberal at all, but see the waste of time in simply locking low level offenders up. It does not work.
