Okay it's not perfect but where is? The town centre has a number of problems but the gateway in is now looking a lot better. However when people say Swansea is a dump thats so far from the truth. No matter what your social up bringing is, you are only a bus ride away from Langland, Caswell etc. We have the village of Mumbles the envy of many. The wonderful unspoilt Gower coastline and beautiful parks.
I know loads of people from parts of the UK and Europe who love living here. How many have been students and stayed...the graveyard of ambition.. Maybe because we are not a rich City but if you have a reasonable job you will have a better standard of living then you would in the Home Counties. Also I know a lot of middle age Swansea people who have worked in parts of England, sold up retired and with the excess of house value have moved to so called posh areas with change to spare.

Someone who works in Tesco in Swansea gets the same money as someone working at any other Tesco in the UK, its true that there are better paid jobs elsewhere but that's not down to the Swansea public accepting lower pay than anywhere else.

Not in London I would imagine. But even the extra couple of quid an hour won't go far in the Smoke.

I'm sure it's different in different industries and I can only speak of the one that I know of. In my experience companies pay distinctly less in Swansea in a large part because they know people will accept it.
It's quite possibly because Swansea is quite disconnected from any other major city. The nearest is obviously Cardiff which is an hour away. It creates a micro-market of a very small number of options.
But, in my experience, I have routinely heard people admit to being happy with it because it's Swansea

I think you are probably somewhat right, firms do tend to adjust their wage depending on location. They won't be willing to pay the same sort of wage when located in a less central location i.e Cardiff. But the same thing works between Cardiff and say London.

As for people accepting lower wages, of course they do, in most cases it isnt worth the additional travel costs nor time to commute for more money. So they are happier for less due to the job being local.

It's about cost of living surely? Many jobs ay a bit extra in London, Royal Mail do to start with.

The cost of living being much less in Swansea, a minimum wage job here goes further than it does in certain other areas.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Swansea is a shithole. It's a lovely area, but the city itself is a dump and there's nothing there

It was but in fairness the council are doing a good job in trying to spark something better here. The biggest problem for me is the amount of alcoholics and drug users all over town. There’s no plan to sort that out and until it is sorted people are going to be put off coming.

It’s a symptom of decay though sadly I agree with that.

Probably a lot better than the obliterated cities in the occupied parts of Ukraine that your Russian friends are liberating.

The walk from the train station down to Wind St makes a poor 1st impression for anyone visiting.

Get past there & the centre itself isn't that bad & obviously venture to the costal areas & people are blown away by the beauty.

Yes your Russian friends did a lot of liberating in Afghanistan before their tactical withdrawal and also destroyed most of the Civilian areas in Syria.

On the face of it it doesn't look too bad, but there's more beggars per square yard than anywhere I've been in my life.

Spent the weekend in London.
The numbers of people begging and obviously professionals was staggering.
So sad.
Swansea is I feel no worse than a lot of British towns and cities.
Lots we could improve but I would never want to live anywhere else

Exactly! this summer I have been to a few places

Reading railway station a few weeks ago and loads of people "living" outside the station
Oxford was full of beggars
Portsmouth one of the most roughest & chaviest places I've been to with Newport not far behind.

......the list is endless it's not just Swansea scratch the surface anywhere in the UK

Last time I set foot in Newport was 2004. Rough as a Badger's behind. We are lucky here and no matter what the problems of the City Centre, we are only a short bus ride from some outstanding areas plus beautiful parks like Cwmdonkin, Singleton, Brynmill and Clyne.

Up in Birmingham some weeks ago , traffic on stop at lights , cars being approached by beggars rattling their half empty McDomalds drinks containers asking for money .

Would be very intimidating for nervous drivers and single females travelling .

Called into Neath today , there are some sights by the railway station there also , so all areas have their problems . Cannot comment on Swansea centre nowadays , very rarely travel into there , am able to do my everyday errands without the need to visit the place .

Part of the problem why Swansea is on a slow downward spiral ,
Hopefully things will improve soon .

While I agree, if you get of the train and walk to the Quadrant you could get a very bad impression of our city. Beggars/homeless, drug addicts shooting up in public places and drunks.

There's a homeless man who sleeps on the street in the day time, often around the Travel lodge area, York Street, little Wind street. He's no harm, never bothers anyone but still, it doesn't look good. Then there are others who wander the city centre begging, actually approaching people to beg.

The world is a shite place. We should be so much better than this and we call ourselves a first world country, educated and enlightened. it's BS.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Interesting comments here. Most agree on the good/bad points.

In response to a couple of comments... I lived in Newport for 10 years. Rough as cats. I believe statistics show only Glasgow is rougher in the whole of the UK.

I spent last Friday night in Middlesborough. Wow. You think Swansea has issues? Loads of beggars on the route to and from the ground.

A family of four has just started renting the house next door to me. They moved here from Brighton. They've been to South Wales on holiday before and as both parents can work from home they decided to relocate.

What they can get for their money here when they do buy something would probably just about pay for a two bed flat where they were.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

"Centre itself isn't that bad"..its a dump with either charity shops, vape shops, phone shops, betting shops,or shops closed down..the scaffolding around my gym and zara has been there years and years it's a joke..council should make the landlord do the work..
