Seems to be a thing on this forum posting irrelevant replies then insulting anyone who disagrees with your opinion.

Most drivers can be knobs
All drivers hate being told they are making mistakes
To insult a man and his driving is worse than having his bedroom prowess questioned

People now do 80 in a 70 and feel safe

If it goes to 80 then they will do 90.and on and on

Brakes are better but not drivers and the consequences of high speed RTCs are gruesome . Trust me on that . Fire boy could also tell you some horror stories of excess speed.

We need a harder test
All uninsured cars confiscated and sold
All drink drivers seeing their car sold and funds going to victims
Same with drug drivers .

Mobiles seized when in use whilst driving.

We need to be serious about preventing death by dyckhead drivers

The thing is you personally might be a fantastic driver and more than capable of driving say 80 or 90mph. But that is not accounting for the biggest variable and that is the skill of other drivers.

That being said going 80mph rather than 70mph is pretty pointless timewise, especially on shorter trips you'd be maybe saving a max of 5mins for trips under 50 miles.

There are certainly far too many poor, or at least uncertain drivers out there.

Anyone who habitually drives 10mph or more under the stated limit (and there are plenty of them about) is just as dangerous as someone who drives over IMO, as anyone who has been stuck behind people doing 35-40mph in a 60 zone can attest. This leads to the same kind of annoyance and possible overtaking risks as being stuck behind idiot cyclists doing 20 in a 40.

If you're not confident driving as close to the stated limit as possible, get off the road.

I was nearly run off the M4 by a combination of someone driving too fats and badly with someone driving too slowly.

Coming back from Cardiff I was doing 65 and coming up very quickly on another small car, I checkedd my mirror and the middle lane was clear though a transit was in the outside lane, it was a long way back. I indicated and started to pull out, the transit got level with me as I was about halfway across but then cut in across me, I had to swerve back into the inside lane but was going to hit the slow car. I had to swerve onto the hard shoulder, foot hard on the brake, ABS juddering and even though I was slowing down quickly I still overtook the slow car. I decded to accelerate away and pull back out. I had slowed down to 25mph, that slow car was doing (best guess)about 20. Slow causes accidents too and I was very lucky, I had my wife in the car and out then 3 year old son too.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Perhaps the worst offenders are those who don't use slip roads to get up to the speed of the traffic they're merging with. The one by the Wychtree Garage in Morriston onto the 4067 is a classic example.

The number of times I've seen (and usually been stuck behind) some idiot trying to merge with 50mph traffic at 30mph I'm amazed there hasn't been any serious accidents there.

On Police advanced tests, national speed limits can be waived in the training exercise.
Doing 120 over the Denbigh Moors makes you concentrate as does whizzing through B roads with hedges either side. I was never confident it was 100% safe and it wasnt but it needed to be done. At that speed ,you are soaked with sweat.

I did it on both car and Bike. The Bike advanced is for nutters really as your point about other drivers is well made.

I’d add retesting of people when they get to a certain age, the exact age would be determined by info on collision stats, medical research etc etc.

The risk of motor vehicle crashes is higher among teens aged 16—19 than among any other age group. In fact, per mile driven, teen drivers in this age group are nearly three times as likely as drivers aged 20 or older to be in a fatal crash.

Indeed and things like black boxes, stiff insurance premiums etc will improve the behaviour and safety of drivers in this group, but there is also evidence that drivers over 80 are disproportionately involved in serious collisions. I’d be guided by the science and look to implement retesting at the appropriate age.

Yes, Most Definitely.. People of that age, carry on driving, when they KNOW themselves they shouldn't..

I had to brake sharp a few weeks back, to avoid a head on with a god knows how old he was, but knocking on, he was on the wrong side of the road, yet totally oblivious.

Seems cruel though, to take away some of the only freedom they may have, I wouldn't shout out too loud about that, and complain, because I do like my elders, but sometimes it may be time to knock driving on the head, but they wont unless legally told to do so.

You can go 60 mph in narrow winding country lanes with blind bends. You should always take road conditions into your calculations and not just drive as fast as you are legally allowed to.

You wouldn't go at 60 around a blind bend. You could however easily and safely reach 60 on straighter sections. People who drive at 40 regardless are the problem.

I've done a lot of driving in lanes like this in West Wales in recent years and have seen little to suggest otherwise.

It’s unfair to punish all young drivers though, most would drive sensibly enough but there’s that minority who soup up their crappy little hatchbacks (polishing turds) and do donuts in car parks like they are Vin Diesel. It’s incredibly discriminatory to charge someone more simply because of their age. I’m surprised this is allowed to happen.

40 mph on narrow country lanes and B roafsis quite sensible. 60mph on decent single carriageway A Roads is a sensible speed.

A blanket 60 mph needs the driver to use their judgement to drive at an appropriate speed.

Yes, and if your judgement tells you that 40mph is quick enough on roads where 60mph has been deemed as acceptable in parts then you are an unsafe driver and hazard to other road users.

In som narrow lanes 40 is suicidal . Gower has plenty of them.

Not long ago,we did a trip to the Llyn which has miles of narrow roads with blind bends. I don’t think I did more that 25 mph as the stopping distance is still significant should a farm animal suddenly appear from a hedgerow .
In my experience ,lack of concentration is biggest killer and that means having row with wifey is pretty much as lethal as a loaded shotgun . Your mind is elsewhere.
I used to drive with shedfulls of music accompanying us but now Injust drive basically in silence as the roads and the hazards thereon are ever more worthy of 110 % concentration. That in itself is tiring .

When travelling to Swansea on that 483 ,I was always pretty much shattered as it is a road full of zpotential hazards and the most dangerous of all times to drive is when you are “almost there”
