For the more pretentious..Das Kapital, Beyond Good and Evil, Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. No no because you will be fibbing :) Here's mine. The Old Man and the Sea. Ernest Hemingway. Brilliant short novel and still resonates with me now.

John Bunyon. One of my first memories of the late 60's is the hymn in assembly. I don't know what it is (and I'm very open minded to any belief) but I always felt uncomfortable with organised religion. Whether that was school, Sunday School or just going to Church. Luckily my late mother a Roman Catholic, my dad Chapel never forced anything on us. My parents married at the Registry Office and all the kids Christened in Chapel. We were just brought up to be good people and work hard, no matter what you do for a living.

I read Papillon when I was 23. Some good few years back. Absolutely loved it , what a great novel. I obviously saw the film first which was great but the novel is nearly always better. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Some years back and I am a massive fan of a lot of Stephen King but not all, I read 'Different Seasons ' I think it was four short stories. One was the Body, which became the film Stand By Me. Apt Pupil... wow!! about a boy who recognises an ex Nazi on the bus in the US... absolutely brilliant and Rita Heywood and the Shawshank Redemption.Which became Shawshank Redemption. The story was great but the film was an absolute classic! That was one of the exceptions to the rule.

After that, and I can remember the thrill of discovery all these decades later, would have been working my way through the old boy next door’s leather bound Jack London collection. I’ve been an obsessive, voracious reader all my life; fanatical, really.

A bit of a step up from the secret seven or famous five which was my usual fayre at the time.
| First Book You Ever Read on 23:07 - Aug 31 with 1751 views | majorraglan | Probably an Enid Blyton book, most likely the Valley of Adventure which was one of fathers old books. Also had some of the famous five books. In terms of adult books, I can remember reading some Sven Hassle books when I was about 13. | | | |
