| Same old England 13:31 - Nov 20 with 13006 views | trampie | How have England got such an easy draw on paper yet again in this World Cup ? Before looking at the draw I thought they won't get past both Brazil and Argentina but it looks likely that Brazil and Argentina are going to be in a different half of the draw and destined to play each other in the semis, so any potential winner from the other half won't have to play the both of them (unless one of Brazil/Argentina don't win their group and perhaps they would be not that good anyway in that scenario). Brazil might be deemed to be better overhaul than Argentina but possibly not head to head versus Argentina (didn't Argentina beat Brazil in the last Copa America ) so if Argentina get past Brazil in the semis then there is as much chance of an Argentina v England as there is of any other possible finals. Iran, USA and Wales in the group for one of the 'big teams' in the form of England means they couldn't ask for better draw than that, then the possible easiest last 16 tie for them (possibly Senegal from Africa) then a potential Quarter final against France, France seem to be on the way down they lost 2-0 to Denmark last time out, they have injuries to their top players like Benzema and Pogba then England would have on paper a possible semi final against ageing Belgium. England couldn't hand pick a better draw if they tried. | |

I was banned for saying “no wonder they rip into you on the other site”, and then again for saying a certain view was “moronic” but didn’t direct it at anyone in particular. I’d love for someone to explain the difference between those and the one pasted above. From where I stand, the pasted comment is infinitely worse. Happy to hear the explanation as to why it isn’t.

It’s certainly fascinating to me the levels of abuse some freely can get away with.

| Same old England on 20:23 - Dec 4 by Dr_Parnassus | Why is it a moot point? What was being said was, England have had a favourable draw and have the easiest group. My response was to show it was among the toughest of all possibilities… that was not me claiming it was a tough group. I reiterated that several times. England were essentially a certainty to qualify from any group, they have qualified from every World Cup group bar one since I have been in this earth - but our group provided the greatest challenge for them… but that challenge was still not a big one. I think you maybe decided to apply your own meaning to the point I was making. I did make that clear when you initially changed it from Englands perspective to Wales’. |
Right. So now it’s the toughest group, but still an easy group. This is where perspective is needed. For context, when the draw was made, Mail a online described it as a ‘Dream’ and ‘perfect’. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sp Sporting News - ‘the reaction in the English press was largely that Gareth Southgate’s team will have a rather easy passage through to the knockout stages’ https://www.sportingnews.com/u The Guardian called it ‘favourable’ https://amp.theguardian.com/fo

Not obviously no,not in the same way as someone like me being described by one be@t as as vile,or a disgrace to Wales. I have no trouble at all havin* dialogue with Dr P. I don’t agree with him on much. He posts ,I post then that’s it done. I don’t want to know who he is,where he lives or what usernames he has had. Why do people turn on him in concert. It s so obvious

The problem sometimes on this forum, despite Keith and I asking many times for folk not to do it is that people on both sides of the argument purposely wind each other up, insulting each other and then complain when others, despite being asked to put them on ignore, argue back. The whole thing really makes it boring for the majority of other users and takes over threads which end up having nothing to do with the original post.

As it happens, I don’t either. I just think it’s a bit childish. Was interested in your views as you often call out abuse, hate etc. It’s more subtle than calling someone vile, could still upset the easily offended though.

To be fair, I get this conversation may be a boring read and apologise for my part in that. I don’t think there’s been any real winding up though, certainly not insulting. Wouldn’t have mentioned the post above had OHL not joined in talking about abuse in the thread.

The toughest group of the 8 yes, where have I said anything different? Doesn’t mean it’s particularly tough though, does it? They are one of the best sides in the world. What journalists call the group has no relevance to me, or reality. For balance, here is an article calling it the “group of death”:- Here is Al Jazeera ranking it 1 of 8 in terms of group difficulty, calling it “the toughest group of all” and also “the tightest and most competitive”. Plenty more if you require them - but again, being the toughest group of them all, still doesn’t mean it’s particularly tough. England shouldn’t have an issue navigating any of the 8 groups. Would you then? How is that even conceivably seen as abuse? It was a statement of fact. Someone clearly was confused by it, were they not? They couldn’t work out how you can be the tallest among a small group, yet still not be tall. If it’s seen as abuse to note a simple and undeniable fact then we have issues.

No, as I’ve said above. Childish and patronising yes, but no more than that.
